Tavily is the clearest fit when an agent needs search plus extraction, crawling, or mapping; Brave is worth evaluating when an independent search index and structured results are the priority. The old Bing Search APIs have retired, and Google Custom Search JSON API is closed to new customers, so neither is a straightforward new-project choice.
Choose by what your agent must deliver after a search—not by vendor feature claims alone. Test the remaining options on your own queries and compare answer quality and total workflow cost.
Which of these APIs can you use for a new project?
The four names are not four equally available standalone APIs. Microsoft retired Bing Search APIs on August 11, 2025. Google says its Custom Search JSON API is closed to new customers, with existing customers required to transition by January 1, 2027. Tavily and Brave currently offer active search APIs; check their current terms before committing.
| Service | Status as of October 4, 2026 | What it offers or costs |
|---|---|---|
| Tavily | Active API product. | Pay-as-you-go is listed at $0.008 per credit, with 1,000 free API credits per month. Credit use varies by request type and complexity; a credit is not necessarily one search or one completed agent answer. Tavily pricing |
| Brave Search API | Active API product. | The Search plan lists $5 per 1,000 requests, $5 in monthly credits, and capacity of 50 requests per second. These figures apply to the Search plan, not Brave’s separately metered Answers plan. Brave pricing |
| Google Custom Search JSON API | Closed to new customers. Existing customers must transition by January 1, 2027. | For existing customers, Google lists 100 free queries per day, then $5 per 1,000 additional queries, capped at 10,000 queries per day, until discontinuation. Google API overview |
| Bing Search APIs | Retired August 11, 2025; new signup is unavailable. | A current standalone API price is not stated in Microsoft’s retirement notice. Google’s documentation describes Vertex AI Search as an alternative for up to 50 domains; it does not present that product as a general full-web replacement. If a new build depends on open-web search, do not treat it as a like-for-like successor without checking that domain limit against your use case. Google API overview

How do Tavily and Brave differ for agent research?
Tavily: a more integrated retrieval workflow
Tavily groups search, extract, research, crawl, and map endpoints. Its Search API describes reranked, information-rich snippets and exposes controls for search depth, result count, dates, included or excluded domains, country, and language. Optional response fields include an answer and raw content. This breadth makes Tavily the clearest candidate when the agent must move from finding pages toward collecting and organizing their content, rather than stopping at a list of results. Budget using the actual endpoints and request patterns you expect to run: Tavily’s credit consumption varies by request type and complexity, so the listed per-credit rate alone cannot tell you the cost of a completed research task. Tavily pricing
Brave: an independent index and structured results
Brave says its Search API is powered by its own independent web index rather than simply reselling Google or Bing results. Its API offers web URLs and text, as well as news, image, video, and model-oriented context results. That makes it a plausible fit when index independence and structured search results matter to your application. Brave Search API
Search results are not the same as full page text. Brave’s vendor-authored comparison says its API returns structured snippets rather than raw page content, so an agent that needs full pages may require an additional fetch or extraction stage. The comparison also makes claims about Brave’s index size and speed; those are Brave’s claims, not an independent head-to-head benchmark. Brave’s comparison

Google and Bing: migration cases, not equal new-build choices
Google’s API can remain relevant to an existing customer planning a transition, but its new-customer closure and January 1, 2027 transition deadline rule it out as a normal starting point for a new project. Microsoft’s retirement notice says the old Bing Search APIs were retired; Grounding with Bing Search is part of an Azure AI Agents offering, not continued availability of the former standalone APIs. Which one should you choose?
- Choose Tavily for evaluation if your agent needs an integrated path across searching, extracting, crawling, or mapping, or if its search controls fit your workload.
- Evaluate Brave if you want search results from an independent index and can use structured snippets—or are prepared to add a separate page-fetch or extraction step.
- Keep Google Custom Search JSON API only in a migration plan if you are an existing customer; it is closed to new customers and has a stated transition deadline.
- Do not shortlist the retired Bing Search APIs for a new integration. Assess Microsoft’s Azure AI Agents grounding offering as a separate product choice if you want to stay in that ecosystem.
These are fit-based recommendations, not a quality ranking. The reviewed vendor materials do not provide a shared query set and neutral method for comparing relevance, factuality, latency, or completed-agent cost across the four options.

How to run a useful search API comparison
Test the same representative queries against each eligible candidate, including queries from the languages, regions, and subject areas your agent actually handles. Judge the complete research task, not just the first search response.
- Define the required output. Decide whether the model needs URLs and ranked snippets, full page text, a synthesized answer, or a crawl across known sites.
- Build a representative query set. Include time-sensitive questions, obscure topics, geography- or language-specific searches, and queries where source quality matters. Use the same inputs for every candidate.
- Score the returned evidence. Check relevant-source recall, source quality, freshness, citation URLs, content depth, and how well domain and date controls work. Record failures on obscure queries, not only the obvious successes.
- Measure the full workflow under load. Test latency at expected concurrency, rate limits, retries, and failure handling. Include page-fetching, extraction, reranking, and model tokens where the agent needs them.
- Calculate cost per accepted answer. Use actual endpoint use and retries rather than equating a credit, request, or free allowance with a completed task. Compare results under the same acceptance criteria.
- Review data and content terms. Check each provider’s current privacy, logging, retention, permitted storage, and training terms. Brave says storage requires a plan with storage rights and that API access does not grant rights to third-party webpage content; do not infer broader rights from being able to retrieve a result. Brave’s comparison
How to compare the listed prices fairly
The headline rates use different meters: Tavily charges by credits whose use varies by request, while Brave’s cited rate is per Search request. Google’s figures apply only to existing customers during its transition period, and the old Bing Search APIs are retired. These numbers cannot be compared as if they were prices for an equivalent completed research task.
Best Value
For each candidate, estimate the cost of the same accepted answer: search calls, any extraction or page fetches, retries, and model work. Include monthly credits or free daily queries only if your expected usage can actually use them, and verify current plan limits and terms directly before purchase.
