If a WhatsApp chat notification says only “WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp: 1 new message,” the alert may be working as intended: Chat Lock hides the sender and message details to protect privacy. If no alert arrives at all, check notification permissions, mute status, background data, and battery restrictions. WhatsApp calls the feature Chat Lock; the wording may differ in your app’s language.
First, tell privacy hiding from a notification failure

Chat Lock itself is documented as hiding notification details; WhatsApp does not say that locking a chat blocks all message alerts. Meta’s May 15, 2023 Chat Lock announcement says, “Locking a chat automatically hides the details of the conversation in notifications.”
If the notification appears without a name or message
This is the expected privacy behavior for a locked chat, rather than evidence that the message was not delivered. WhatsApp says the alert may display “WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp: 1 new message” instead of the contact and message details. Keep Chat Lock enabled if you want those details concealed.
Show the chat identity by unlocking it
- Open WhatsApp and go to the chat list.
- Find the locked chat. WhatsApp’s notification guidance describes pressing and holding the chat, then choosing Unlock chat; authentication may be required.
- Confirm the unlock if prompted.
Unlocking removes Chat Lock’s extra protection for that conversation, so its details may appear in notifications again. It is not a fix for a genuine delivery failure. WhatsApp says calls from contacts in locked chats are not blocked.

If no notification arrives while WhatsApp is closed
WhatsApp distinguishes push notifications, which arrive when the app is closed or in the background, from notifications shown while you are using the app. For missing push alerts, check these settings in order:
- Allow WhatsApp notifications in your phone settings. Check that the app is permitted to send notifications, including the alert types you want.
- Check background data. Restrictions on background data can affect push notifications.
- Review battery restrictions. Battery-saving or app-restriction settings may limit background activity. The available controls depend on your phone and operating-system version.
- Check WhatsApp’s in-app notification settings. Compare them with the phone’s settings: WhatsApp notes that device settings override its in-app notification choices.
These checks address delivery and alert behavior; unlocking a chat does not remove a system-level restriction.

If alerts are missing or silent for only one chat
- Open the conversation and check whether it is muted. WhatsApp says muting prevents the device from alerting you to incoming notifications from that chat.
- Review the conversation’s notification settings in WhatsApp, including any custom settings for an individual or group chat.
- Check WhatsApp’s notification permission and categories in the phone’s settings. System-level settings can override the app’s choices.
Check notification settings by phone
Android
On Android, a common route is Settings > Notifications > App notifications > WhatsApp. Check the main app switch and any relevant notification categories. Some Android versions let you choose whether categories are alerting or silent. Also review lock-screen notification visibility and sensitive-content settings if the alert arrives but its details are hidden.
Android menu names and available controls vary by device maker and operating-system version; Google’s Android notification settings guidance cautions that steps can differ. A lock-screen privacy setting can hide notification content independently of Chat Lock, while a silent category can suppress sound or other alerts.

In WhatsApp, check Settings > Notifications. Then open iPhone Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp and make sure the alert types you want are enabled. Exact labels and options can differ by iOS version. WhatsApp’s notification guidance states that device settings override its in-app choices.

- Do not unlock a chat just to solve a notification that never arrives; unlocking changes privacy, not push delivery.
- Do not clear chat data or reinstall WhatsApp as a first step. The relevant checks are notification permissions, mute and chat settings, background data, and battery restrictions.
- Do not assume that a generic WhatsApp alert means Chat Lock is malfunctioning. A name-free alert can be the intended privacy result.
Behavior can vary with WhatsApp version, language, operating-system version, device maker, notification category, and system privacy settings. If the menus differ from these paths, look for WhatsApp under your phone’s notification or app settings.
