A browser redesign often changes where a control appears or how it looks without removing the underlying feature. Start by checking the browser and device you’re using, then search its built-in Settings or Preferences for the control’s name or purpose. If it’s a button or toolbar item, check the browser’s customization options and current support documentation. Exact paths depend on the browser, version, and platform.
Why browsers change familiar controls
Redesigns can make navigation simpler, group related settings, improve visual consistency, or make controls easier to see and use. That does not mean every change works better for every person: a vendor’s explanation of its design goals is not proof that all users prefer the new layout.
Mozilla says Firefox’s settings had become crowded, with related preferences spread across sections and some options difficult to locate. Its redesign uses revised navigation, updated labels and descriptions, and more specific categories. Mozilla says it informed the work with interviews, usability testing, card-sorting exercises, usage-data analysis, and community feedback. Microsoft frames Edge’s visual updates around usability, accessibility, visual consistency, and the browsing experience. It describes changes such as colors, fonts, spacing, readability, simplified toolbars, and placement of common actions. Those are Microsoft’s stated aims, not an independent ranking of the redesign. Microsoft’s Edge Appearance guidance explains the current settings category and notes that options can vary.

Mozilla’s 2021 Firefox refresh offers an earlier example: the company described streamlining the toolbar around common navigation, simplifying menus, clarifying labels, and reducing visual clutter. Mozilla attributed its design framing to the Firefox design team: “When it came time to redesign the Firefox browser, we sought to create unity across the visual language of the browser while setting a foundation for some really interesting things to come.” Mozilla’s 2021 design post gives that context.
How to find a control after a redesign
- Identify the browser and device. Check whether you are using Firefox, Edge, or another browser, and whether it is the desktop or mobile version. Desktop instructions may not apply to a mobile app.
- Search the browser’s own settings. Open Settings or Preferences and search for the control’s name, or for what it does. For example, if you are looking for a toolbar button, search “toolbar” or the button’s name. Mozilla specifically recommends Firefox’s settings search for preferences whose locations have changed.
- Check likely categories. Look under Appearance, Accessibility, Tabs, Privacy, or Toolbar, depending on what the option controls. In Firefox, settings that were previously together may now be in more specific groups.
- For a missing button, check customization and support. A control may be optional, hidden, or managed through a toolbar page rather than a general preference. Mozilla’s Firefox customization and settings index links to separate help topics for toolbar buttons and controls, restoring the Menu bar, themes, page zoom, New Tab customization, and keyboard shortcuts. Follow the individual current help article for the control you need rather than assuming one path covers all of them.
- Check the browser version and update state. A screenshot or set of instructions may come from a different version, platform, or rollout stage. If the setting remains missing, search the vendor’s official support site for the control name together with your browser, platform, and version.
What changed in Firefox
Mozilla says its June 16, 2026 update retired Firefox’s long-standing General settings page. Many options moved into more specific areas, including Appearance, Accessibility, Languages, and Tabs and browsing; Mozilla says existing preferences remain. Firefox’s visual redesign also changes the look and feel of the interface, including tab shape, component rounding and consistency, icons, spacing, and the color palette. Mozilla says it considers contrast, readability, focus states, keyboard behavior, target sizes, system settings, and visual comfort in its design work. For a denser layout, Mozilla describes Compact Mode as reducing tab and toolbar size, with an auto-compact option for smaller screens. The exact availability and presentation can depend on the Firefox version and platform; consult Mozilla’s current design description for its account of the changes and layout options.
Where to find appearance controls in Edge
For Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft documents this path: Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance. Depending on the Edge version, the page may include theme, toolbar layout and buttons, font size, and page zoom. Microsoft notes that options can differ or be unavailable by version; it also says visual updates roll out gradually, so users may not see changes at the same time. Moved, hidden, or removed?
A changed screen alone cannot tell you whether a feature was removed. First search settings and the browser’s customization pages; then check official support documentation for your exact browser, platform, and version. If the feature is absent from those sources, they may not establish whether it was removed, renamed, or is unavailable in your particular release. Avoid relying on an older screenshot as proof of the current location.
