Cloudinary screenshots can miss images when the page defers loading them until they approach the visible area, but the capture process has not scrolled far enough to trigger those requests—or has not waited for them to finish. Scroll through the needed page area, allow images to load and render, then capture. There is no universal wait time that works for every site or screenshot tool.
Why lazy-loaded images are missing from a screenshot
Cloudinary describes lazy loading as a way to delay downloading images until they are visible on the screen or the visitor scrolls near them. Its JavaScript transformation documentation includes a lazyload() plugin with configurable rootMargin and threshold options. In the documented example, a threshold of 0.25 means loading begins when 25% of an image is visible; those settings are examples, not defaults for every Cloudinary integration. A screenshot process that captures a full page without first bringing below-the-fold content into view may therefore capture blank areas, placeholders, or stale content. This explanation follows from Cloudinary’s documented loading behavior and user reports of missing images; it does not establish that all screenshot tools behave alike. A reader discussion about missing images in full-page captures describes scrolling as a way to trigger loading, but it is anecdotal rather than a guarantee.
How to capture the images reliably
- Use the intended viewport. Set the viewport to the size relevant to the screenshot. Lazy-load thresholds and responsive image choices can depend on what is visible and the available layout.
- Let the initial page settle. Allow scripts and layout to run before scrolling, so you are triggering images in the page as it is actually rendered.
- Scroll through the area to capture. Move down the page in increments so each relevant section enters or approaches the viewport. On infinite-scroll pages, note that scrolling may append new content as well as trigger images in sections already present.
- Wait for the final images after each scroll. A visibility trigger may start a request; it does not mean the image has already downloaded and rendered. Avoid relying on an arbitrary fixed delay unless you have measured it for the site and capture setup.
- Capture after the required area has rendered. If images remain missing, check whether the page contains the image element, whether its image URL has been assigned, whether the request failed, and whether the capture tool changed viewport or script behavior.
These steps are a practical workflow, not a tool-independent guarantee. Cloudinary’s documentation and the user discussion do not establish a single wait duration that ensures every image is ready.

Lazy loading and placeholders
Cloudinary’s JavaScript transformation documentation shows that lazy loading can be combined with a placeholder. Its documented plugin order is lazyload(), responsive(), accessibility(), then placeholder(); plugins can be omitted when they are not needed. A placeholder can make the page look less empty while the full asset downloads, but it is not evidence that the final image has loaded. Reserve image dimensions
Cloudinary recommends setting image width and height attributes to reduce layout shifts while images load. WordPress plugin scope
For its WordPress plugin specifically, Cloudinary says lazy loading is enabled by default as part of setup, and that users can configure the behavior and placeholder. The plugin documentation also says lazy-loading transformations count against usage and that the WordPress plugin does not support lazy loading for videos. Keep screenshot behavior separate from search crawling
Google’s advice addresses whether its crawler can discover lazy-loaded content, not whether a screenshot is complete. Google says content should load when it becomes visible and notes that its crawler does not interact with pages by scrolling or clicking. It lists browser-native lazy loading, IntersectionObserver, and compatible JavaScript as approaches that do not depend on user actions. Performance and image-loading tradeoffs
When adjusting an implementation, consider when the request starts, what the visitor sees while it loads, whether the layout reserves space, whether the most important above-the-fold image is prioritized, and whether the selected asset fits the viewport and device. A faster-looking placeholder and a complete screenshot are different goals: the capture may need to wait for the final asset even if the page can show a lightweight interim image.
Cloudinary’s LQIP article says, “Never lazy load the LCP image (Largest Contentful Paint),” and recommends measuring the effect of a low-quality image placeholder implementation on LCP. Cloudinary’s responsive-image guidance compares approaches: JavaScript-based responsive techniques can delay image-load start, while server-side client-hints delivery can avoid that delay in supported Chromium-based browsers; a sizes attribute is still required. Choose according to your integration, browser support, and layout needs. Responsive delivery does not by itself fix a screenshot that never triggers lazy loading. Cloudinary also recommends serving images at or near their final display size rather than downloading full-size files and shrinking them in the browser. Its note that a delivery URL using f_auto may not show the expected format when opened directly—because the browser may not advertise image support in its Accept header—describes URL preview behavior, not the cause of images missing from a screenshot. Troubleshoot images that remain blank
- The image stays a placeholder: Check whether the final image URL was assigned and whether the request completed. A placeholder alone does not show that the full asset loaded.
- Only lower sections are affected: Scroll through the missing area before capture; those images may not have crossed their visibility threshold.
- Images appear after manual scrolling but not in automation: Check whether the automation actually scrolls the rendered page, and whether it waits after scrolling for both requests and rendering.
- Images shift the layout as they appear: Add image width and height attributes as Cloudinary recommends, then retest the capture after assets render.
- The page keeps growing while you scroll: On an infinite-scroll page, distinguish new sections appended by scrolling from images in sections that were already present. Decide which content belongs in the capture, then trigger and wait for that content.
- A direct delivery URL looks different: Check whether the issue is the URL preview and its
Acceptheader, rather than whether the page requested the image during capture.
