There is no universal list of safe apps to turn off: what belongs on your laptop depends on what you use. In Windows 10 and 11, review entries in Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, check their startup impact, and disable only those you can identify and do not need. Startup apps can slow boot and add background activity, but they are only one possible cause of a slow laptop.
Which apps are reasonable to disable?
Start with apps you recognize that you rarely use immediately after signing in. If you do not need an app to open automatically, disabling its startup entry can reduce what launches at sign-in. You can still open the app yourself later.
Do not treat a high-impact label as proof that an app is unnecessary. Impact describes startup resource use; it does not tell you whether you rely on the app or whether it is safe to turn off. Keep anything you need available at sign-in, and confirm an unfamiliar entry’s purpose before changing it.
How to review and disable startup apps
Use Task Manager for impact details
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Review the app names and the Startup impact column. Prioritize entries you recognize and do not need at sign-in.
- Right-click an app you have decided not to start automatically and select Disable.
Microsoft says, “The Task Manager provides a more detailed view, including the impact each app has on the startup process.” Microsoft’s startup-app guide explains the categories and controls.

Use Windows Settings for a simple toggle
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup, then switch off the toggle for an app you do not want to start automatically. Settings is a straightforward option; Task Manager is useful when you want to see the impact category alongside the entries.
If the app does not appear in either list
The Settings and Task Manager views cover registered startup tasks. Microsoft also documents configuring startup shortcuts through File Explorer for apps that are not listed. Use that approach only when you know which app you are managing and why it should start automatically. Microsoft’s guide to configuring startup applications describes the File Explorer option.

What Task Manager’s impact labels mean
Microsoft defines the categories using CPU and disk use during startup. These figures describe the category criteria; they are not estimates of how many seconds you will save on your own laptop.

Why disabling startup apps may not fix a slow laptop
Microsoft notes that apps running at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage. That makes selective startup management useful, but a slow laptop can have other causes, including limited storage, outdated software, or hardware limitations. Microsoft cautions that older hardware may not improve significantly from its suggested performance steps. See Tips to improve PC performance in Windows for other measures to consider.
When to use a clean boot instead
A clean boot is for investigating a possible software conflict, not for routine trimming of startup apps. Microsoft’s procedure temporarily disables non-Microsoft services and enabled startup items so you can re-enable them systematically and isolate a cause.
