For a clearer video call, improve the light on your face first, then make small exposure or white-balance adjustments if your webcam software allows them. Check focus and framing, review the calling app’s video settings, and investigate network or computer performance if the camera preview looks clear but the video other people receive does not.

1. Improve the lighting before changing camera controls

Place a soft light in front of you, ideally near eye level. A bright window or lamp behind you can leave your face in shadow. Logitech recommends improving lighting conditions to improve webcam image quality.

If the picture looks dark, try room lighting before raising exposure. Increasing exposure in a dim room can make the image noisier rather than clearer. Daylight or a lamp you already own may be enough; a desk light for video calls is an optional fix if your room has no suitable front lighting.

2. Adjust exposure in small steps

Exposure controls how bright the camera makes the image. If your face is underexposed and the lighting is already reasonable, raise exposure slightly in your webcam’s companion software or your operating system’s camera controls. Logitech identifies exposure as a configurable setting and suggests a small increase when external lighting is not being used.

Logitech C270 720p Webcam Plug-and-Play Wide Screen Video Calling - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Check the result after each change. If bright areas lose detail or your face looks washed out, lower exposure again. The name and availability of the control vary by camera and software.

3. Correct visibly wrong color with white balance

White balance affects how the camera renders color. If your skin or neutral objects look noticeably yellow, blue, or green, try automatic white balance first. If the color still looks wrong and your camera provides manual control, adjust it gradually while watching the preview.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

Not every webcam exposes a manual white-balance control. Logitech documents white balance as an adjustable setting, but the available controls depend on the camera and its software.

4. Check focus, lens cleanliness, and framing

  • Clean the lens: Smudges can soften the picture even when the camera is in focus.
  • Hold a steady distance: Sit at a stable distance from the camera and give autofocus a moment to settle.
  • Check focus behavior: Autofocus is automatic on cameras that support it; a manual focus slider is not available on every webcam.
  • Set a comfortable frame: If the software offers zoom or framing controls, make your face clearly visible without an unnecessarily tight crop.

Logitech documents zoom and focus controls, but options vary by camera. If autofocus keeps hunting, try sitting still and removing objects that move close to the lens.

Microsoft Teams

Teams offers a brightness adjustment and a soft-focus effect. These can help with the appearance of the video, but they do not replace adequate lighting or correct a weak connection.

6. Diagnose poor video that others see

If your local camera preview looks clear but other people see choppy or degraded video, the problem may be the call rather than the camera’s image settings. Google Meet’s troubleshooting guidance includes network performance as a quality diagnostic. Microsoft Teams exposes call-health information such as sent frame rate; Microsoft notes that a low frame rate can result from computer performance or insufficient hardware resources.

  • Compare the camera preview with what participants report seeing.
  • Check the calling app’s connection or call-health indicators, including sent frame rate where available.
  • Close resource-heavy apps if the computer appears overloaded, and check the network if the call itself is unstable.

A higher advertised camera resolution alone does not guarantee a clearer call: the app’s resolution settings, network conditions, lighting, and computer performance all affect the result. Consider replacing a webcam only after checking these factors and confirming that your current camera lacks useful controls or remains inadequate in your actual lighting.
