Call of Duty can take up more space on PlayStation than the game or mode you intend to play because its installed files may include a shared launcher, multiple games or modes, and content you no longer use. The exact total depends on the title, your install choices, platform and region; there is no single current size that applies to every PlayStation player. Start by checking Call of Duty’s in-game file manager and removing unused content before assuming you need a larger drive.
Why does Call of Duty take so much storage on PlayStation?
Because the storage figure can describe a collection of installed content, not just one game mode. A Call of Duty installation may include the shared Call of Duty HQ launcher, one or more games, campaign or multiplayer files, Warzone content, language data, or assets carried forward between releases. Which of those files are present depends on the game and the player’s installation choices.
This distinction matters when you see a large number in a console’s storage menu or an online discussion. A store listing, a download in progress and the space occupied after installation are not necessarily the same measurement. An update’s download size is not the size of the whole game, either. Activision says file sizes vary by platform and region, including because of localization files. Activision’s Call of Duty HQ explanation is a useful example of why the launcher and installed content can complicate the total.

What is Call of Duty HQ, and does it mean I have several games installed?
Call of Duty HQ is a shared entry point and file-management system Activision described for Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III and Warzone in 2023. It can make separate games or modes appear within one hub, but seeing a title in the hub does not by itself prove that all of its content is installed.

In that 2023 explanation, Activision said campaign and multiplayer could be separate files. It also described downloads associated with Carry Forward content, such as inventory, Operators, weapons and selected maps. These are examples of how an installation could include more than the mode a player currently opens—not a claim that every PlayStation installation today contains those older games or assets.
There is a practical consequence: removing a mode or game you do not play may free space without removing the hub or every other Call of Duty file. Conversely, leaving an older game installed alongside a newer one can add to the overall footprint. Activision said in 2024 that unused older content generally stays installed until the player removes it, and that retaining earlier games alongside Black Ops 6 increases total storage use.
Why did Warzone sometimes download other Call of Duty modes?
Some PlayStation installs have included unexpected content because of how a particular release was packaged or delivered. The clearest example in Activision’s guidance was the 2024 Black Ops 6 rollout, so treat it as a dated example rather than a rule for all current Call of Duty downloads.
For that rollout, Activision said PS5 Warzone players who had not purchased Black Ops 6 initially downloaded Black Ops 6 Multiplayer and Zombies as part of PS5 content delivery, and could uninstall those modes afterward. Activision also described some shared Black Ops 6 content for PS4 Warzone players. Its Black Ops 6 launch guidance explains that specific case.

The lesson is to inspect the installed files rather than infer what is taking space from the game’s name or the mode you play. Packaging can differ by title, platform and release. Activision’s 2020 Black Ops Cold War instructions, for example, said console players initially installed the complete base game and could then delete selected modes. Do not assume every first download is fully selective.
Are the big Call of Duty storage numbers online accurate?
They may describe a particular bundle, platform, region or moment—not the space every player needs for one game. A much-discussed 2024 Black Ops 6 preorder estimate, for example, was not a normal single-game download requirement: Activision said it included full installations of several titles and all localized languages. It should not be repeated as a current Call of Duty size.
Also distinguish these three numbers:
- Download size: how much data a download or update transfers. It does not necessarily equal the final space occupied after installation.
- Installed size: the storage occupied by the files currently installed on the console. It changes when you add or remove modes, games, language content or updates.
- Available space needed to install or update: the free space the console or game requires to complete an operation. That requirement is not proof that the finished game will occupy the same amount.
Activision published historical PS5 update figures of 18.0 GB for the Black Ops Cold War Season Two update and 17.0 GB for the Warzone Season Two update in 2021. Those figures describe those specific updates at that time—not the current installed size of either game, and not a current Call of Duty update estimate. Activision’s size note says platform and regional localization can affect file sizes.

First check the console’s actual free space, then use Call of Duty’s own file manager to review installed games and modes. Activision recommends its in-game manager for managing full games and modes because removing files through the console interface may handle individual files differently.

- Check free space on PS5. Open Settings > Storage and note the available space. This gives you a baseline for judging whether a removal made a difference.
- Open Call of Duty’s file manager. In Call of Duty, go to Menu > Manage Files > Manage Files. Review the installed tiles and identify full games or modes you do not play.
- Uninstall only what you can do without. If you do not play a particular campaign, multiplayer mode or other installed content, select that item for removal. Read the confirmation screen before proceeding so you do not remove a mode you still need.
- Check available space again. Return to Settings > Storage. The freed amount depends on the files removed; there is no universal saving for deleting a particular mode.
- Use PS5’s Customize option only when available. For a game that exposes it, Sony’s path is Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, then select the game and choose Customize. Sony says this can manage portions of a game’s data, but the option is not identical for every Call of Duty version.
If you later want a deleted mode, you may need to download it again. That takes bandwidth and time, so keep content installed if you expect to play it soon or have a limited connection. Check the game’s file manager after major updates as well: content you are not using may remain installed until you remove it.
Can texture streaming reduce storage use?
On-Demand High-Quality Streaming can keep some less-used content in a streaming cache rather than requiring every asset to be stored locally. It is a storage and network trade-off, not a way to make Call of Duty take no space, and Activision does not promise a fixed number of gigabytes saved.
Where the setting is available, Activision’s instructions give this path: Menu > Manage Files > Graphics. Choose Optimized for higher fidelity and greater bandwidth use, or Minimal for reduced fidelity and lower bandwidth use. Streaming depends on internet access, so consider your connection and data limits before changing the setting. Choose based on whether you need to launch PS5 games from the added storage or simply keep them installed. A compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD can provide storage from which PS5 games launch; USB extended storage can hold PS5 games for later transfer and can run PS4 games directly. These capacity and speed figures are Sony’s storage-device requirements, not estimates of how much Call of Duty occupies. Check the console maker’s current specifications and the drive’s dimensions before buying. For PS5 M.2 installation, Sony calls for effective cooling and lists a #1 Phillips screwdriver; a separate heatsink is needed only if the chosen SSD does not already have a correctly sized cooling mechanism. Adding storage gives you room; it does not shrink Call of Duty’s files. If you want to launch PS5 games without copying them back and forth, USB extended storage is the wrong choice for that purpose. If your immediate problem is an overgrown installation, remove unused content first and expand storage only if you still need more capacity.

Activision’s April 2026 Warzone installation guidance says Warzone is no longer available for new download on PS4. That current availability note does not erase the older PS4 packaging examples above; it means those examples should not be read as instructions for a new PS4 Warzone installation today.

Will deleting a Call of Duty mode erase my multiplayer progress or purchases?
Removing installed files is different from deleting an account or profile, but the effect on local data can depend on the game and what the confirmation screen says. Before confirming, read the in-game prompt carefully and make sure you are uninstalling a mode or content pack—not requesting account deletion or unlinking.
Why does PlayStation say I need more space than the update download size?
The download amount and the free space needed to complete an update are different figures. Installation may need room to process or replace files, so a download smaller than your available free space can still fail for lack of space.
Can I move Call of Duty between PS5 console storage and an M.2 SSD?
Yes, compatible PS5 games can be stored and launched from console storage or a correctly installed supported M.2 SSD. This differs from USB extended storage, which can store PS5 games but cannot launch them directly.
Does switching to Minimal streaming mean Call of Duty will use less internet?
Activision describes Minimal as using lower bandwidth than Optimized, with reduced visual fidelity. Actual network use can vary with play and connection conditions, and the setting does not guarantee a particular data amount.
