Why did Apple pull iPadOS 18 for the M4 iPad Pro?
Some users reported that their M4 iPad Pro would not turn on after they tried to install iPadOS 18. Apple responded by temporarily removing the update for those models while it worked on a fix. The withdrawal concerned M4 iPad Pro models; the reports did not say Apple pulled iPadOS 18 from every iPad.
In a statement provided to MacRumors, Apple said: “We have temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models as we work to resolve an issue that is impacting a small number of devices.” That description is qualitative: Apple did not give a total, percentage, or failure rate. MacRumors reported the withdrawal and Apple’s statement on September 17, 2024.

Apple’s support page confirms October 3, 2024, as the release date for iPadOS 18.0.1, but that page covers security content rather than documenting the bricking reports. Apple’s iOS 18.0.1 and iPadOS 18.0.1 security-content page and MacRumors’ October 3 report provide those distinct pieces of information.

Did iPadOS 18 brick M4 iPad Pro models?
Reports said that some M4 iPad Pro devices would not power on after users attempted to install iPadOS 18. Apple acknowledged an issue affecting a “small number” of devices. The available reports do not establish that most M4 iPad Pro units were affected, or how many devices failed.
They also do not establish the technical root cause or prove that any particular installation sequence caused the problem. The fact that the failure followed an installation attempt does not, by itself, explain what went wrong inside the device or software.

What should you do if an iPad Pro will not turn on after an update?
A September 20 MacRumors report about Apple’s internal service-provider memo said technicians were instructed to try a force restart. That was reported technician guidance, not a guarantee that the step would recover every device. If an iPad Pro is currently unresponsive after an update, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider for advice appropriate to the device and its condition. The 2024 incident reports are historical, not current troubleshooting instructions.

Yes. Apple’s support page dates iPadOS 18.0.1 to October 3, 2024, and MacRumors reported that this release restored update availability to M4 iPad Pro models and addressed the incident. That answers what happened in 2024; it does not establish which iPadOS version is currently offered to a particular device.
