Do Not Disturb is a Focus mode that can silence interruptions or delay notifications, while each app’s settings separately control whether alerts appear as banners. To restore a pop-up, check the affected app’s banner setting first, then inspect Focus and notification delivery timing.
Why notifications go to Notification Center instead of appearing as banners
Three separate controls can affect what you see: where an app displays an alert, whether Focus allows an interruption, and when a notification is delivered. A notification in Notification Center is not necessarily lost; it may have been silenced or delayed rather than shown as a banner. Apple explains that app notification settings separately control alerts on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, and as banners in its iPhone notification settings guide.
Do Not Disturb is one of iPhone’s Focus modes. Focus is intended to reduce interruptions, and its settings can silence or delay notifications. Separately, an app may be configured to show alerts in Notification Center without displaying banners.
Restore banners for the affected app
- Open Settings > Notifications > [app]. Confirm Allow Notifications is on.
- Under Alerts, select Banners. Lock Screen, Notification Center, and banners are separate alert locations, so choose the locations you want rather than assuming one enables the others.
- Test the app while you are using the iPhone. If notifications still do not appear as expected, check Focus and delivery timing next.
Check Do Not Disturb and other Focus modes
Go to Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb. Review which people and apps are allowed or silenced. If another Focus mode is active, inspect its settings too; a different Focus can also affect calls, alerts, and notifications. Apple’s Do Not Disturb and Focus guidance describes how to review the mode and its activation options.

Look for automatic activation
In Do Not Disturb settings, check Set a Schedule for times when the mode turns on automatically. On supported iOS and iPadOS releases, selecting a Lock Screen associated with Do Not Disturb can also activate the mode. If banners work for a while and then stop, an automatic activation is worth checking.
Check whether delivery is delayed
Open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary and see whether the app is included and when its summary is set to arrive. For an individual app, its notification settings may also distinguish Immediate Delivery from Scheduled Summary. Scheduled Summary changes delivery timing; it is separate from the app’s choice of banner, Lock Screen, or Notification Center alerts.
Consider quiet or provisional notification permission
Some apps may have provisional notification permission. Apple’s developer documentation says these notifications are delivered quietly, without sound or a banner, and appear in Notification Center history: Requesting authorization to use notifications. The available Apple guidance does not establish one universal way to convert this permission on every iOS version, so check the current notification options on your device rather than following a version-independent permission path.
Why the behavior may vary by iPhone or iOS version
Apple’s notification guide is the iOS 27 edition, and its Do Not Disturb support article was published June 29, 2026. Menu names and feature availability can vary by iOS version, device, and region. Apple also describes Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing for selected compatible devices and software versions; it may allow notifications judged important to interrupt, but it is not needed to understand the basic difference between an alert location and Focus behavior.
