BCE Inc., Bell Canada’s parent company, announced on February 8, 2024, that it planned to reduce its workforce by about 4,800 positions, including 750 contractors. The announced cuts represented 9% of BCE employees. Bell cited falling legacy-business revenue, economic pressures, competition and regulatory decisions it said were discouraging investment. The plan also included major capital-spending reductions, while fewer than 10% of the job cuts were at Bell Media.
How many Bell jobs were being cut?
BCE announced a reduction of approximately 4,800 positions in 2024, including 750 contractor roles. The company said the total equaled 9% of its employees. The figure was an announced reduction target, not evidence that all positions disappeared at once. BCE projected that the restructuring would generate $150 million to $200 million in savings during 2024 and $250 million on an annualized basis. Those are company estimates. Why did BCE say it was making the cuts?
BCE said it needed to lower its cost structure and align expenses with revenue potential. It pointed to declining legacy businesses, high interest rates, inflation, competition and changing consumer preferences. The company also argued that regulatory and government decisions were discouraging investment. That is BCE’s stated explanation, not an independent finding about the causes of the restructuring. Were Bell Media and CTV affected?
Yes. Fewer than 10% of the announced cuts were at Bell Media, but the changes affected local television and radio operations. The Associated Press reported that Bell ended weekday noon CTV newscasts outside Toronto and removed weekend 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts at most CTV and CTV2 stations. Bell also announced the sale of 45 of its 103 regional radio stations. Some employees were notified immediately; the remaining notifications were expected by spring 2024. What was the impact on workers?
Unifor, the union representing workers across Bell operations, said 800 of its members were laid off: about 100 in media and the rest in telecommunications. That union-reported count describes its represented members, while BCE’s 4,800 figure covered the company’s broader announced workforce reduction, including contractors. On October 14, 2025, BCE outlined a three-year plan that targeted approximately $1.5 billion in cost savings by 2028. The company’s four stated priorities were putting customers first, delivering fibre and wireless networks, leading in enterprise with AI-powered solutions, and building a digital media and content powerhouse. That later strategy provides context for the 2024 restructuring, but the announced job reductions, 2024 savings estimates and 2028 target are distinct measures. The available announcements do not establish the final realized savings or the eventual outcome of every announced position reduction.
