A movie missing from a streaming app may be unavailable in your country, have left after a licensing agreement ended, or be hidden by the active profile’s settings. Check the profile and location first; if the title used to be there, look for a notice that it is leaving. These checks can help distinguish a catalog restriction from a problem with the app itself.

Why a movie may be missing

Streaming rights vary by country

A service does not necessarily have the rights to show every title in every region. Netflix says rights may be held by different studios or distributors, unavailable in a particular region, or exclusive to another streaming platform. Regional popularity can also influence its catalog. Netflix explains why titles differ by country.

A license may have expired

A movie can disappear even if it was previously available. Netflix says titles sometimes leave when licensing agreements end; decisions about renewing a title can depend on whether rights are still available, regional popularity, and licensing cost. If the movie used to appear in the app, check for a notice that it is leaving or has left. Netflix’s explanation of titles leaving the service describes these factors.

Profile settings can filter results

The title may be available on the service but not visible on the profile you are using. Netflix identifies maturity settings, blocked titles, profile language, and VPN use among possible reasons a title may not appear. Its catalog-search guidance can help if a profile language is filtering results. Netflix’s missing-title troubleshooting page lists these checks.

Disney+ also identifies parental controls as a possible reason content may not appear. Its help guidance says availability can depend on the country or region, including when a subscriber travels. Disney+ Help Centre (UK), updated 29 April 2026, covers these cases.

What to check, in order

  1. Confirm the active profile. Check its maturity rating, blocked-title list, or child/J unior mode if the service offers those controls. Restrictions can affect what appears without changing the catalog for other profiles.
  2. Check your current country or region. Catalogs differ by region, and travel can change what is available. If you are away from home, the app may show the catalog for your current location.
  3. Test without a VPN, if you use one. Netflix lists VPN use as a possible reason titles may not appear. Turn it off and check again where appropriate; do not treat a VPN as a way to bypass territorial rights restrictions.
  4. On Netflix, review the profile language. If search results seem limited, use Netflix’s catalog-search guidance to look for titles beyond the language associated with the profile.
  5. If the title was available before, look for a leaving notice. A licensing agreement may have ended, so reinstalling the app or changing devices will not restore rights the service no longer has.
  6. Contact the service if the checks do not explain it. Use that app’s support route for help with an account or app-specific issue.

When it is a catalog issue, not an app fault

If a title is unavailable because of regional rights or an expired license, clearing the cache, reinstalling the app, or buying a different device will not make it available in that catalog. Those steps may be relevant to other app problems, but they do not change which titles a service is licensed to show.

If you want to find another legal way to watch a specific movie, check availability for your country and distinguish subscription streaming from rental or purchase. A title’s presence on a service—and its price—can change, so verify the current listing rather than assuming it is included in a subscription.

What these checks cannot determine

Without the movie title and your country, it is not possible to say which service currently carries it. The Netflix and Disney+ guidance above illustrates common causes; it is not a universal menu-by-menu guide for every streaming app. For a title-specific answer, check the service’s current catalog in your region or ask its support team.
