Analysts praised the pairing because the companies’ communications-chip portfolios appeared complementary: Avago brought strength in analog, radio-frequency and optical components, while Broadcom added digital system-on-chip products, Ethernet and Wi-Fi. The proposed fit also came with concerns about cost-cutting, layoffs and whether Broadcom’s engineering culture would endure.
Why was the Avago–Broadcom combination praised?
The praise was mainly about complementarity rather than scale. EE Times described Avago as stronger in analog products connected to optical and wireless communications, while Broadcom focused more on digital system-on-chip (SoC) products for smart-home and data-center markets. The publication characterized the companies as having little product overlap, some areas of synergy and substantial potential cost savings. EE Times
That distinction mattered: a buyer with a smaller revenue base was not simply purchasing a duplicate product portfolio. Analysts saw opportunities to combine technologies and sell into related communications markets, while reducing overlapping costs.
How large was the deal, and how did the companies compare?
The Los Angeles Times reported the 2015 agreement at $37 billion in cash and stock and said the combined company would take the name Broadcom Ltd. Los Angeles Times Revenue figures cited by EE Times that year show why the acquisition seemed counterintuitive: Avago was smaller by revenue than the company it planned to acquire.

What technology synergies did analysts identify?
Radio frequency, fiber optics and baseband
Will Strauss of Forward Concepts pointed to a gap that Broadcom could help fill. He said Avago was strong in radio frequency (RF) and fiber optics but weak in baseband technology, which Broadcom had; together, he argued, these capabilities could fit cloud radio access network (C-RAN) offerings linking remote radio heads to fiber networks and the cloud. Ethernet, SerDes and Wi-Fi
Handel Jones highlighted the relationship between Broadcom’s Ethernet technology and Avago’s SerDes (serializer/deserializer) products. He also saw a connection between Broadcom Wi-Fi combo products and Avago’s RF activities. These were analysts’ strategic-fit arguments at the time, not proof that particular combined products or sales resulted. EE Times analyst comments
Adjacent markets and customers
Broadcom’s exposure to smart-home and data-center SoCs complemented Avago’s analog communications strengths. Together, those areas offered a rationale for serving related mobile, cloud and data-center needs with a broader portfolio. The case for a fit rested on adjacent capabilities and potential customer overlap, not a claim that every product line directly complemented every other one.

What were the main concerns about the merger?
Cost savings could mean layoffs or spin-outs
EE Times reported that savings might come through layoffs and spin-outs. That raised a practical concern: cost reduction could improve the deal’s financial appeal while disrupting teams and expertise needed to develop and support semiconductor products. EE Times
Shareholder value versus engineering continuity
In companion commentary, Junko Yoshida questioned whether the transaction chiefly served shareholders and whether Broadcom’s engineering discipline and leadership would survive integration. These were governance and culture concerns, not evidence that engineering capability was necessarily lost. EE Times commentary

Former Broadcom leaders offered a more affirmative view. Henry Nicholas called the merger “a logical progression,” while Henry Samueli recalled the founders’ vision of creating a world leader in communications semiconductors. Their statements framed the combination as consistent with Broadcom’s original ambition; they do not, on their own, establish how integration or cost savings ultimately worked out. In 2015, the case for the combination was clear at the portfolio level: Avago’s analog, RF and optical strengths could complement Broadcom’s digital SoCs, Ethernet and Wi-Fi, with relatively little overlap and possible cost savings. The same savings strategy raised questions about workforce disruption, shareholder priorities and engineering culture. The contemporaneous assessments support a rationale for the deal, but do not establish the exact realization of synergies after integration.
