To make Windows 11 feel less crowded, change the setting for the part of the screen that is actually busy: hide desktop icons, remove optional taskbar items, reduce system tray icons, or auto-hide the taskbar. If the problem is too many open windows, use multiple desktops instead. These changes organize or hide interface elements; hiding an icon does not delete its file or shortcut.
Choose the setting that matches the clutter

Hide desktop icons without deleting them
If the wallpaper is covered with shortcuts or files, right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, then clear Show desktop icons. To show them again, repeat those steps and select the option. Microsoft also explains this desktop control in its Windows desktop icon guidance.
Hiding icons is a visual change, not a cleanup or deletion. You can still reach the desktop contents in File Explorer by selecting Desktop in the navigation pane. If the icons are merely too large, hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel while the pointer is over the desktop to resize them.
Simplify the taskbar
Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. You can also right-click an empty part of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings. Under Taskbar items, adjust the Search display or switch off Task view and Widgets if you do not use them. Microsoft’s taskbar customization guide covers these controls.

To remove an app shortcut, right-click its pinned taskbar icon and choose Unpin from taskbar. Unpinning does not uninstall the app; it only removes the shortcut from the bar. Keep the apps you reach for often pinned, since removing them trades a little space for extra navigation when you want to open them.
Reduce system tray icons carefully
In Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, review System tray icons and Other system tray icons. The first area includes controls such as Pen menu, Touch keyboard, and Virtual touchpad; the other area manages additional app icons and the overflow menu. Depending on the icon, you can change whether it is visible or drag it between the visible tray and overflow area. Microsoft describes the controls in its Windows focus and taskbar guidance.

Change only icons you recognize and do not need to monitor. The tray can show system functions and dynamic privacy indicators, so hiding every unfamiliar icon may conceal useful status information.
Get more screen space with taskbar auto-hide
In Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, expand Taskbar behaviors and enable Automatically hide the taskbar. The bar disappears when you are not using it and returns when you move the pointer to or touch the bottom edge of the screen. This is the most direct option when preserving visible workspace matters more than keeping taskbar buttons on screen. The same Microsoft guidance describes the behavior.

Adjust taskbar alignment and visual alerts
Under Taskbar behaviors, Windows 11 offers Center or Left alignment. Microsoft’s current taskbar guidance describes the taskbar at the bottom of the screen; it does not provide a built-in setting to move it to the top or a side.
If badges or flashing app buttons make the bar feel busy, review the taskbar behavior controls for options to turn them off. These cues can draw attention to app activity, so disable them only if you are comfortable checking those apps yourself.

Make Start and multiple desktops easier to use
Customize the Start menu
Microsoft’s Start menu guidance covers menu customization and the folders shown beside the Power button. Start’s horizontal position follows taskbar alignment. Available controls can vary, so use the labels shown in your current Windows Settings rather than relying on a specific layout toggle.
Separate open windows into desktops
For a crowded set of open apps, press Windows key + Tab to open Task View, then use its desktop controls to create and manage separate desktops. You can also change whether the taskbar shows windows from all desktops or only the current desktop in Taskbar settings. Removing the Task View button from the taskbar does not remove the keyboard shortcut. Microsoft explains the feature in its multiple desktops guide.

Multiple desktops separate open work, such as a project and personal browsing, but they do not move or hide files and shortcuts on the main desktop. For an overview of Widgets, see Microsoft’s Widgets guidance.
