A laptop can be advertised with a 4K display and a 120Hz capability yet show only 60Hz in Windows. The reason is that resolution and refresh rate are a single supported display mode: the laptop panel, graphics path, port, monitor input, cable, adapter and dock must all support 3840×2160 at 120Hz at the same time. Check the exact model and connection, then use Windows’ display-specific mode list to see what the system actually supports.

What “4K at 120Hz” actually requires

For this guide, 4K means the common 3840×2160 format. A specification that lists “4K” may describe maximum resolution, while “120Hz” may describe the maximum refresh rate at a lower resolution. Those two figures do not prove that 3840×2160 at 120Hz is available on your particular laptop or monitor.

Refresh rate is negotiated as a complete mode. The graphics hardware must generate the resolution and timing, the display panel or monitor input must accept it, and every link between them must carry the required signal. If any component tops out at 4K/60, Windows normally removes 4K/120 from the selectable list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Marketing language can also refer to different screens. A laptop may have a 120Hz internal panel while an external HDMI output is limited to 60Hz, or an external monitor may support 4K/120 while the laptop’s built-in panel cannot. Treat the exact laptop model, display model and port combination as the specification that matters.

“Up to 120Hz” is not the same as a guaranteed 120Hz at every resolution. Manufacturers may list the highest refresh rate available at 1080p or 1440p, then separately list a maximum resolution of 4K. Look for a timing table or a sentence that explicitly combines the two values. If the documentation lists several inputs, check the individual input rather than assuming all sockets have identical bandwidth.

First determine which screen is limited

Identify whether the problem affects the built-in laptop panel or an external monitor. The diagnostic path is different.

Built-in laptop panel

For the internal screen, the relevant limits are the panel fitted to that exact laptop configuration, the laptop’s graphics design, supported drivers and manufacturer firmware or graphics settings. An HDMI cable cannot increase the refresh rate of an internal panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two laptops with the same product-family name can ship with different panel options. Check the complete model or configuration identifier, not just the marketing series. If the manufacturer’s specification identifies the internal panel as 4K/60, a software setting cannot convert it to 4K/120. A 120Hz option may still appear at a lower resolution on some systems, but that is a different mode.

External monitor

An external display adds the monitor input, laptop output, cable, adapter, dock or KVM, and any other device in the chain. A 4K/120 monitor can still run at 60Hz when one of those links is restricted. Record the monitor model and the exact input socket in use before changing anything.

Do not use an external-monitor cable as a proposed fix for a built-in-panel limitation. Conversely, do not conclude that the laptop panel is defective until you have tested the external path directly and confirmed the monitor’s input requirements.

Check the refresh-rate modes Windows offers

Windows lists modes for the display and connection that are active at that moment. Use that list as a capability check rather than assuming a hidden setting will unlock 120Hz.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. If more than one screen is connected, select the affected display.
  3. Open Advanced display.
  4. Review the current resolution and the refresh-rate choices.
  5. If 120Hz appears beside the desired resolution, select it and apply the change.

A rate marked with an asterisk does not support the current resolution. Choosing that entry changes the resolution to obtain the selected refresh rate. It is therefore not evidence that 4K/120 is available; verify the resolution shown after the change.

If 120Hz is absent, Windows is not currently being offered that mode. Check the model specifications and connection path before trying registry edits or third-party utilities. Software cannot create a mode that the panel, GPU output or link does not support.

When several monitors are attached, Advanced display applies to the screen you selected. It is easy to change the refresh rate of the wrong display and assume the setting failed. Select each screen in turn, record its resolution and available rates, and test the target display by itself if the list looks unexpectedly short.

Verify the exact simultaneous specification

Look up the complete laptop model number in the manufacturer’s specifications and support pages. For an external display, check the monitor’s manual for the particular input being used. You need an explicit or clearly supported combination of 3840×2160 and 120Hz, not two unrelated maximum figures.

Item to verify Why it matters
Laptop internal panel Determines whether the built-in screen itself can display 3840×2160 at 120Hz.
Laptop GPU and output Determines which resolutions and refresh rates can be sent through each physical output.
Monitor input A monitor may accept 4K/120 on one input but offer fewer modes on another.
USB-C, USB4 or Thunderbolt port The connector shape does not by itself prove that video output or DisplayPort Alternate Mode is supported.
Cable and adapter Both must be rated for the target signal; a lower-rated component can make Windows offer only 60Hz.
Dock, hub or KVM Its bandwidth and simultaneous-display limits can reduce the available mode.

MSI advises checking the maximum refresh rate supported by the specific laptop model when the available rate is lower than expected. That model-level check is more reliable than a product family name or a retailer headline.

Read the specification as a chain, not a checklist of independent numbers. For example, “4K output” can mean 4K at 60Hz, while “120Hz external display” can refer to a lower resolution. The useful confirmation is wording such as 3840×2160 at 120Hz for the named port, with the named cable or dock conditions if any are listed.

For an external monitor, simplify the entire connection

Every component in the video path participates in the limit. Test the simplest supported arrangement before replacing hardware at random.

