Apple Watch looks like a watch, but it spends much of its time behaving like a small computer. Its rounded-rectangle display gives notifications, lists, health metrics, photos, complications and app controls room to fit—jobs that a circular dial can make harder. That is why Apple Watch’s shape is more than a visual preference: changing it would affect both the interface and the hardware around it. A round model has reportedly been explored, but there is no confirmed announcement that Apple plans to sell one.
Why is the Apple Watch square?
It is not a perfect square: Apple Watch has a rounded-rectangle screen and case. People call it square because its display is visibly wider and taller than a traditional circular watch face. The shape suits a device that must show changing information and let people interact with it, rather than only present the time on an analog dial.
On a conventional watch, hands sweep across a round face, so a circle fits the main job. Apple Watch also displays text, notifications, activity data, photos, menus and buttons. A rectangle offers a broad, continuous area for arranging those elements into lines and rows. That makes the form factor part of the interface, not just a case design choice.
The distinction matters whenever a user checks a message preview, scrolls through a list, looks at a workout metric or taps a control. A circle can show those things, but its curved boundary leaves less room near the edges and corners. The rectangular layout gives software designers a more predictable canvas.

Would a round Apple Watch be better for reading and apps?
Not automatically. A round watch can feel familiar as a timepiece, but the rectangular screen is better suited to many of the information-heavy tasks Apple Watch performs.
Notifications, lists and text
Text is generally arranged in rectangular lines. Names, appointment details, messages and menu options can fill a rectangular display from edge to edge without having to accommodate a curved perimeter. On a circle, lines near the top and bottom would be shorter, or the interface would need to leave more unused space to preserve legibility.
That trade-off is central to the design argument Jonathan Ive made in a 2015 New Yorker account of Apple Watch’s development. “When a huge part of the function is lists”—of names, or appointments—“a circle doesn’t make any sense,” Ive said. The point is not that circular displays cannot show text; it is that the shape is less naturally suited to repeated rows of information.

Complications and controls
Complications are the small pieces of information and shortcuts placed on a watch face. A rounded rectangle can use its corners for complications while keeping a broad central area available for the time or other content. Those corner positions are useful real estate rather than empty decoration.
A circular screen would remove those corners. Apple could redesign watch faces and reposition complications, but the resulting layout would have less area in some regions and a different balance overall. Controls, charts and other app elements would face similar constraints: designers would need to decide which information to shrink, move, simplify or omit.

Photos and changing content
Photos and many app screens are rectangular, too. A rectangular watch display can show more of their natural frame without cropping or leaving conspicuous gaps. A circle can still display a photo, but the rounded boundary clips its corners; whether that is acceptable depends on the content and the way the screen is used.
How much screen area would a circle lose?
Macworld’s 2026 analysis estimates that changing a same-width square to a circle would reduce display area by around 20%. That is a geometry-based estimate from the article, not an Apple-published specification or a result from a controlled usability test. It helps illustrate the design trade-off, but it should not be treated as a measured difference between current Apple Watch models.
The comparison assumes the circle and square have the same width or diameter. A rounded-rectangle Apple Watch is not a perfect square, so the estimate does not describe the exact area of a particular model’s screen. Nor does it establish how Apple would size or engineer a hypothetical round version. A larger circular watch could recover some area, but it would also change the product’s dimensions; the estimate is useful for understanding the basic geometry, not predicting a future device.
Less display area would put pressure on the interface. Apple could keep information smaller, show fewer items at once, rely more on scrolling, or reserve more of the screen for a single task. Those are possible design responses, not confirmed plans. The point is that the shape change would force choices about what users see and how they reach it.
Would a round screen affect battery and sensors?
It could affect the internal packaging, but the precise consequences for a hypothetical model are not established. Macworld’s analysis connects the area trade-off to possible battery and sensor compromises; that is a design concern, not a published Apple specification for a round watch.

A watch has limited room inside its case. The display is only one part of the package, alongside the battery and sensors. Changing the display geometry could require Apple to reconsider how those components fit together. It does not follow that a round model would necessarily have worse battery life or fewer sensors: Apple could change the case or internal layout. Without a real product or engineering specification, exact effects cannot be stated.
This is why “make the display round” is not simply a cosmetic adjustment. A different outline can influence the usable screen area and the arrangement of components around and behind it. Apple would need to decide whether a new case size or internal design preserved the product’s practical capabilities.
Why would watchOS and apps need to change?
Apple Watch’s software has been built around the established rectangular display. A circular model would require Apple to revisit watch faces, complications, Apple’s own apps, third-party apps and familiar layout conventions—not merely redraw the outer edge of the screen.
Watch faces and complications
Watch faces are designed to arrange time, complications and visual elements within the available screen. Existing placements, especially those that use corners, would not transfer unchanged to a circle. Apple would need to provide layouts that fit the new boundary, and users might have to choose between different information arrangements.
Apple and third-party apps
Apps rely on screen dimensions and established placement for text, lists, charts and controls. Developers could adapt their interfaces, but a new shape would introduce work across the app ecosystem. Apple would also have to make its own apps feel coherent on both forms or decide that the round model needed its own interface rules.

That creates a migration cost: the company would be supporting a second layout system, replacing familiar conventions, or asking developers and users to adjust. If the main gain were novelty rather than a concrete improvement in use, the redesign burden would be difficult to justify.
What does Apple’s current lineup and watchOS say about the shape?
As of November 3, 2026, Apple’s comparison page lists Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Apple Watch SE 3 as current models. Apple’s watchOS 27 page describes features including Siri AI, a dynamic app grid, a one-hand tap gesture, Workout Buddy improvements, and additional health and interface changes.
Those examples show the product continuing to develop as an active computing platform, with software for interacting with apps, information and health features. They do not prove that Apple will never experiment with another shape. They show only that the current family and its software remain organized around the established Apple Watch form.

Why does Apple keep the same recognizable silhouette?
The rounded rectangle, curved corners and Digital Crown have become a recognizable Apple Watch combination. The shape distinguishes it from the many round Android smartwatches already on the market, while also supporting the interface Apple has built around it. A circular version might look more like a conventional watch, but it could also make Apple Watch less visually distinctive.
Brand identity is not the only reason to retain the design: the rectangular screen has practical advantages for lists, text, complications and apps. But those advantages and the recognizable silhouette reinforce each other. A change would need to offer a clear user benefit strong enough to offset both the interface compromises and the loss of a familiar visual cue.
What would make a circular Apple Watch worth the trade-off?
A round design would need to solve a real user problem, not just look different. Apple would have to show why its new shape improves the experience enough to make smaller or differently arranged information, redesigned software and hardware changes worthwhile.
That benefit could not be assumed from the shape alone. A circle may appeal to people who prefer the appearance of a traditional watch, but the available evidence does not establish that consumers broadly prefer it or that it would be more usable. There is no independent market survey or controlled usability study cited here proving that people want a round Apple Watch.
