Windows may use extra space while downloading and applying an update, storing temporary files, or keeping the previous Windows installation so you can roll back. To find what is using space, check Settings > System > Storage before deleting anything. The category breakdown can guide cleanup, but by itself it cannot prove exactly which update component caused a change.
Why an update can use more storage
Windows updates can require room for downloaded files, temporary working files, applicable optional content, and—in the case of an upgrade—the files needed to return to the previous Windows version. Microsoft describes temporary space for removing an update as typically needed for 10 days. Storage settings may show usage under categories such as Temporary files and System & reserved, but those categories do not identify a single update as the cause.
The amount varies by device and update path. Without a measurement from before the update, the current storage view can show where space is being used now, but not precisely when or why it grew.
Find what is using space
- Check the Windows drive: Open File Explorer, select This PC, and note the free space on the drive where Windows is installed, usually C:.
- Open the category breakdown: Go to Settings > System > Storage. Review the listed categories, including Temporary files and System & reserved.
- Inspect cleanup choices: Open Cleanup recommendations or Temporary files, review the items and estimated savings, and select only items you understand and are willing to remove.
If you have a screenshot or record from before the update, compare it with the current figures. Windows’ estimates are specific to the device; they are not a guaranteed amount you will reclaim.

Choose a safe cleanup action
Review Temporary files and Cleanup recommendations
Windows can identify temporary files, large or unused files, unused apps, and cloud-synced content in its cleanup views. Read the descriptions and selected checkboxes carefully before confirming. In particular, do not select Downloads unless you intend to remove files from that folder.
Decide whether you need the rollback option
After an upgrade, Windows may list Previous Windows Installation(s) among removable system files. These files, commonly associated with Windows.old, let you return to the prior Windows version. Removing them ends that rollback option. If the new version is working and you do not expect to go back, deleting the previous installation is one way to reclaim its space; the amount depends on the installation. Microsoft says Windows automatically removes the previous installation 10 days after an upgrade.

Configure Storage Sense to match your preferences
Storage Sense can automatically remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents, but its behavior depends on your settings and it operates on the system drive. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you configure those options. Check Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense before enabling or changing automatic cleanup.
For OneDrive files, Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance says the default in Windows 11 version 22H2 is to make eligible cloud files online-only if they have not been opened for more than 30 days. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from online-only management. This applies to that setting and version; it is not a promise that every Windows installation will free space automatically.

Organize personal files or apps
If the category view points to large personal files or unused apps, consider moving files to another drive or uninstalling apps you no longer use. If cloud storage is already part of your workflow, Files On-Demand can keep eligible inactive files online-only rather than storing their contents locally. These are optional ways to manage local storage, not evidence that those files caused the post-update increase.

Needing space to complete an update is different from reclaiming space after one has finished. For the documented feature-update workaround, Microsoft says to connect an external storage device with at least 10 GB free and an internet connection, then follow the prompts. Back up important files on the device before using it. The update’s space requirement depends on the update path and any applicable optional content; not everyone needs external storage.

What to avoid
- Do not manually delete Windows system folders to try to reclaim update space. Use Windows’ storage categories and cleanup controls, and review what they will remove.
- Do not assume a displayed category proves which update file caused the increase.
- Do not treat cleanup estimates as guaranteed savings; actual space reclaimed varies by device.
