Start by searching for a distinctive phrase or participant, then check hidden chats, meeting details, and your access to the conversation.
Search for the message first
Use the search field at the top of Teams and enter a participant’s name or a distinctive phrase from the message. Choose Messages in the results, then open a match. You can narrow results by chat or channel, team or channel name, sender, date, mentions, or attachments. Microsoft’s message search guide explains these filters.
If you already know which chat or channel contains the message, open it and use Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on macOS to search within that conversation.
Check whether a one-to-one chat is hidden or removed
Unhide a chat
A hidden one-to-one chat can still be found through search. Search for the person’s name, open More options beside the chat result, and select Unhide. If the chat does not appear in your list, search again and choose Show hidden chat history. Microsoft notes that “the chat and its history are hidden until someone posts a new message to it.” See Microsoft’s instructions for hiding and unhiding chats.

Understand what removing history does
Hiding is different from removing a one-to-one chat’s history. Removing history takes it out of your list and search, and Microsoft says you cannot access it again through search; the other participant can still see it. Leaving a group or meeting chat removes it from your list and prevents you from sending messages, but the history remains. These actions have different effects, so check Microsoft’s chat history and leaving-chat guidance before assuming a missing conversation was merely hidden.
Why a meeting chat may be missing
Meeting-chat access depends on the meeting type, how you were invited or joined, and whether you belong to the organizer’s organization. Attending a meeting does not necessarily mean you can see its earlier chat history: anonymous attendees do not get prior history, and people who received a forwarded invitation or joined through a link may not see messages sent before they joined. Microsoft describes these cases in its meeting-chat access guidance.

Find a declined meeting
Search for the meeting title. If you declined the invitation, you can also enable Show declined events in your calendar to locate the event and its chat, where available.
Check the meeting’s chat settings
Organizers can limit meeting chat or turn it off in meeting options. If the meeting is visible but chat is unavailable, ask the organizer whether chat was restricted. Microsoft’s meeting chat overview covers meeting-chat behavior.

Check team or channel membership
If a team or channel is missing from search, confirm that you have access to it. A private team may not appear in search when its owner has disabled discoverability, and joining a private team requires owner approval. Contact the team owner to request access. For a chat or meeting request from someone outside your organization, whether you accepted, deleted, or blocked the request can affect the history and your ability to participate. Microsoft explains the options in its external request guidance.

Chats involving organization members and personal users may also be affected by organizational settings. Microsoft says the organization must enable these chats for them to be searchable; its Teams personal-use feature guidance describes this limitation. If the other checks do not explain the issue, ask your Teams administrator to review the relevant policy and access. Tenant configuration, account state, and retention settings are specific to your organization, so a general troubleshooting step cannot determine them.
