Private 5G is a dedicated cellular network controlled by one organization. It is sold through equipment vendors, enterprise-network specialists, carriers, cloud marketplaces, systems integrators, and managed-service providers. A purchase can include radios, a cellular core, SIM provisioning, edge software, orchestration, installation, integration, support, and ongoing operations—but no two offers necessarily bundle the same pieces. Start by deciding who will operate the network and what your supplier is responsible for, then compare the technology and commercial terms.
Who sells private 5G?
Private 5G is a multi-part system, so the company whose name is on a proposal may not supply every component or perform every task. Ericsson says deployments usually involve multiple vendors, potentially including operators, device providers, resellers, and private-network vendors. Its described deployment stages include planning and design, installation, IT/OT integration and validation, and optimization (Ericsson Private Networks).

What does a private 5G network include?
Ask for a component-and-responsibility list, not just a product name or “turnkey” label. A proposal may bundle several of the following while leaving other elements to the customer or a partner.

#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Radio access: Indoor or outdoor access points or small cells, antennas, mounting and power accessories, and any required band-specific approvals.
- Core and control: Cellular core functions for subscriber authentication, policy, and traffic handling. Confirm whether the core runs on site, at a provider location, or in the cloud.
- Device onboarding: Physical SIMs or eSIM provisioning, device certification, and lifecycle management.
- Edge compute: Local computing for applications that need processing near the site. Establish the hardware, software, hosting, redundancy, and support arrangements.
- Orchestration and management: Tools for provisioning, monitoring, configuration, policy, and potentially multiple sites.
- Integration and security: Connections to the existing LAN/WAN, identity and access controls, IT/OT segmentation, application integration, and incident responsibilities.
- Deployment and operations: Site survey and design, installation, testing, optimization, documentation, training, managed operations, and service levels.
Celona’s subscription description lists access points and accessories, SIM cards, Edge Software, Orchestrator, and express support; it says the Edge Appliance and external antennas are separate purchases (Celona subscription components). Its portable Airkit is a different, bundled evaluation package that its documentation describes with an access point, edge device, SIM cards, orchestration, and a three-year subscription (Celona Airkit). These are specific examples, not a guarantee that a general private 5G quote includes all hardware.
Cisco describes its offer as a service intended to reduce heavy upfront investment, but also mentions on-premises 5G radio access points and implementation. “As a service” describes a commercial or operating model; it does not by itself mean that equipment, installation, or site work disappears (Cisco private 5G service).
Is private 5G a managed service or equipment I operate?
It can be either, or a shared-responsibility arrangement. The radio and core technology do not answer who monitors faults, changes policy, provisions devices, applies updates, or responds to incidents. Before comparing bids, assign an owner to each operational task.

- Enterprise-operated: The organization takes responsibility for day-to-day network administration and needs appropriate staff, processes, and supplier support.
- Vendor-, carrier-, or integrator-managed: A provider takes on some operating work under a service arrangement. Define its boundaries, escalation path, coverage hours, and service-level commitments.
- Shared operation: The enterprise and one or more suppliers divide responsibilities. Record who owns each layer, from radio and core to IT/OT connections and application incidents.
Ericsson’s deployment description is a reminder that a network supplier, operator, device provider, reseller, and integrator can all have roles. Ask which legal entity is accountable for the end-to-end outcome and where one supplier’s responsibility stops (Ericsson Private Networks).
Do I need my own spectrum?
Not necessarily, but the network needs a lawful spectrum arrangement for its location. Private deployments can use shared, unlicensed, or licensed spectrum; an operator may also lease licensed spectrum to an enterprise or another party, according to Ericsson. In the United States, CBRS is one shared-spectrum path. Samsung describes CBRS as the U.S. 3.5–3.7 GHz band (Ericsson spectrum overview; Samsung CBRS).
Do not assume a spectrum route or radio variant will work in another country. Confirm local authorization, supported bands, radio certification, and device compatibility early. Nokia’s September 2022 announcement described a fieldrouter and dongle for North American private wireless applications including CBRS, and a portfolio spanning private 4.9G/LTE and 5G; that announcement does not establish current stock or compatibility with every network design (Nokia fieldrouter announcement).

How to compare private 5G proposals
Compare the scope, operating model, and fit for your use case—not just headline radio claims. Private 5G vendors target settings such as industrial operations, logistics, asset tracking, robotics, campuses, energy, and mining. Requirements differ by site and application, so compare against existing Wi-Fi and public cellular service as well as against other private-network proposals (Cisco; AWS).
- Set the operating model: Decide whether your team, a provider, or both will run the network. Name who handles incidents, configuration changes, updates, and end-to-end service accountability.
- Draw the bundle boundary: List radios, core, edge, SIM/eSIM, management, security, installation, and support as included, separately priced, or customer-provided. Identify where each component is hosted.
- Request complete costs: Compare capital purchases and subscriptions, contract term and renewal, charging basis, implementation, edge and cloud fees, support, and exit or data arrangements. Ask for a multi-year cost schedule rather than relying on a low-upfront-cost description.
- Validate spectrum and devices: Confirm the legal spectrum route for each site, radio band and certification, and compatibility of the intended endpoints and SIM/eSIM approach.
- Test application and site fit: Specify coverage, mobility, throughput and latency needs, device count and types, and application or OT integrations. Have suppliers explain how they will validate the proposed design at the site.
- Allocate lifecycle responsibilities: Put identity, authentication, segmentation, patching, monitoring, fault response, spares, warranty, and ongoing support into the responsibility matrix and contract.
What the available deployment figures do—and don’t—show
Nokia’s July 21, 2020 announcement said its enterprise customers had deployed over 1,300 industrial networks worldwide. That is a historical company-reported figure from that announcement, not a current count, independently audited statistic, or market-wide total (Nokia announcement, 2020). It should not be used to rank vendors or infer current market share.
