If a div has a constrained height and overflow: auto or overflow: scroll, its extra content stays inside that separate scroll container. The page screenshot may therefore show only the portion visible in the div, even though the rest can be reached by scrolling it.
Why the overflow div is missing from the screenshot
CSS overflow determines how content that exceeds an element’s box is handled. When a div has a height or maximum height and overflow-y: auto or scroll, the excess content is clipped to the div’s visible area and given its own scroll position. That nested content does not necessarily increase the document’s scroll height.

A Playwright issue opened on March 22, 2022 describes this omission for scrollable content in a non-body element in the reporter’s scenario. The report notes an absolutely positioned div and reproductions in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox for that example; it does not establish that every current browser or Playwright version behaves identically. Confirm which element is scrolling
- Inspect the div in your browser’s developer tools. Check computed
overflow-y,height,max-height,block-size, andmax-block-size. - Scroll the document, then scroll inside the div. If the div moves independently while the document remains in place, it is a nested scroll container.
- Compare its dimensions and scroll position in the console:

Replace.your-panelwith the actual selector. A panel withscrollHeight > clientHeighthas content beyond its visible box. ChangescrollTopor scroll the panel to confirm that the omitted material appears. - If the visible wrapper is not the scroller, inspect the rendered DOM further. The relevant element may be inside an iframe or Shadow DOM.
Omitted pixels do not prove that the content is absent. It may still exist in the DOM but be outside the visible portion of the nested scroll area.
Choose a capture method for the content
Static panel: expand it temporarily
If all the content is already present and stable, apply a capture-only style override to remove the panel’s height constraint and clipping. For example:

}Apply the rule to the correct element before taking the screenshot, wait for layout to settle, and inspect the result. Expanding the panel can reflow the page, change sticky or fixed positioning, and produce an image that differs from the user’s normal view. Restore the original styles afterward, or use a fresh page for the capture.
Panel-only image: target the element, but handle overflow separately
An element screenshot can be appropriate when you need just the panel rather than the whole document. Do not assume that targeting an element automatically includes its clipped, scrollable overflow: the element’s rendered bounds and its hidden scroll extent are different things. If you need all inner content, combine element targeting with a suitable expansion or scrolling workflow.

Dynamic or virtualized panel: scroll, wait, capture, stitch
If rows, images, or other content load as you scroll, or a virtualized list renders only nearby items, capture the panel in sections. Scroll its own scroll position in deliberate increments, wait for the relevant content to render at each position, and capture overlapping sections so sticky headers or variable-height items do not leave gaps. Stitch the images and verify row continuity.
Virtualized interfaces may recycle DOM nodes, so increasing the panel height alone may not reveal the entire logical list. This workflow requires site-specific implementation and verification; a seamless result is not guaranteed without testing the page.

Change the layout only when the page should scroll instead
If the intended behavior is for the entire document to scroll, reconsider the fixed height or overflow rule so the content contributes to document height. Nested scrolling may be intentional, especially in constrained interfaces, so changing it can affect usability on smaller screens.
Common causes and fixes

Reliability and fidelity checks
- Wait for images, fonts, and newly rendered rows before capturing each section.
- Check for lazy loading, virtualization, animation, sticky headers, and fixed-position elements before choosing a method.
- Use overlap between stitched captures, then inspect transitions for missing, repeated, or obscured content.
- If the screenshot must represent the UI as a user sees it, avoid changing its layout and scroll the panel instead.
- Keep the original CSS and page state available so temporary capture changes can be undone.
