Chrome may ask for a fingerprint, face, or other device authentication before filling a saved password because Google Password Manager can require an identity check. Google says this password-specific biometric option is off by default, but a separate Chrome setting can require verification when autofilling sensitive information more broadly.

Why is Chrome asking me to verify before filling a password?

The prompt is Chrome’s check that you’re authorized to access a saved password. Google says confirmation is intended to help protect saved passwords from unauthorized access. It is a Chrome and device security step; the Google help pages cited here do not indicate that the website itself requested a fingerprint or face scan.

Chrome may use a biometric method supported by your computer, or the device’s screen lock. Google notes that password-data protection can involve on-device encryption and that details depend on the operating system. Google’s explanation of how Chrome protects autofill and password data provides more detail.

Which Chrome setting controls the prompt?

There are two related controls. One applies specifically to password autofill; the other covers sensitive saved information more generally. Their scope and defaults differ.

Password confirmation Filling saved passwords Windows PC: “Use Windows Hello when filling passwords”; Mac: “Use your screen lock when filling passwords” Biometric authentication is off by default, according to Google.
Sensitive-info re-authentication Autofilling sensitive saved information more broadly “Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info” Additional re-authentication is on by default, according to Google.

Google documents the password option in Manage passwords in Chrome and the broader control in Fill out forms automatically in Chrome.

How do I check or stop Chrome’s verification prompt?

Check the password-specific option

  1. Open Chrome and go to Passwords and autofill → Google Password Manager → Settings.
  2. On a Windows PC, inspect Use Windows Hello when filling passwords. On a Mac, inspect Use your screen lock when filling passwords.
  3. If you do not want this password-specific confirmation, turn off the relevant option if it is enabled.

Check the broader sensitive-information option

  1. Open Chrome Settings → Autofill and passwords → Autofill settings.
  2. Find Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info.
  3. Google says turning this control off prevents screen-lock or biometric verification prompts when you attempt to autofill sensitive information.

Chrome’s labels and menu paths can change between releases, so look for the named settings if your version organizes them differently. Google’s referenced help pages were current as retrieved on October 3, 2026; publication or revision dates were not shown in the search results.

What if Chrome cannot use biometrics?

Biometrics are not the only authentication route. Google says that when a device does not support biometrics, Chrome uses its default screen lock instead—for example, a password or passcode.
