If a mobile game looks soft, raise its in-game render resolution or try a higher-quality upscaling mode if available. If edges look harsh or haloed, lower or disable sharpening first. The right controls depend on whether the game is running on a phone, in Android Emulator, or through a supported PC graphics setup; desktop GPU settings are not fixes for native phone gameplay.
Why upscaled games can look soft or too sharp
Upscaling produces a higher-resolution output from an image rendered at a lower resolution. Arm describes Neural Super Sampling (NSS) as rendering fewer pixels to reduce GPU work, then using a trained model to reconstruct a higher-quality output. Qualcomm describes Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR) as a single-pass spatial upscaler optimized for Adreno GPUs. Because the starting image contains fewer directly rendered pixels, the reconstructed result may lack detail and look soft; that is a general explanation, not a diagnosis of any particular game. Arm’s overview of neural technologies for mobile games and Qualcomm’s GSR description explain these approaches.
Sharpening can make edges seem more defined, but too much can produce a crunchy appearance or halos. Some upscalers combine sharpening with reconstruction: Qualcomm says GSR integrates edge sharpening. A second sharpening control, such as one in a game or desktop GPU utility, may compound the effect. “AI upscaling” is not one universal algorithm or quality level.
Upscaling is not the same as frame generation
Arm distinguishes neural super sampling, which reconstructs an output from fewer rendered pixels, from neural frame-rate upscaling, which generates intermediate frames, and neural denoising, which targets ray-tracing noise. Those techniques address different problems. A frame-generation option is not automatically the setting to change when a still image looks blurry.

First identify where the game is rendered
- Phone or tablet: Start with the game’s own graphics settings. NVIDIA Control Panel and AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition are desktop GPU tools, not general Android-phone fixes.
- Android Emulator on a computer: Check the emulator’s graphics mode if the display is incorrect or unstable. Emulator graphics settings affect this rendering path, not a game running directly on a phone.
- PC game or streamed game using desktop GPU scaling: In-game options and supported GPU utility settings may both affect the image. Avoid applying multiple sharpening filters at once.
How to troubleshoot blur or harsh edges
- Compare the same scene before changing anything. Use a still view and then move the camera. Note whether the problem is lost fine detail, jagged or harsh edges, or instability in motion. Change one option at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Open the game’s graphics options. Look for render resolution or resolution scale, upscaling mode or quality, anti-aliasing, and sharpness. Names and availability vary by game; there is no universal setting sequence.
- If the image is soft, test higher source detail. Increase render resolution or resolution scale, or select a higher-quality upscaling mode if offered. Rendering more pixels can require more GPU work, so performance, power use, or heat may be affected. Arm and Qualcomm describe reduced GPU workload as a purpose of their mobile upscaling approaches; the actual tradeoff depends on the game and device.
- If edges look harsh, reduce sharpening first. Lower the game’s sharpness slider or turn it off, then compare. If you are playing through a supported desktop GPU path, check whether a driver-level sharpening feature is also active and avoid stacking it with in-game sharpening.
- If the problem started after a game update, reset that game’s graphics settings. Re-test before changing unrelated device or system settings. This is a low-risk diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
Android Emulator: check its graphics mode
For Android Emulator only, Android Developers recommends the auto graphics setting for most users. The host option uses the computer’s GPU hardware; software graphics backends are alternatives when hardware modes cause problems. An unsupported acceleration option can cause crashes or incorrect images. Follow Android’s Android Emulator graphics configuration guidance for the available modes and setup details. Do not apply emulator instructions to a real phone’s game output.
Desktop GPU controls apply only to supported PC setups
If the game is running on a PC and its image passes through desktop GPU scaling, check the relevant utility as well as the game settings. NVIDIA documents an adjustable Sharpen control in its Manage 3D Settings reference. AMD describes Radeon Image Sharpening as contrast-adaptive sharpening and documents compatibility considerations in its Radeon Image Sharpening and Virtual Super Resolution guide. The exact controls and support depend on the GPU, driver, and setup. These desktop options do not provide a general setting for native Android gameplay.

Compare modes without guessing
When a game offers several rendering or upscaling modes, compare them in the same scene and under similar conditions. Check:
- Fine detail and edge quality in a still image.
- Image stability during camera movement.
- Frame rate and perceived smoothness.
- Power use or heat over a consistent play session.
There are no independent cross-device measurements here that establish one mode as best for particular phones or games. Qualcomm reports “two times performance improvement compared to other mobile upscaling solutions,” but that is Qualcomm’s general vendor claim, not an independent benchmark or a result guaranteed for every game and device.

What not to change as a routine fix
Do not edit protected game files, install unofficial “AI enhancer” apps, or force hidden driver parameters as a first-line fix. Supported settings in the game, emulator, or applicable desktop GPU utility provide a safer way to isolate the cause.
