Chinese DRAM has not yet delivered a clear bargain in every market: in one July 2026 China-market comparison, a CXMT-based 64GB DDR5-5600 server module was listed slightly above comparable Samsung- or SK hynix-based modules. But that single retail example does not prove Chinese memory generally costs as much as the established suppliers. A separate estimate put CXMT’s DRAM selling prices below theirs, illustrating why chip prices and finished-module prices must be kept distinct.

What the July 2026 price comparison actually showed

Tom’s Hardware reported observations of JD.com listings by @harukaze5719: a 64GB DDR5-5600 registered DIMM (RDIMM) built with CXMT memory was listed for 18,999 CNY. Comparable 64GB DDR5-5600 RDIMMs using Samsung or SK hynix memory were listed for 18,595 CNY. The report described the CXMT module as about 2.2% more expensive. Tom’s Hardware’s July 26, 2026 report documents a particular China-market listing comparison, not a current quote or a market-wide price survey.

These were server RDIMMs, not ordinary desktop UDIMMs. The observation says nothing conclusive about all capacities, DDR generations, configurations, sellers, or regions. It also does not establish current U.S. prices or availability. A buyer comparing products should match the memory type, capacity, generation, rated speed, configuration, seller, location, and date before drawing a price conclusion.

Why a lower chip selling price can coexist with a higher module listing

ChosunBiz reported SemiAnalysis estimates that CXMT’s average DRAM selling price in Q1 2026 was about 5%–10% below Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron. That is an estimated manufacturer-level average selling price (ASP), not the price of a finished RAM module on a retailer’s site. The reported article said CXMT’s actual customer-specific chip quotes were not publicly known. ChosunBiz’s July 6, 2026 report attributes the ASP estimate to SemiAnalysis.

  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

A retail module price also reflects the company that assembles the module, distribution, inventory, the market where it is sold, and the conditions of a particular listing. A discount in the DRAM chip’s estimated average selling price therefore does not guarantee that a module containing it will be cheaper at retail. Conversely, one expensive module listing cannot show that CXMT charges more for its chips overall.

Why more Chinese supply has not automatically ended the shortage

The expectation was that a new Chinese supplier might expand DRAM supply enough to force prices down. The reported picture is more constrained: AI infrastructure is absorbing memory and production attention. TrendForce’s September 2026 analysis says AI servers are driving demand for both high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and conventional DRAM, while suppliers prioritize server applications. It also reports that rising costs are leading some PC and smartphone buyers to consider lower-capacity modules. TrendForce’s September 4, 2026 analysis describes those pressures and notes that CXMT’s server revenue surpassed its mobile revenue for the first time.

When supply is tight, a new supplier can add capacity and give buyers another potential source without immediately creating a price war. ChosunBiz, citing SemiAnalysis, reported an estimate that CXMT’s per-bit cost of manufacturing DDR5 is more than 30% above that of market leaders. That cost estimate is not an audited company disclosure, but if accurate, it would limit how deeply CXMT could discount while remaining commercially viable.

CXMT is an important supplier, but not interchangeable with the leaders in every segment

ChosunBiz put CXMT at around 8% of DRAM market share in its July 2026 report, an estimate tied to that source and date. It said CXMT’s revenue mainly came from commodity DDR and LPDDR, with limited HBM output. TrendForce’s later report that server revenue had overtaken mobile revenue points to a changing product mix, but it does not establish that CXMT has matched the incumbents across every memory category or supply need.

Patriot Viper Venom DDR5 RAM 16GB (2X8GB) 6000MT/s CL36 Desktop Memory
  • Capacity: 16GB(2 x 8GB)
  • Tested Frequency Profile 1: PC5-48000 (6000MT/s)
  • Tested Timings: 36-46-46-110
  • Feature Overclock: XMP 3.0 & EXPO overclocking supported
  • On-Die ECC

That distinction matters because “DRAM” covers products serving different markets. Commodity memory, mobile memory, server modules, and HBM are not interchangeable products. A supplier’s growing share in some categories does not by itself mean it can immediately replace the leading producers in others or relieve every shortage affecting buyers.

Rising prices were forecast, but forecasts are not final results

In January 2026, S&P Global Market Intelligence reported Visible Alpha consensus forecasts for 2026 conventional DRAM revenue per bit: year-over-year increases of 116% for Samsung, 78% for SK hynix, and 54% for Micron. These were forecasts published at the time, not realized full-year outcomes. The article described producers prioritizing HBM, whose stronger economics were tightening conventional DRAM supply. S&P Global Market Intelligence’s January 2026 article attributes the projections to Visible Alpha consensus estimates.

There is no firm timetable for a return to balanced supply. On Micron’s FY 2026 earnings call, CEO and chair Sanjay Mehrotra said, “We do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance.” Tom’s Hardware reported that Micron expected demand to exceed supply in 2027 and 2028; that is the company’s outlook, not a guaranteed industry outcome. Tom’s Hardware reported the remarks on October 1, 2026.

How to judge whether Chinese RAM is a bargain

  • Compare the same kind of product: RDIMM with RDIMM, or desktop UDIMM with desktop UDIMM.
  • Match capacity, DDR generation, rated speed, and module configuration.
  • Check that the listings are from the same region and are comparable in seller, stock status, and date.
  • Distinguish the DRAM maker’s estimated chip ASP from the price of a completed module.
  • Treat the July 2026 JD.com example as evidence about those listings only—not a current price guide or a verdict on every CXMT-based product.