Connect directly

  1. Disconnect the dock, hub, KVM switch and video adapter temporarily.
  2. Connect the monitor directly to a documented video output on the laptop.
  3. Select the matching input on the monitor’s on-screen menu.
  4. Return to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and check whether 3840×2160 at 120Hz is listed.

If direct connection exposes 120Hz, the bypassed dock, adapter or cable is the limiting component. Consult its specifications for the required resolution, refresh rate and number of simultaneous displays. HP support documentation includes model-specific examples in which a 4K/120 combination is limited through a particular dock connection and port; that is why dock behavior must be checked against the exact notebook and dock, not generalized to every laptop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test one change at a time. First bypass the dock, then try a known-supported cable, then test another documented output. If you replace several parts at once, you will not know which component resolved the problem. Keep notes of the mode list after each test.

Confirm USB-C video capability

USB-C is a connector format, not a guarantee of video. The laptop port must support DisplayPort Alternate Mode or the applicable USB4/Thunderbolt video feature, and the dock, adapter and monitor must support the same signal. Microsoft notes that limited USB-C display functionality can result from the PC, display, cable, port or dock lacking the necessary support.

Try another USB-C port only when the laptop documentation identifies it as video-capable. A charge-only or data-only port will not produce a 4K/120 signal regardless of cable quality. Also check whether a USB-C dock shares bandwidth with USB devices or other displays; its advertised maximum may apply only when it is the sole display.

Check HDMI capabilities and cable rating

For an HDMI connection, verify the HDMI version or explicitly listed 4K/120 support for both the laptop output and monitor input. ASUS recommends a certified Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable according to the target video mode, identifying Ultra High Speed for HDMI 4K/120 use. A certified cable is useful only when both endpoints support the mode; it cannot overcome a 4K/60 port or a panel limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cable labels alone are not proof that the laptop output supports 4K/120. A certified Ultra High Speed cable can carry the signal when the endpoints are compatible, but buying one does not upgrade an HDMI output, adapter or dock. Confirm the input selected on the monitor as well; a different socket may have a different maximum mode.

Remove other displays while testing

Docks and graphics hardware may divide available bandwidth among several screens. Disconnect other monitors during the test, establish the target display at 4K/120, and then reconnect the remaining screens one at a time. If 120Hz disappears only after another display is added, the dock or GPU’s simultaneous-output limit is the likely constraint.

Understand graphics routing on hybrid-graphics laptops

Laptops with integrated and discrete graphics do not necessarily wire every output to the same GPU. NVIDIA’s Optimus explanation gives a common example: the internal LCD is connected to Intel integrated graphics, while HDMI is often connected to NVIDIA graphics. That arrangement varies by model, so it should not be treated as a universal wiring rule.

Port-specific routing can explain why an external monitor offers 120Hz while the internal panel does not, or why one external port exposes more modes than another. Consult the laptop manual for the actual wiring and supported modes. If the manufacturer provides a graphics-mode utility or BIOS option, use only settings documented for that model; changing a generic “discrete GPU” or “hybrid” option is not guaranteed to add a display mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Graphics routing is also a reason not to infer behavior from another laptop with the same GPU. The physical port wiring, panel connection and firmware policy can differ. Compare the exact notebook documentation and test the port that the manufacturer identifies for the desired mode.

Use Dynamic Refresh Rate only when the hardware already qualifies

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can vary refresh behavior on compatible displays to balance responsiveness and battery use. Microsoft states that DRR requires variable-refresh-rate (VRR) support and a display refresh rate of at least 120Hz. Windows 10 does not include DRR.

DRR is not an unlock for a missing mode. If Advanced display does not list 120Hz at the required resolution, enabling or disabling DRR will not create it. When 120Hz is available but the system changes rates during battery use, inspect the DRR setting and the laptop’s power profile after confirming the basic mode works.

Think of DRR as a policy that can vary an already supported range, not as a new output standard. It cannot compensate for a 4K/60 panel, a 4K/60 dock or an input that lacks 4K/120 bandwidth. On Windows 10, skip DRR troubleshooting entirely and focus on the physical mode and connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A complete troubleshooting sequence

  1. Identify the screen. Decide whether the affected display is the internal panel or an external monitor.
  2. Record the current mode. In Advanced display, note the selected resolution and every refresh-rate entry, including entries marked with an asterisk.
  3. Test the intended combination. Look specifically for 3840×2160 at 120Hz, rather than selecting 120Hz at an unspecified resolution.
  4. Check model documentation. Use the full laptop model number and the exact monitor model and input. Confirm that the simultaneous mode is supported.
  5. Simplify external connections. Bypass docks, hubs, KVMs and adapters, then test a direct, documented video output.
  6. Validate the port. For USB-C, confirm DisplayPort Alternate Mode or USB4/Thunderbolt video support. For HDMI, confirm 4K/120 support on both endpoints.
  7. Validate the cable. Use a cable rated for the required signal; for HDMI 4K/120, ASUS identifies certified Ultra High Speed HDMI as the appropriate class.
  8. Check graphics routing. Compare the port used with the laptop manual’s integrated/discrete-GPU wiring and any model-specific graphics configuration.
  9. Retest with other displays disconnected. Reconnect additional monitors only after the target display works at its intended mode.
  10. Consider DRR last. On Windows 11, use DRR only if the display already supports at least 120Hz and VRR. It is unavailable on Windows 10.

