Self-checkouts often fail because stores ask customers to operate a system built around scanners, bagging scales, payment hardware, and product rules that regularly require human help. When an item does not register, a restricted purchase needs approval, or the machine cannot finish a payment, the customer waits for an attendant who may be watching several kiosks. The technology can reduce some cashier labor, but it does not eliminate work—and it can add delays, shrink, and frustration.

Why does a self-checkout keep calling an attendant?

A self-checkout is not just a scanner and a card reader. It tries to track what was scanned, what was placed in the bagging area, and whether the purchase can proceed. When those signals do not match, the machine pauses the transaction rather than risk completing it incorrectly.

  • Bagging-scale mismatches: The scale may not recognize an item, or its measured weight may differ from the system’s expected value. A customer who moves a bag or sets down an unscanned item can also trigger a hold.
  • Scanning errors: A missed scan can leave the machine waiting for an item to be bagged; a duplicate scan can charge twice. Either situation may need correction.
  • Products that need extra steps: Produce may require finding the correct item in a database, while age-restricted products require an attendant to verify the purchase.
  • Payment and end-of-transaction failures: A cash module can run out of change, or a receipt printer can fail. The customer may have finished scanning but still be unable to complete the transaction normally.

Each exception sends the customer to an attendant. If one employee is responsible for several kiosks, several simultaneous alerts create a queue even while machines sit open. The customer sees available hardware, but the bottleneck is human attention.

Is self-checkout actually faster?

It can feel faster when a shopper has a small, uncomplicated basket and the kiosk works on the first try. But a fair comparison includes the whole transaction: finding products, scanning and bagging them, resolving errors, waiting for age checks, paying, and collecting a receipt. A scan that takes seconds does not make the full checkout faster if an intervention adds a wait.

Self-checkout also transfers part of the cashier’s job to the shopper. Wharton faculty member Santiago Gallino put it this way: “It’s not to make checkout more efficient. They are basically transferring the labor to the customer.” Whether that transfer saves time depends on the basket, the shopper’s familiarity with the machine, kiosk reliability, and how quickly staff can respond.

Self-checkout has become a substantial part of retail checkout, though its use varies by setting and measure. The Associated Press reported that it accounted for 30% of transactions in 2021, nearly double its 2018 share, and that 96% of surveyed retailers offered it (Associated Press). A 2022 study cited by Knowledge at Wharton found it was the dominant checkout form in grocery stores (Knowledge at Wharton). Those figures describe different measures and dates; neither establishes that kiosks are faster for every shopper or transaction.

Does self-checkout increase theft and other losses?

It can make it easier for intentional theft and honest mistakes to go unnoticed. A product may be bagged without being scanned, produce may be entered under the wrong item, or a scan may be duplicated or missed. Those errors affect inventory records as well as revenue, and stores have to weigh the savings from fewer cashier hours against the cost of losses and the controls needed to limit them.

Knowledge at Wharton cited estimates of 3.5%–4% shrink at self-checkout compared with less than 1% for cashier-operated checkout. These are estimates, not a universal rate for every store or retailer (Knowledge at Wharton). The same outlet reported a LendingTree survey in which 15% of respondents said they had stolen at self-checkout and 44% of that group said they planned to do it again; those responses are not estimates of how all shoppers behave (Knowledge at Wharton).

Retailers may accept some loss if they believe labor savings outweigh it. Stewart Samuel, director of retail futures at IGD, described the trade-off: “I think retailers have accepted that there’s going to be some shrink, but that it’s going to be outweighed by the cost savings they have.” That calculation is store-specific: a kiosk’s value depends on equipment and maintenance, attendant coverage, transaction volume, shrink, and the effect on customer experience.

Why are stores limiting or removing self-checkouts?

Retailers are adjusting deployment rather than making one universal choice. The Associated Press has reported Target’s 10-item restriction, Walmart’s location-specific removals, Booths’ removal of machines from most stores, and Wegmans ending its scan-and-go app while retaining registers (Associated Press). Those decisions show that a format that works for some baskets or locations may not suit others.

Labor pressures still matter. The AP, citing U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, reported about 1.2 million cashiers in 2023-era data, compared with 1.4 million in 2019, and a BLS projection of a further 10% decline over the next decade (Associated Press). That context helps explain continued interest in automation; it does not mean self-checkout can replace staffed lanes across all transactions.

Retailers are also trying different approaches. Scan-and-go lets shoppers use a phone to scan items while shopping, then pay through an app, but it still needs controls and may involve exit verification. Amazon’s cashierless-store approach uses a different combination of cameras and systems rather than a conventional kiosk at the end of a staffed lane. Newer controls include missed-scan detection, advanced cameras, and autonomous kiosks. Each approach changes where work and friction occur; none removes the need to manage exceptions, losses, and customer needs.

What works better than an all-or-nothing checkout policy?

A hybrid setup gives shoppers a choice and lets stores match checkout to the transaction. Retail Dive recommends treating self-checkout as a complement to staffed lanes, with nearby help and lower-friction payment and verification (Retail Dive).

  • Use kiosks where the transaction fits: A small, straightforward basket is a more natural kiosk use case than a full cart with many produce items or restricted products.
  • Keep staffed lanes available: Shoppers who prefer assistance, have accessibility needs, or face repeated scanning problems should not be forced into a self-service process.
  • Put help within reach: A kiosk fleet is only as usable as the staff response to age checks, scale alerts, payment problems, and other exceptions.
  • Evaluate total cost and time: Compare full transaction time and labor cost with equipment, maintenance, attendant coverage, shrink, inventory accuracy, and customer satisfaction—not just the number of cashiers on the schedule.

Convenience is not simply a matter of having more machines. As Sara Alloy, retail experience lead for North America at Publicis Sapient, put it: “Wherever a self-checkout introduces additional friction, it’s going to fall short on convenience for shoppers.” The practical question is whether the chosen format makes the entire purchase easier, not just whether it moves scanning away from a cashier.
