“AIMLess” is a nickname that The Information reported engineers inside Apple’s AI/ML group used for the team developing Siri. It is not an official Apple team name, and the account has not been independently established. The name reflects reported frustration around a delayed project—not a measured verdict on every employee or the finished assistant. Apple has since begun rolling out its redesigned Siri in beta with its 2027 software releases, but availability remains limited by device, language, and region.
What does “AIMLess” mean at Apple?
The Information reported that engineers in Apple’s AI/ML group used “AIMLess” as a disparaging nickname for the team developing Siri. The publication’s accessible article page showed its headline and byline, but the article body was behind a subscription gate. The claim should therefore be understood as attributed reporting, not a confirmed Apple designation. There is no basis for saying every employee used the name or that it was formal.
The nickname is a pointed play on “AI” and “aimless.” It became shorthand in coverage for reported problems with Apple’s AI effort, but it does not establish how the eventual product performs. [The Information]
Why did Apple’s Siri project draw criticism?
Apple announced a more ambitious assistant before the features were ready
At its June 2024 Apple Intelligence announcement, Apple described a Siri that could understand richer language, follow requests across multiple turns, use information from a user’s messages and email, recognize what was onscreen, and carry out actions across Apple and third-party apps. Demonstrations included adding an address from Messages to a contact and finding a family member’s flight details in messages and email. These were announced capabilities and examples, not proof that the full feature set had shipped.

Apple framed personal context as central to the design. CEO Tim Cook said, “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence.” Apple also described on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute as elements of its privacy approach; those are Apple’s stated design claims, not an independent assessment of how well the system performs. [Apple’s June 2024 announcement]
Reported delays made the gap between promise and delivery conspicuous
In March 2025, Bloomberg reported that Siri executive Robby Walker told employees at a private meeting that delays to key features had been “ugly and embarrassing.” According to Bloomberg’s account, Walker also said publicly promoting technology before it was ready had made matters worse; the timetable for delivery was unclear. These were remarks reported from a private meeting, not a public Apple statement. [Bloomberg’s March 2025 report]

Bloomberg’s May 2025 feature placed Siri’s difficulties in the context of Apple’s broader AI effort. It described rivals’ voice assistants as feeling more advanced while Siri struggled with basic comprehension and commands. That is Bloomberg’s assessment, not a comprehensive, independently measured comparison of every assistant or task. [Bloomberg’s May 2025 feature]
The Information also reported execution and leadership tensions. Those claims, like the nickname, should remain tied to that publication’s reporting rather than treated as established facts about the whole group. No published, independently attributable statistic in the cited accounts quantifies employee sentiment or measures the overall quality of Siri’s development.

What Apple originally promised from the AI-powered Siri
The planned upgrade was more than a conversational interface. Apple’s 2024 vision combined four capabilities:
- More natural conversation: better language understanding and the ability to handle follow-up requests.
- Personal context: retrieving relevant details from information such as messages and email.
- Onscreen awareness: understanding what a user is looking at and responding to requests about it.
- Actions across apps: carrying out requests using Apple apps and, as announced, third-party apps.
The practical difference would be an assistant that can connect a request to what is on the device and act on it, rather than merely respond to a standalone command. Apple’s launch examples illustrated that ambition; they should not be read as a guarantee that every example or capability was available immediately in 2024.

Is the new Siri available now?
Yes, but as a beta rollout rather than a universally available finished feature. Apple said on September 14, 2026 that its more conversational Siri was beginning to roll out in beta with its 2027 software releases. Apple described personal-context understanding, broad world knowledge, onscreen awareness, and systemwide app actions as part of the assistant. Its update said English was available initially, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support expected the following month. [Apple’s September 2026 update]
Apple’s software executive Craig Federighi described the release as “a dramatically more capable and conversational assistant designed to help users find information and get things done throughout the day.” That statement describes Apple’s intent; beta status and eligibility limits matter when judging what a particular user can access. Who can use Siri AI, and what are the limits?
As of October 8, 2026, Apple Support says access depends on supported hardware, matching device and Siri languages, and an eligible Apple Account region. The support page lists compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro models; check that page for the current model-by-model requirements because eligibility can change with software releases. [Apple Support: Siri AI availability and requirements]
- Language: Apple Support currently lists English availability and requires the device language and Siri language to match a supported language. Apple’s September rollout announcement said French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support was expected the following month.
- European Union: Apple Support says EU residents cannot use Siri AI on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. Its guide lists macOS and visionOS availability subject to its English-language and account-region conditions.
- Mainland China: Apple says Siri AI does not currently work when an Apple Account is set to mainland China.
Apple has cited privacy and security concerns in explaining the initial iPhone and iPad exclusion in the EU. In June 2026, the European Commission disputed Apple’s explanation and said the decision not to launch the feature there was Apple’s. That is a disagreement between Apple and the Commission, not a settled independent legal conclusion. [Apple Support; European Commission statement]
Does Siri AI use Google Gemini?
Apple and Google announced in January 2026 that Apple’s next-generation Foundation Models would be based on Google Gemini models and cloud technology. Apple’s September update said the models were custom-built in collaboration with Google and Gemini. This is a model collaboration within Apple Intelligence; it does not mean Siri is simply the Google Gemini app. [Google’s January 2026 statement; Apple’s September 2026 update]
