When the Canadian dollar weakens against the U.S. dollar, a Canadian shopper needs more Canadian dollars to pay the same U.S. price. The exact amount depends on the exchange rate and payment terms used for the transaction; it is separate from whether Canadian retailers change their own prices.
How a weaker Canadian dollar changes a U.S. price
U.S. prices are quoted in U.S. dollars (USD). To estimate the Canadian-dollar (CAD) equivalent, multiply the USD price by the exchange rate quoted as Canadian dollars per U.S. dollar (CAD per USD). When that figure rises, each U.S. dollar costs more Canadian dollars.
For example, suppose an item costs USD 100. At a hypothetical rate of CAD 1.30 per USD, its converted price is CAD 130. At a hypothetical rate of CAD 1.40 per USD, it is CAD 140. That is an arithmetic illustration only—not a current exchange rate or a quote from a payment provider—and it excludes fees.
Why the rate on a reference page may not be your checkout rate
The Bank of Canada describes its posted exchange rates as “indicative rates only,” based on averages of aggregated price quotes from financial institutions. They can help you estimate a conversion, but they do not establish the rate, fee, or final charge for your particular card, bank, or merchant. Check the payment provider’s terms and the amount shown for the transaction.

Why Canadian retail prices do not move in lockstep with the currency
A weaker Canadian dollar can raise the CAD cost of imported finished goods and imported materials used by Canadian businesses. Retail prices do not necessarily rise by the same percentage as the currency move, or at the same time. Businesses may absorb some added costs, and the effect can depend on a product’s import content, demand, pricing decisions, and how long firms expect the currency change to last.
Statistics Canada examined import prices and the Canada–U.S. exchange rate from 2018 through 2022. It noted that their co-movement after the second quarter of 2021 may suggest that currency depreciation passed through to import prices. That observed relationship does not show that exchange-rate changes alone caused every import-price movement.

How exchange rates affect cross-border shopping and Canadian stores
Currency movements can affect Canadian retailers through more than the cost of imports. A stronger Canadian dollar can make U.S. goods cheaper in CAD and encourage cross-border shopping, which may draw sales away from Canadian stores. Lower import costs and pressure from cross-border competition can therefore affect retailers through different channels.
A 2019 Bank of Canada staff working paper estimated that the Canadian dollar’s 57% appreciation from 2002 to 2012 led to a 6.5% reduction in the retail price index. This is a model estimate for that historical period, not a forecast or a rule for what any currency move will do today. The paper’s estimates also found that direct-importing retailers passed lower import costs through to prices, while firms near the U.S. border faced sales pressure linked to cross-border shopping; those findings do not predict the outcome for every retailer.

What makes the Canadian dollar move
The foreign-exchange market determines the Canadian dollar’s value. The Bank of Canada identifies factors such as relative interest rates and inflation, demand for financial assets, and demand for Canadian goods and services as influences.
Any specific explanation for a currency move needs a date. For example, on January 29, 2025, the Bank of Canada said the Canadian dollar had fallen against the U.S. dollar since October 2024, mostly amid rising uncertainty about trade policies, with a modest contribution from a widening policy-interest-rate differential. That explanation describes developments at that time; it should not be treated as an explanation of the exchange rate on another date.

How to compare a U.S. purchase with a Canadian one
A low U.S. sticker price does not by itself establish that buying there will save money. Compare the same product and account for the costs that apply to your situation:
- Convert the U.S. sticker price using the transaction exchange rate, not just a reference rate.
- Add any payment or currency-conversion fees.
- Include shipping, travel, or other costs of getting the item.
- Check that the product, warranty, and return terms are comparable in both countries.
The final comparison depends on those details; an exchange-rate calculation alone cannot determine whether a particular purchase is worthwhile.
