Athletic Club midfielder Peio Canales was added to Spain’s under-21 squad on 2 October 2026, alongside attacker Carlos Ruiz “Chupe.” Coach David Gordo called up both players to cover for Jesús Rodríguez, suspended after his sending-off against San Marino, and Carlos Espí, selected for Spain’s senior team. The additions were to join the squad in Ibiza ahead of Spain’s final Group A qualifier against Romania.
Why did Spain U21 call up Peio Canales?
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on 2 October that Canales and Chupe would join the under-21 squad. They covered the vacancies left by Rodríguez’s suspension and Espí’s promotion to the senior team. RFEF said the pair would join the expedition as soon as possible to prepare for the Romania match. RFEF’s call-up announcement does not give a separate reason for selecting Canales over other players.
This was not Canales’s first involvement with Spain U21 during this qualifying campaign. The RFEF player record lists him in earlier qualifiers, including matches against Cyprus, Kosovo, San Marino and Romania in 2025, and Cyprus in March 2026. His RFEF record identifies him as a midfielder from Barrika, born 17 January 2005.
Who will Spain U21 play, and what is at stake?
Spain were scheduled to host Romania on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, at Can Misses in Ibiza. The fixture was listed for 19:00 Spanish peninsular time as Group A’s Matchday 10, the final matchday of qualifying for the 2027 European Under-21 Championship. RFEF said a Spanish win would secure direct qualification without depending on other results. The federation’s fixture listing gives the match details.

Spain entered the game after beating San Marino 0–13 on 1 October, according to the RFEF match report. That result is context for the decisive qualifier; the cited report does not establish that Canales played against San Marino.
What do Canales’s recent figures show?
Statistics available on 3 October 2026 provide a snapshot of Canales’s season, not career totals. UEFA lists Athletic Club as his club and classifies him as a forward on its profile, while the RFEF calls him a midfielder. UEFA’s 2027 U21 competition profile displayed six matches and 269 minutes for him when checked on 3 October.

For Athletic Club’s 2026–27 league season, LaLiga’s profile displayed four appearances, two starts and 220 minutes, with no goals or assists at that time. These live season figures may change as matches are played.
RotoWire separately reported that Canales had returned from a calf injury and also cited four league appearances, including two starts. That injury detail is secondary reporting; the RFEF call-up notice did not discuss his fitness or injury status.
