AAA games look and play differently because a studio’s creative direction and gameplay priorities shape how it uses its tools. An engine supplies technology; it does not prescribe a game’s art style, core mechanics, world design, or performance trade-offs.

Why a shared engine does not make games look alike

A game engine is a collection of tools and systems for building a game, not a finished visual identity. Studios choose which features to use, what to modify, and where to add their own technology. The same engine can support a colorful cel-shaded rhythm game, a moody science-fiction shooter, or an open-world fantasy adventure.

Avalanche Software said it moved from its proprietary engine to Unreal Engine for Hogwarts Legacy partly because of the editor, open-world, and rendering tools. The studio also described using plugin and source-code access to support unique systems and optimization. Housemarque used Unreal Engine for Returnal, but paired it with Blueprints for rapid prototyping and its proprietary Kaamos visual-effects technology as a UE4 plugin. These developer accounts illustrate the engine as a starting point rather than a creative identity: Avalanche on building Hogwarts Legacy’s open world and Housemarque on the evolution of Returnal.

Unreal Engine does not inherently make games look the same or guarantee realism. The studio decides how its rendering tools serve the intended style, and what to build or tune beyond the engine’s defaults.

Art direction gives each game its visual identity

Art direction is the set of choices that makes a game’s images feel like they belong together: palette, contrast, shape, atmosphere, and visual clarity. It can be realistic, stylized, inked, or cel-shaded. More detailed lighting or geometry can support any of those directions; technical fidelity alone does not determine a game’s style.

Hi-Fi RUSH: clean, colorful, and cel-shaded

Tango Gameworks said the visual direction for Hi-Fi RUSH was established early. Game Director John Johanas described the team’s guide words as “Colorful,” “Sharp,” and “Clean.” Lead Graphics Programmer Kosuke Tanaka said the team adapted modern lighting methods to serve its deliberately stylized, 2D-like look. In other words, the lighting technology was made to support the art direction, not the other way around. Tango Gameworks explains Hi-Fi RUSH’s pop-art style.

Gears 5: distinct visual signatures for different biomes

For Gears 5, The Coalition aimed to give each biome a distinct visual signature. That goal shaped not only color and atmosphere but also how much environmental detail the team could afford to place in larger spaces. Its account connects visual identity to content density and the studio’s performance target, rather than treating art as a separate layer added after technical decisions. Gameplay priorities shape how a game feels

Players often recognize a game by its rhythm of movement, aiming, combat, exploration, and response to input. Those qualities come from design choices and repeated tuning; choosing an engine does not automatically create them.

Returnal: arcade action in a larger production

Housemarque’s move into AAA production did not mean leaving behind its arcade-design heritage. Business Developer and Marketing Director Mikael Haveri said, “Gameplay as a nuanced core pillar still stands strongly at the center of our upcoming games.” Art Director Ville Kallio, identified in the interview as “Louden,” said the studio’s art direction comes from its story and concepts, using subtext and meaning to guide visuals and worldbuilding. The result is a useful example of a studio carrying a familiar gameplay sensibility into a story-driven alien world. Housemarque on the evolution of Returnal.

Ghostrunner: movement first, with precision to match

In Ghostrunner, One More Level made high-speed movement central to play. Narrative Designer and Writer Jan Gąsior put the priority simply: “The most important thing was to keep the player moving.” The studio said movement took extensive tuning to balance smoothness with precise control. Levels also had to remain readable while leaving room for freedom in encounters; the team observed player behavior to balance routes and options. This shows why game feel is built through iteration on core mechanics, not selected from an engine menu. One More Level on Ghostrunner’s free-flowing movement.

World design reflects what a game asks players to do

The structure of a game’s spaces follows its intended activities. A game built around fast, skillful encounters needs different routes and sightlines from one built around exploration and interconnected objectives. Those priorities affect what the player sees, how they move through it, and which systems link one activity to another.

Avalanche described Hogwarts Legacy as moving beyond linear levels by giving players “multiple overlapping goals” connected through systems. For example, increasing inventory capacity involved completing trials that called for items players cultivated or purchased and particular spells. That kind of design makes world progression depend on several connected activities rather than a single straight sequence. Avalanche on building Hogwarts Legacy’s open world.

Performance targets influence what players see

Every game has to balance visual effects, object density, image quality, responsiveness, and performance against its target hardware. A studio may reduce or tune some elements to preserve the qualities it considers most important. Those choices are game-specific, not universal rules for AAA development.

Hi-Fi RUSH: responsiveness for rhythm action

Tango Gameworks said that, because Hi-Fi RUSH is a rhythm-action game, “a solid 60 FPS takes priority over graphics.” That is the studio’s stated production priority for this game, not a prescription for every title. The point is that the desired play experience can determine which visual or technical trade-offs a team accepts. Tango Gameworks on Hi-Fi RUSH’s style and priorities.

Gears 5: balancing dense environments and performance

The Coalition described controlling effects and object density while targeting 60 FPS in Gears 5. Larger open areas made the balance harder: they needed enough objects to feel alive without exceeding the performance budget. This helps explain why two games with similar technical tools may differ in environmental density or visual effects—the developers may be optimizing for different spaces and priorities. The Coalition on performance and environments in Gears 5.

Borderlands 4: preserving an inked look with newer rendering options

Gearbox said retaining the Borderlands 4 inked look alongside newer rendering options required trade-offs. The studio described using material and lighting tools to control palette and tone, and noted that advanced features such as Lumen could require adjustments. A new rendering feature is not automatically an improvement if it works against the game’s intended visual identity. Gearbox on preserving Borderlands 4’s inked art style.

How to compare games without reducing them to graphics

“Better graphics” is too narrow a way to compare games that aim for different effects. A more useful comparison asks what each team is trying to make the player see and do, and how its tools and constraints serve that goal.

  • Art direction: Is the game realistic, stylized, inked, or cel-shaded? Consider palette, contrast, silhouette, atmosphere, and readability.
  • Gameplay pillar: Does it prioritize arcade flow, speed and precision, exploration, or another core loop?
  • World structure: Are the spaces linear encounters, open-world traversal, or environments organized around combat and movement options?
  • Production approach: Does the studio rely on engine tools, add plugins, modify technology, or build custom systems?
  • Performance trade-offs: Which qualities—such as frame rate, effects, or environmental density—does the studio say it prioritized?

These questions help explain design intent, but they are not a controlled technical comparison. Developer interviews, including the Unreal Engine-hosted accounts cited here, describe what individual teams say they built; they do not establish neutral, cross-game benchmark results. Performance can also vary by game version, platform, and patch, so production targets should not be read as current benchmark measurements.