At each stage, return to Advanced display and record the exact resolution-rate pair. This prevents a false success in which Windows reports 120Hz only because it silently switched to a lower resolution. It also gives support a reproducible timeline showing which connection change affected the available modes.

Symptoms, likely causes and the next check

What you see Most useful next check
120Hz is missing entirely Confirm the exact panel or monitor specification and inspect the complete port-to-display path.
120Hz appears only at a lower resolution Check whether the laptop output, monitor input, cable or adapter supports 3840×2160 at 120Hz simultaneously.
120Hz works when connected directly but not through a dock Check the dock’s bandwidth, port assignment and simultaneous-display limits for the exact laptop model.
One USB-C port works and another does not Verify which port supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode or USB4/Thunderbolt video; connector shape alone is insufficient.
External display is limited but the built-in panel is fast Check external-port GPU wiring and the monitor input specification rather than the internal panel specification.
120Hz disappears after another monitor is connected Test without the second display and review the GPU or dock’s multi-display bandwidth limits.

If the available list changes after reconnecting a cable or waking the laptop, first reselect the intended display and verify its current resolution. Windows is reporting the mode negotiated for that connection at that time; it is not a permanent promise that every port or dock arrangement can provide the same list.

When 120Hz cannot be enabled

Some limitations are physical. If the internal panel is a 4K/60 part, no Windows setting can turn it into a 4K/120 panel. Likewise, a laptop output, monitor input, dock or adapter that is limited to 4K/60 cannot deliver 4K/120 merely because another component is rated for it.

In those cases, choose a supported trade-off: keep 4K and use 60Hz, or lower the resolution if the hardware documentation confirms a higher refresh rate at that resolution. Make the choice from the modes Windows actually lists and the manufacturer’s specifications, not from an unverified custom timing.

A lower-resolution 120Hz mode can be a useful diagnostic clue, but it does not prove that a component is faulty. It usually means the path can carry the higher refresh only at a reduced pixel rate. Keep the mode if it meets your needs, or replace the specifically limiting component with one documented for 4K/120; do not assume that replacing only the cable will solve a port or dock ceiling.

What to provide when contacting support

If the correct mode remains unavailable after a direct-connection test, give the laptop or monitor manufacturer enough detail to reproduce the configuration:

  • Complete laptop model and configuration identifier.
  • Monitor model, input socket and selected input.
  • Current resolution and the full refresh-rate list shown in Advanced display.
  • Port used on the laptop and monitor.
  • Cable, adapter, dock or KVM make and model.
  • Whether a direct connection changes the available modes.
  • Whether other displays are connected.

Ask support to confirm explicitly whether that laptop port and monitor input combination supports 3840×2160 at 120Hz. Microsoft’s general external-monitor guidance can help verify physical connections and display selection, but only the manufacturer can confirm a model-specific maximum mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my 4K 120Hz laptop screen stuck at 60Hz?

Usually, 4K/120 is not a supported simultaneous mode for the exact panel, port or connection. Check Advanced display, then verify the complete laptop specification rather than the separate maximum-resolution and maximum-refresh figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I set my laptop display to 120Hz?

Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the intended screen, and choose 120Hz if it appears beside the desired resolution. If it is absent, Windows is not being offered that mode through the current hardware path.

Can an HDMI cable make my laptop’s internal screen run at 120Hz?

No. A cable affects an external connection only. The built-in panel’s capability is fixed by the panel and laptop design.

Does every USB-C port support 4K/120 video?

No. USB-C describes the connector shape. The specific port must support DisplayPort Alternate Mode or the applicable USB4/Thunderbolt video feature, and the cable, adapter, dock and monitor must support the same mode.

Will Dynamic Refresh Rate unlock 4K at 120Hz?

No. Windows 11 DRR requires VRR support and a display capable of at least 120Hz, but it does not add a mode missing from Advanced display. Windows 10 does not include DRR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does 120Hz work directly but not through my dock?

The dock, its port assignment, shared bandwidth or simultaneous-display limit may restrict the signal. Compare the dock and notebook documentation, and test the monitor directly to a documented laptop output.

Is an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable enough for 4K/120?

It is the appropriate certified cable class for HDMI 4K/120 according to ASUS, but both the laptop HDMI output and monitor HDMI input must also support the mode. A cable cannot upgrade a 4K/60 endpoint.

What information should I send support?

Provide the full laptop and monitor models, selected input, resolution and complete refresh-rate list, laptop and monitor ports, cable or dock models, whether other displays are attached, and whether direct connection changes the available modes.

The Bottom Line

120Hz appears only when the complete system supports 3840×2160 at 120Hz. Verify the mode in Advanced display, then isolate the panel, port, cable, adapter and dock until the limiting component is identified.
