What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A blank snapshot after a terminal session disconnects can mean different things: the remote session ended, the viewer lost access to its display, or the snapshot was taken from a different display than the one running the desktop. The cause depends on your operating system, connection type and capture point. First determine what disconnected and where the snapshot was taken; then follow the matching Windows or Linux checks below.
First identify what disconnected and what the snapshot captures
“Terminal session” can describe several different things. Closing an RDP client is not the same as logging off Windows; closing an SSH shell is not necessarily the same as ending a graphical Linux desktop; and disconnecting a remote-support viewer does not always stop the host session.
Write down these details before changing settings:
- Host and session: Windows or Linux, and whether you use RDP, a remote-support application, SSH-forwarded graphics, a virtual desktop, or the local console.
- Capture point: inside the remote session, from the host console, from a physical monitor, or from a separate virtual display.
- What “blank” means: an empty desktop background, a black or missing display, or a particular application that has disappeared.
- What ended: the viewer connection, a terminal emulator, a shell, the user session, or the host itself.
This distinction matters because a snapshot can faithfully capture an inactive or inaccessible display path even while processes remain alive elsewhere.
Windows: disconnecting is different from logging off
Check whether the session still exists
In Windows Terminal Server, disconnecting can leave the user’s processes and virtual memory in the session so the same user can reconnect. Logging off ends the session and terminates its processes. Microsoft describes this distinction in its Terminal Server documentation.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
So, if the snapshot is blank after an RDP disconnect, do not assume the applications have closed. Reconnect to the same account and verify whether you have resumed the existing session. Also confirm whether the snapshot tool is capturing that remote session or the host’s local console: Windows can have separate remote and console terminal/display paths, and a capture from the wrong path may not show the desktop you expect. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services documentation.
Check the specific RemoteApp blank-background case
Microsoft documents a narrower case in which a RemoteApp session may not terminate promptly after its launched program exits because a spawned process remains. Its example involves printing and splwow64.exe, which has a three-minute timeout in that scenario. This can leave a blank background; it is not evidence that every blank snapshot after a disconnect has the same cause. Details are in Microsoft’s RemoteApp troubleshooting guidance.

If your symptom matches that sequence, check whether the launched program has exited while a related child process remains. Do not apply a registry workaround simply because the screen is blank: first confirm that the specific RemoteApp and printing scenario applies, and assess the system impact of any change.
Linux: check display-server support and monitor availability
Verify the active display session
Linux remote-support behavior depends on the application, display server and desktop configuration. Check whether the remote-support product supports the active Wayland or X11 session, and follow its documentation for your distribution and display manager. Zoho’s guide provides product-specific checks and notes that configuration steps vary; it is not a universal instruction to disable Wayland. See Zoho Assist’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide and its Linux unattended-access guidance.

Confirm that the host has a usable display mode
On a headless host, check whether Linux enumerates a usable monitor and resolution. A remote viewer or screenshot process may have no active display mode to capture. Diagnose the display configuration first; if no usable display exists, a physical display or a configured virtual display may be needed. An HDMI display emulator is only a possible option after confirming that missing display mode is the problem; the cited guidance does not guarantee compatibility with any particular emulator.
Choose the session model that matches the job
| What you need | What to check or use | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Reconnect to the same Windows user session | Disconnect rather than log off, then reconnect to that account. | Windows can preserve processes on disconnect; logging off terminates them. |
| A separate Linux desktop that survives viewer disconnect | Xpra desktop mode documents a persistent session that can be reattached. | The desktop is separate from the physical display. |
| Share an already-running Linux physical desktop | Xpra’s shadow mode is for an existing desktop. | This is distinct from creating a separate persistent desktop session. |
| Fix a NoMachine session that ends around physical-screen blanking | Check whether the observed setup matches NoMachine’s documented X-server and virtual-terminal case. | Its workaround is specific to that failure mode, not a general blank-snapshot fix. |
Xpra’s documentation explains the distinction between shadowing an existing desktop and starting a separate desktop session. Use a persistent session when the goal is to reconnect to that same Linux desktop after the viewer drops, rather than to mirror the physical screen.

NoMachine documents a narrower failure involving physical-screen blanking and X-server termination around virtual-terminal switching. If that matches your setup, its page describes disabling “Blank the physical screen when somebody connects” as a workaround. Do not apply it to unrelated cases: NoMachine’s article on the setting.
A practical diagnostic sequence
- Record the host OS and connection type. Distinguish RDP, Linux remote support, an SSH-forwarded application, a virtual desktop and the local console.
- Pinpoint the capture source. Determine whether the snapshot comes from the remote session, host console, physical monitor or a virtual display.
- Test whether the session is alive. Reconnect to the same session if supported; check whether applications and processes remain running rather than treating the blank image as proof the session ended.
- On Linux, inspect display support and enumeration. Verify the active Wayland/X11 session, product support, monitor detection and available resolution. Follow the remote-support vendor’s instructions for your distribution.
- Match any product-specific workaround to its exact symptom. The RemoteApp printing case and NoMachine virtual-terminal case are narrow documented failure modes, not general fixes.
- If persistence is the requirement, select a persistent-session design. Confirm whether it creates a separate desktop or shares the physical display, and test reconnection behavior on your host.
Or skip the browser setup
If by “desktop snapshot” you mean a screenshot of a web page, you can capture it with one API request instead of managing a browser. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from ScreenshotNeo; its response includes page-verdict and billing headers. This does not capture a Windows or Linux desktop session and will not fix a disconnected remote display.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a blank snapshot prove that my remote session ended?
No. On Windows, a disconnected session can remain alive with its processes; the capture may also be reading a different display path.
Should I disable Wayland to fix a Linux blank screen?
Not as a general fix. Confirm the active display server and follow the remote-support product’s instructions for your distribution and display manager.
Will ScreenshotNeo capture my remote desktop?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures web pages; it is not a remote desktop or host-display capture tool.
