An Insta360 Gaussian splat can look blurry or distorted because of soft source footage, 360 stitching defects, incorrect panorama handling, poor camera poses, or Gaussian artifacts. Find the earliest stage where the defect appears: export and inspect the original footage first, then check stitching and frame preparation before changing splat settings. A downstream adjustment cannot restore detail that was never captured.
First find where the blur or distortion starts
Compare the camera or app preview with an exported clip or frame at the quality you intend to use. Insta360 says previews may be compressed to keep playback smooth; an exported original is a better basis for judging image quality. The app also offers an “Original Mode” preview option.
If the export is sharp but the preview is soft, do not reject the footage or change Gaussian settings based on the preview alone. If the export is soft too, inspect the lens and capture conditions before rebuilding the splat.
Use the visible symptom to narrow it down
| What you see | Likely stage to investigate |
|---|---|
| The preview is soft, but the exported image is clear | Preview quality or compression |
| A localized seam, doubled subject, or warped object in the 360 export | Stitching, parallax, or accessory settings |
| The source looks acceptable, but the splat bends, smears, or has poor alignment | Panorama conversion, camera model, or poses |
| Long, spiky blobs appear in the trained splat | Gaussian representation and optimization |
Check the original capture before retraining
Inspect exported frames for dirty or damaged lenses, motion blur, low light, and settings that may affect sharpness. Insta360’s available sharpness and bitrate controls vary by camera model. If footage is consistently out of focus across modes and scenes, Insta360 advises professional repair diagnostics; repeated retraining will not correct a camera that is failing to focus.

Wide-angle optics can look less sharp or more distorted near the edges. Underwater lens guards can also cause edge blur through refraction, and other accessories change the optical path. A guard is therefore not a general-purpose blur fix.
Fix 360 stitching defects at the export stage
In a 360 camera, the two lenses view nearby objects from different positions. That parallax can make a close subject appear doubled or misaligned near the stitch boundary. A lens guard or other optical accessory can also change stitching, so the stitching selection must match what was fitted.

Try the least disruptive stitching checks first
- Confirm the lens and guards are clean and undamaged. If safe and applicable, test without third-party guards or filters.
- Verify the lens-guard or accessory setting matches the hardware on the camera.
- Export through the Insta360 app or Studio and compare the available stitching choices. For close-object cases, Insta360’s X-series guidance suggests AI Stitching in the app or Optical Flow Stitching in Studio.
- If the scene can be recaptured, keep close faces and other important subjects away from the stitch boundary. Insta360 gives about 0.8 m as a minimum subject distance in X-series close-shot advice; separate X4 guidance suggests at least 1 m to reduce visible stitch lines. These are manufacturer recommendations for particular guidance, not universal thresholds.
Stitching options can improve a seam, but they cannot remove every parallax effect or recover detail lost to the optics. If the defect is a framing warp rather than a seam, Insta360 Studio offers FOV and perspective adjustments for supported footage, and the app has a Dewarp function. These tools change the view; they do not repair missing detail or incorrect reconstruction poses.
Prepare equirectangular footage for reconstruction
A 360 panorama is equirectangular, not an ordinary perspective photograph. Camera models describe how image pixels map to rays; using the wrong model or inaccurate camera poses can bend geometry and smear otherwise usable detail. Nerfstudio documents equirectangular and spherical camera models separately from perspective and fisheye models.

Nerfstudio’s custom-data guide describes processing 360-camera equirectangular video with --camera-type equirectangular and sampling perspective images from each panorama. Its documented workflow suggests 8 perspective samples per panorama by default, with 14 as an option when detail or alignment needs improvement. Those are workflow suggestions, not guaranteed settings for every scene.
Choose frames for coverage and sharpness
- Inspect representative extracted frames and remove genuinely blurry ones. More frames are not automatically better when they are soft or redundant.
- Seek varied, overlapping views so the reconstruction has repeated observations of the scene.
- Nerfstudio suggests roughly 3 video frames per second as a starting sampling rate in its custom-data workflow, while explicitly describing it as an experimental heuristic, not a hard rule.
- For head-mounted footage, Nerfstudio recommends holding the camera above the head so the operator is concentrated near the bottom of the panorama. If the hand or head contaminates that region, crop it out; its guide gives 20% as an example, not a universal crop.
Do not feed a full equirectangular panorama to a perspective-only training or rendering path as though it were a normal photograph. Nerfstudio’s documented Splatfacto Gaussian rasterizer assumes perspective cameras and cannot directly render equirectangular or fisheye images. The documented equirectangular route samples perspective images during data processing. This limitation is version-sensitive, so check the documentation for the version you have installed.

Change Gaussian settings only for Gaussian artifacts
If the trained splat contains elongated, spiky Gaussian blobs, Nerfstudio documents the option pipeline.model.use_scale_regularization to encourage more even Gaussian shapes. Evaluate it when that specific artifact is present. It is not a general sharpening switch and will not fix soft source frames, a bad stitch, an incorrect camera model, or poor poses.
Calibrate supported cameras if stitching changed
If stitching changed after a drop or lens replacement, Insta360 documents built-in stitching calibration for X4 Air, X5, and X6. The documented procedure calls for removing accessories and calibrating outdoors in a well-lit, open location, with large objects roughly 10 m away. Do not assume this calibration is available on every Insta360 model; confirm support for the exact camera.

A practical troubleshooting order
- Export one representative sample at full intended quality and compare it with the preview.
- If the export is soft, check lens condition, focus, motion, light, and model-specific image settings.
- If the export has seams or ghosting, check accessory settings and compare app or Studio stitching options.
- Inspect the actual training frames; discard blurry images and ensure the set has useful overlap and varied views.
- Confirm that the processing workflow understands equirectangular input, converts or models it correctly, and estimates sensible camera poses.
- Only then tune Gaussian optimization, using scale regularization specifically for long, spiky splats.
- If a supported model’s stitching changed after impact or lens service, use its documented calibration; seek repair diagnostics if all exported media remains out of focus.
