Google ads can appear to reflect your location or interests because Google may use general-area signals, activity saved to your Google Account, and your choices in My Ad Center to personalize ads. That does not necessarily mean you shared precise GPS location or that an inferred interest is correct. You can review and change ad-personalization controls in My Ad Center, but turning them off does not remove all ads or guarantee that every related ad disappears.

Why Google ads can reflect your location

Google says ads on the Display Network may use a general location estimated from your device’s IP address or other signals. Possible signals include a website or app’s metadata—such as its domain, page content, browser type, time zone, and language—and your past browsing or app activity. These are possible inputs, not a way to identify which signal caused a particular ad. Google Ads Help: About location targeting

A location-related ad does not by itself show that Google used precise GPS data. Google also says searches and activity can help estimate the general areas where you use Google. For example, searching for coffee while the relevant setting is on may contribute to seeing an ad for a nearby coffee shop. Google says these areas may remain saved even after you turn off their use for ad personalization, and may still be used for personalized recommendations. Google My Ad Center Help: Manage your privacy settings

Location used for store-visit measurement

Google says information from people who opted into Location History may be used to estimate campaign-related visits to advertisers’ physical stores. Google describes the resulting reports as aggregate statistics and says it does not share Location History or other identifying information with advertisers. This is Google’s own description of its measurement practices. Google Ads Help: About store visits

Why Google ads can reflect your interests

Activity saved to a Google Account may help personalize ads. Google’s examples include seeing an ad for cake-baking supplies after searching for chocolate cake, or having searches for diapers contribute to an inferred category such as “Parents of toddlers.” These are examples of how a category might be inferred; they do not establish that Google knows a person’s actual status or that the inference is accurate. My Ad Center provides controls for categories used to show ads, activity used for ad personalization, and areas where you have used Google. Depending on the setting, activity controls include activity on sites and apps and YouTube History for ads. Turning off activity for ads does not necessarily turn off personalized recommendations in Search or other Google services. What ad-personalization controls change

Control What it affects What it does not promise
Show fewer ads about a topic or brand Influences selection for that topic or brand. It does not block the topic or reduce the total number of ads. Google says relevant ads may still appear—for example, an earrings ad after you search for earrings. Google My Ad Center Help: Customize your ads
Turn off a specific activity setting Stops that activity from being used for ad personalization according to the setting. It does not necessarily delete the saved activity or stop its use for recommendations in other Google services. Google My Ad Center Help: Manage your privacy settings
Turn off personalized ads Google says it will not use information and activity saved to your Google Account or your My Ad Center choices to personalize ads. It does not remove ads. General or contextual factors may still be used. Google My Ad Center Help: Manage your privacy settings Google Ad Manager Help: Non-personalized ads

Google says ads can still be based on general factors such as the time of day or the topic of a video, website, or app. Google Ad Manager’s publisher guidance describes non-personalized ads as contextual and says coarse current location, current content, and query terms may be used. That publisher guidance should not be read as a guarantee about every Google service, ad placement, or setting. Google My Ad Center Help: Manage your privacy settings Google Ad Manager Help: Non-personalized ads

Google states that it does not use sensitive information such as health, race, religion, or sexual orientation to personalize ads. That is Google’s policy statement, not an independent audit of how the policy is implemented. Google My Ad Center Help: Manage your privacy settings

How to check or change why an ad is shown

  1. Open the ad’s More menu. On an ad in a Google service, select the More menu if it is available. My Ad Center may show information used to display the ad, details about the advertiser, options to block or report it, or ad preferences. Google My Ad Center Help: How Google uses your data
  2. Open My Ad Center’s privacy controls. Select Manage Privacy, then review Categories used to show you ads, Activity used to personalize ads, and Areas where you’ve used Google. The options available can depend on the setting and service. Google My Ad Center Help: Manage your privacy settings
  3. Change the control that matches your concern. Turn off a specific activity or area setting to limit that input, or turn off personalized ads if you do not want Google to use account activity and My Ad Center choices for ad personalization. These are ad-personalization controls, not a general command to erase saved account activity.
  4. Use the ad-level options when appropriate. If you believe a particular ad is inappropriate or misleading, use the available block or report option rather than treating “show fewer” as a universal blocklist. Google My Ad Center Help: How Google uses your data

Why a location-specific or related ad may still appear

Even after changing preferences, a related ad may remain relevant because of the page, video, app, search query, time, or a general location estimate. “Show fewer” preferences influence ad selection but do not block every ad about a subject. Google lists IP address and browsing or app metadata among possible general-area signals, so a VPN or proxy is not established by these sources as a guaranteed way to change all location signals or interest categories. Google Ads Help: About location targeting Google Ad Manager Help: Non-personalized ads Google My Ad Center Help: Customize your ads

Google’s help pages describe how its systems and controls are intended to work; they do not establish the precise cause of a particular ad impression or independently verify implementation. Use the ad’s own More menu and My Ad Center controls to see what information and options Google makes available for that ad.
