Aavid Thermal Products Inc. changed its name to Aavid Thermalloy LLC in early 2000 after Aavid Thermal Technologies acquired heat-sink supplier Thermalloy Inc. The reported purchase price was $79.5 million. The deal added Thermalloy’s cooling expertise and was intended to expand Aavid’s global operations.
Why did Aavid Thermal change its name?
The name change followed Aavid Thermal Technologies’ acquisition of Thermalloy Inc., which had been owned by Bowthorpe. Aavid Thermal Products Inc. became Aavid Thermalloy LLC in early 2000, combining the Aavid and Thermalloy names to reflect the acquired business.
EE Times reported the transaction at $79.5 million. At the time, Aavid Thermal had reported sales of $209 million in 1998. The combined Aavid Thermalloy operation had 13 manufacturing plants serving Asia, Europe and North America, according to the same report. EE Times’ 2000 report
What did Thermalloy and Aavid Thermalloy make?
Thermalloy was a heat-sink supplier. A 2006 SEC filing describes Aavid Thermalloy’s broader thermal-management product range as heat sinks, interface materials, attachment accessories, heat spreaders, liquid-cooling devices and phase-change devices. What did Aavid’s distribution strategy mean?
In an EE Times report on distribution, Aavid executive Goucher said, “We don’t intend to compete with our channel partners.” The statement described the company’s approach to working with distributors rather than competing against them directly. EE Times report
