Blended-fiber sportswear is difficult to recycle because its fibers cannot usually be processed as one uniform material. Polyester, nylon, cotton and elastane have different physical properties and may require different mechanical or chemical treatment. A recycler must identify the actual composition, separate compatible materials and find a process that accepts that specific combination.
Collection and sorting improve the odds that a garment reaches an appropriate route, but they do not automatically separate fibers inside a fabric. Some blends can be processed, while others produce lower-quality material or require chemical systems that are not widely available. Whether a sports garment is recyclable therefore depends on its composition, condition, local waste system and the technology operating there.
Why a blend creates a recycling problem
A textile blend combines two or more fiber types in the same yarn or fabric. Sportswear designers use blends because athletic garments must balance several requirements at once: stretch, recovery, strength, softness, moisture management, fit and resistance to repeated washing. Elastane can provide stretch, while polyester or nylon can add strength and durability; natural fibers may change feel or moisture behavior. These combinations can be useful during wear but difficult at end of life.

Elastane is present in small percentages in some fabrics but can still interfere with a process designed for a single polymer. The exact percentages, dyes, finishes, coatings, thread and trims determine what treatment is technically and economically possible.

Textile Exchange describes separating fiber types as labor-intensive and notes that different fibers have different recycling conditions. In practice, a sorting facility may identify a garment as a polyester blend without having a practical way to extract every polyester, nylon or elastane fiber from the cloth. A blend is therefore a process problem, not merely a labeling problem.
Possible extra components make the product more complex, although the available evidence does not quantify how common each component is in sportswear. A garment may contain a main blended fabric plus sewing thread, elastic, printed graphics, labels, zippers or other trims. Those parts can need separate handling even when the main fabric has a known composition.
What happens in the main recycling routes
| Route | What it does | Where blends create difficulty | Evidence on readiness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical recycling | Physically opens or breaks textiles into fibers | Mixed fibers remain together or behave differently; processing can reduce fiber performance and narrow possible uses | Most established for mono-fiber feedstocks, especially cotton and wool; blends can still be processed in some cases |
| Chemical recycling | Uses dissolution, depolymerisation or other chemistry to recover material | A process suited to one polymer may not accept the other polymers, dyes or added components in the same garment | The JRC reports limited EU capacity and readiness for several routes; PA6 depolymerisation is identified as an exception implemented at scale |
| Sorting and preparation | Identifies, groups and prepares collected garments for reuse or a recovery route | Sorting a garment by composition does not separate all fibers woven into its fabric | Required to direct material to suitable routes, but it cannot solve every separation problem |
Mechanical recycling: the fibers stay physically mixed
Mechanical recycling tears, cuts or otherwise opens fabric and turns it back into a fibrous feedstock. The European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) says this is the most used textile-recycling technique and is best suited to mono-fiber material, preferably cotton and wool. A uniform feedstock gives the recycler fibers with more predictable behavior.
When a blended garment enters a mechanical line, the output can contain fibers with different lengths, strengths and surface characteristics. The result may be usable, but it is not equivalent to the original yarn. The JRC reports that recycled fibers have lower mechanical properties than the original fibers, which restricts the textile applications they can serve. A mechanically recycled blend may therefore be diverted to a lower-grade product rather than becoming new, high-performance sports fabric.
This is not the same as saying that mechanical recycling can never handle blends. Some facilities process mixed inputs, and the output can be used where the reduced or mixed performance is acceptable. The important limitation is predictability: the more varied the feedstock, the harder it is to guarantee a consistent fiber and a high-value textile application.

Chemical recycling: selective chemistry, not a universal reset
Chemical recycling can dissolve a material, depolymerise it into building blocks or otherwise recover a polymer for new production. Because each method relies on specific chemical conditions, a route developed for one polymer cannot automatically process every fiber in a blend. Dyes, finishes and other non-fiber components can also complicate the chemistry and purification steps.
The JRC’s reviewed EU landscape describes low capacity and technical readiness for chemical recycling of some materials and says only a limited set of blend routes is implemented at scale. It identifies polyamide 6 (PA6) depolymerisation as an exception. That finding is a snapshot of the reviewed EU situation, not a claim that chemical recycling is unavailable everywhere or that one operating route can accept all sportswear blends. See the JRC preparatory study for the technical review.

Sorting and feedstock preparation: necessary, but not enough
Collection systems can keep textiles out of general waste and sorting can group garments by likely composition, color, product type or condition. That information helps operators send a mono-fiber item to a suitable mechanical line or a compatible polymer to a chemical process. It does not pull polyester yarns out of a polyester-elastane fabric or remove cotton from a cotton-polyester yarn by itself.
Sorting also has to distinguish reuse from recycling. A garment that can still be worn generally retains more value than one that is immediately shredded or chemically processed. The EU’s Directive (EU) 2025/1892 requires separately collected textiles to be sorted with reuse prioritized; items unsuitable for reuse are then routed to remanufacturing and recycling, including fiber-to-fiber recycling where technology allows. This requirement applies to the European Union and should not be presented as a worldwide rule.
Why sportswear commonly uses combinations of fibers
Sportswear is engineered around performance rather than end-of-life simplicity. A single material may not provide the desired combination of stretch, recovery, abrasion resistance, fit and hand feel. Designers can combine fibers or add a small amount of elastane to meet those use requirements. The evidence does not establish one universal sportswear recipe, so no specific blend should be treated as representative of every shirt, legging or jacket.

