Many small files can take longer to transfer than a few large ones, and a hub, adapter, cable, or incompatible port can limit a device’s functionality. Compare the same kind of transfer on another port or PC before deciding the drive itself needs replacing.
Why USB file copies take different amounts of time
File size and file count both matter
A transfer’s elapsed time depends on the number and size of the files. A folder containing many small files is a different workload from a few large video files, so comparing those transfers does not tell you whether performance has changed. Microsoft notes that transfers to external storage may take time depending on the number and size of files (Microsoft’s external-storage file-transfer guidance).
The connection can limit the device
A drive connected through a hub, dock, adapter, or cable may not be using a suitable connection path. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance identifies unsupported ports, cables, and some hub or dock connections as possible causes of limited device functionality. That guidance concerns USB-C connection problems; it does not establish that every such issue causes slow flash-drive copies (Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance).
A USB version label is not a write-speed promise
USB interface specifications describe a connection, not the sustained write rate of a particular flash drive. Microsoft’s legacy support material lists 480 Mbps as the USB 2.0 high-speed maximum; that is a bus ceiling, not an expected file-copy speed for a specific drive (Microsoft’s USB 2.0 support article).

How to troubleshoot a slow USB copy
- Identify the transfer and workload. Note whether files are going from the PC to the USB drive or from the drive to the PC. Compare like with like: a few large files against a few large files, or many small files against a similarly sized collection. File number and size affect transfer time, so this comparison helps avoid mistaking a different workload for a fault.
- Simplify the connection. If practical, disconnect the drive from a hub, dock, or adapter and connect it directly to a suitable PC port. Check that the port and any cable support the connection the device needs. This is a sensible compatibility check, not a guaranteed speed fix.
- Try another port, then another PC if available. Repeat a comparable transfer. If performance changes with the port or computer, the connection path or PC may be involved. If slow behavior follows the drive, the drive becomes a stronger suspect. This comparison narrows down the issue; it does not by itself prove a specific cause.
- Decide whether the drive is the bottleneck. Consider replacing it only if comparisons point to that drive as the limiting part of the setup. Compare capacity, an interface supported by both the drive and PC, and credible sustained write performance for your workload. Do not choose on the USB version label alone; the interface maximum does not establish real-world write performance.
Settings and fixes to approach with caution
Do not apply a blanket write-caching change or reformat the drive as a universal fix. Microsoft’s write-caching material is Windows 7-era guidance, not a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 recommendation. Reformatting can erase files, and the available guidance does not establish one file system as the right speed fix for every USB drive (Microsoft’s USB and SD storage guidance).
Verify the copy and disconnect safely
After copying, check that the destination contains the files you intended to transfer. Then use Windows’ eject or safely-remove flow and wait until Windows indicates it is safe before unplugging the drive. Microsoft advises safely removing USB flash drives and external hard drives to avoid data loss (Microsoft’s safely-remove guidance).

What to do if Windows warns about storage
If Windows displays a critical storage warning, back up important data and follow Microsoft’s support guidance for that warning (Microsoft’s critical storage warning guidance). Slow copying alone does not prove that the drive is failing.
