If closing a terminal window ends a umux session, the likely issue is the lifetime of the process running umux—not a documented umux setting for keeping sessions alive after a window closes. First check whether the session still exists with umux ls, umux status, and umux logs --tail 100. To keep the process hosting umux running through a terminal disconnection, run it inside a detached tmux session. That is a practical workaround, not a documented umux-specific guarantee.

What closing the “window” may have stopped

Here, “window” most likely means the terminal window from which umux was launched. The umux project README describes a command-line/API tool that creates stateful shell sessions; it does not describe a window-and-pane terminal interface.

Umux preserves shell state between commands in a session, including details such as the working directory and environment. That is different from guaranteeing that the umux process, its shell, or programs running in that shell will survive when the process hosting umux exits. The README does not establish exactly what closing a particular terminal does: the result may depend on the umux version, operating system, and how it was launched.

Check whether the session is still alive

  1. Open a terminal in the same environment and run umux ls to see whether the session is listed.
  2. If it appears, run umux status and inspect recent output with umux logs --tail 100.
  3. If the session is absent, treat its shell as ended unless you can verify otherwise. A log entry alone does not prove that the shell or its programs are still running.

The umux README says waits require a timeout: “All waits require --timeout (or set via UMUX_DEFAULT_TIMEOUT). No infinite hangs.” If a wait seems stuck, check the command’s timeout configuration as well as the session’s status.

Use a detached tmux session to keep the host process running

If closing the terminal also terminates the process that owns umux, keep that process inside a detached tmux session instead. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign NCSA’s tmux guidance describes tmux sessions as remaining resident on the login node after disconnection. The approach depends on the node remaining available: a reboot can still end the tmux session. The reviewed umux documentation does not specify an umux detach option, so tmux is a host-process persistence workaround, not a guaranteed fix for every umux setup.

  1. Start tmux in the environment where you run umux by entering tmux.
  2. Launch umux and its session from a shell inside tmux.
  3. Detach from tmux using Ctrl-b, then d. This leaves the tmux session running while you disconnect from the terminal.
  4. After reconnecting to the same environment, run tmux attach to return to that session.

Know what logs can—and cannot—recover

The umux README documents optional durable JSONL input/output logging through UMUX_LOG_DIR. If that variable was configured, inspect the corresponding log to find the last recorded input and output. By contrast, the README says default history is kept in memory. Neither kind of log is documented as a way to restore a live shell or restart programs that were running in it.

Keep the live host process across a terminal disconnection NCSA documents tmux sessions remaining resident on a login node after disconnection; a node reboot can end them.
Review recorded umux input and output The umux README documents optional JSONL logs with UMUX_LOG_DIR; logs are history, not proof of a live session.
Restore a shell or its running programs from a log Not stated in the umux README.

If tmux reports that its server exited

Do not assume a tmux server error explains an umux failure. Tmux’s FAQ says that messages such as server exited unexpectedly or lost server usually mean the tmux server crashed; a killed server or deleted socket can also account for missing tmux sessions. That diagnosis concerns tmux, not umux, and does not establish why an umux session disappeared.

When the cause is still unclear

If the umux process appears to be alive but its session is missing or inaccessible, collect the umux version, operating system, exact launch command, output from umux ls and umux status, and relevant logs. The umux README and repository do not identify a specific window-close defect, so those details are needed before attributing the loss to a particular bug or failure mode. The repository page also reports that the project was archived on July 6, 2026, and is read-only; the README should not be treated as evidence of ongoing maintenance or as a guarantee for every package version.