The trade-off is that a garment optimized for demanding use may be harder to recover as a uniform feedstock. Even if the main fabric is mostly one polymer, a minor second fiber can make a process unsuitable or reduce the quality of recovered output. The right comparison is not “blend bad, mono-fiber good” in isolation; it is whether the chosen construction delivers the needed service life and has a realistic end-of-life route.
How large is the blended-textile challenge?
The JRC study reports that 48% to 60% of apparel placed on the EU market is made with natural and chemical-fiber blends. This is an apparel statistic for the EU market, not a sportswear-only measurement. It shows why recycling systems cannot be designed only for clean mono-fiber streams.
Recycled polyester figures also need careful interpretation. The JRC, citing Textile Exchange’s 2024 Materials Market Report, reports 8.9 million tonnes of recycled polyester produced globally in 2023, with 98% coming from bottles. That does not mean every recycled-polyester garment is bottle-derived, but it does mean that recycled polyester supply is not evidence that most old polyester clothing is being turned into new clothing. Bottle-to-fiber recycling and garment-to-fiber recycling use different feedstock systems.
For broader context, the European Environment Agency (EEA) says synthetic fibers account for about 60% of clothing and 70% of household textiles. Those figures describe textiles generally, not sportswear specifically. The EEA summarizes the central constraint plainly: “Fibre recycling is especially challenging in the case of synthetic textiles, for both technical and economic reasons.” Read the EEA briefing for that wider synthetic-textile context.
Can sport clothes be completely recycled?
There is no single yes-or-no answer. A mono-fiber garment with a clear composition, limited contamination and access to a compatible facility has a more straightforward route than a mixed garment containing several polymers and trims. A blended item may be mechanically processed, chemically processed in a suitable system, reused, remanufactured or diverted to a lower-grade application. In some locations, none of those routes may be available.

“Completely recycled” can also mean different things. Fiber-to-fiber recycling returns material to textile fiber; other processes produce nonwoven material, insulation or other outputs with different performance. A claim that a garment is “recyclable” should therefore be read as a statement about potential under specified conditions, not a guarantee that every returned garment becomes a new equivalent garment.
What determines the best end-of-life route?
- Composition: the polymers and their percentages, including small amounts of elastane.
- Separability: whether fibers and attached components can be identified and separated at acceptable labor and cost.
- Process compatibility: whether a mechanical or chemical facility accepts that exact feedstock and its dyes or finishes.
- Output requirements: whether recovered material must meet the strength, stretch and consistency needed for a new textile or can serve a lower-grade use.
- Condition: whether the item is still suitable for reuse or repair before recycling is considered.
- Location and scale: whether a collection system and operating facility exist in the relevant waste market.
These factors explain why two garments with similar marketing descriptions can have different outcomes. A recycler needs reliable composition information and a route that is actually operating, not simply a theoretical process described in a laboratory or pilot project.
How design can improve future recyclability
Designers and manufacturers can make recovery easier by matching construction to a known end-of-life route. Options may include using one fiber where performance allows, minimizing unnecessary material combinations, selecting components that can be identified, and providing accurate fiber-content information. Those choices can reduce sorting uncertainty, but they do not automatically make a garment environmentally preferable.
The EEA cautions that no fiber is automatically best across all environmental measures. Fiber selection should fit the product’s function, expected lifetime, required properties and likely end-of-life route. A less recyclable garment that lasts far longer in its intended use is not directly comparable to a short-lived mono-fiber garment. Durability, repairability, use phase and end-of-life infrastructure all belong in the decision.
What consumers can do with a blended sports garment
- Check the fiber label and care information. Record the listed polymers and look for a separate composition for panels, lining or filling.
- Keep wearable items in use. Repair or reuse can preserve more value than sending a functional garment directly to a recycling stream.
- Use the collection system available in your area. Follow the operator’s rules rather than assuming every textile bin accepts technical sportswear.
- Do not claim a guaranteed outcome from a label alone. Ask whether the program sorts by composition and whether it has a route for blended performance fabrics.
- Keep items clean and dry when the program requests it. Contamination can affect sorting and processing, but follow the specific collector’s instructions.
These steps improve the chance of an appropriate outcome; they cannot create a recycling route where the local system lacks one. The strongest consumer signal remains demand for garments that are durable, repairable, clearly labeled and compatible with collection infrastructure.

The practical bottom line
Blended-fiber sportswear is hard to recycle because different fibers bring different processing requirements, and separating them inside a finished fabric is labor-intensive. Mechanical recycling can accept some blends but often produces mixed or weaker fibers. Chemical recycling can recover selected polymers when the feedstock and process match, yet capacity and readiness vary and are limited for many combinations. Better sorting, reuse-first collection and design for separability are necessary, while a garment’s overall environmental value still depends on performance, lifetime and the real end-of-life route in its market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a polyester-elastane garment go in the same recycling stream as a polyester shirt?
Not necessarily. The elastane can change process compatibility, so the correct route depends on the local collector’s sorting rules and whether a facility accepts that specific blend.
Is recycled polyester usually made from old clothing?
Not according to the global 2023 figure cited by the JRC: 98% of 8.9 million tonnes of recycled polyester came from bottles. That statistic does not identify the source of every garment, but it shows that bottle-derived feedstock dominates the reported supply.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy not eliminate all blends from sportswear?
Blends can provide stretch, fit, strength or durability that a single fiber may not deliver for a particular use. The EEA advises judging fiber choices against function, expected life and end-of-life options rather than assuming one fiber is always environmentally best.
