For the most practical way to play the first six Core Design adventures today, start with Tomb Raider I-III Remastered and continue with Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered. The collections include the original games with selectable classic-style or updated graphics and control options; the first also includes the three Gold expansion campaigns. Choose the Evercade cartridges if original-style physical console releases matter more than updated presentation, and choose Tomb Raider: Anniversary only if you want a separate reimagining of the first adventure rather than the original game.

Should I play the Tomb Raider originals or the remasters?
For most players approaching the first six games now, the remasters are the more straightforward choice: they preserve the original adventures while letting you switch visual presentation and choose between classic-style and modern controls. They are collections of the old games with options and updates, not new versions of the stories in the way Anniversary is.

The first collection arrived on February 14, 2024, and the second on February 14, 2025. Taken together, they cover the six Core Design games from Tomb Raider through The Angel of Darkness. That makes the split easy to follow: buy I-III for Lara’s first three adventures, then IV-VI for the next three. The later collection is a separate release, not an add-on that requires I-III Remastered.

Why the remasters are the default recommendation
- They package the main games and expansions. I-III Remastered includes the three additional campaigns, so a player does not need to seek out each Gold release separately.
- You can choose how the games look. Both collections let players switch between the remastered presentation and classic polygonal graphics.
- Controls are selectable. The collections offer classic-style and modern approaches, rather than requiring every player to use one input scheme.
- The releases have received updates. Aspyr’s 2026 I-III patches added or reported specific changes, including 60 fps in classic graphics mode and additional fixes. Those update notes are more useful than treating an older review as a permanent description of the current edition.
When an original release makes more sense
An original release is worth seeking out if the particular version or physical object is part of what you want: for example, a compatible Evercade cartridge or a period copy for a collection. But the remaster’s classic graphics toggle is not proof that it runs an untouched PlayStation, DOS or PC release. The original ports should not be assumed to behave identically across platforms, either.
Vintage discs are also a narrower choice for someone who specifically wants the old release. They are not automatically plug-and-play on a modern system; check the platform, hardware and compatibility requirements for the exact copy before buying.
What is included in each remastered collection?
I-III Remastered covers the first three games and all three named Gold campaigns. IV-VI Remastered covers the next three Core-era games, with a notable restoration effort for The Angel of Darkness.

The I-VI digital bundle is the single-purchase route listed by the publisher for all six games, including the I-III expansions. No live price was verified here, so compare the offer shown on your storefront with buying the two collections separately rather than assuming the bundle is cheaper. Are the remasters the same as playing the originals?
No. The collections let you select classic-style graphics, but that setting should be understood as a presentation option inside a remaster, not a guarantee of pixel-perfect reproduction of an original release. The classic mode is useful if you prefer the old polygonal look; it does not establish identical code, behavior, performance or compatibility to every historical console and computer version.
Controls also affect how the games feel. Aspyr documents modern controls for I-III adapted from Legend, Anniversary and Underworld, with most inputs remappable. The IV-VI collection offers classic tank-style and modern control choices. Those options change how you operate the game, not what game it is: modern input does not turn the original I-III adventures into the reimagined Anniversary.
How to choose a control style
- Choose classic tank-style controls if you want the original movement conventions and want to judge the games on that basis.
- Try modern controls if direct, contemporary input is more comfortable or accessible for you.
- Remap where available if a default layout does not suit your setup; Aspyr says most I-III inputs can be remapped.
There is no objectively best option for every player. In particular, preferences about precise jumps and movement are subjective; no comparative hands-on test establishes one scheme as universally more accurate or enjoyable.

Updates matter when reading older coverage, especially for I-III Remastered. Aspyr’s August 20, 2026 Patch 3 notes say classic graphics mode was updated to 60 fps and mention a brightness slider and clearer pickups in HD mode. The 60 fps figure is Aspyr’s stated feature, not an independent benchmark, and it should not be extended to IV-VI or to original releases.

Aspyr’s October 6, 2026 Patch 4 notes report further platform-wide bug fixes, including progression-related fixes. This is a reason not to treat an early launch-era account as a complete description of the current I-III build. It is not evidence that every bug has been eliminated.
For IV-VI, Aspyr’s announcement described features including photo mode, boss health bars and more than 150 trophies. That trophy figure was an announced count in 2024, not a current independent recount for every platform. The later collection also received changes to camera behavior with modern controls and refinements involving jump switches, ropes and torches in its first patch.
What is different about The Angel of Darkness in IV-VI Remastered?
The remastered collection’s version of The Angel of Darkness includes publisher-documented restored material, which makes it meaningfully different from simply choosing the original release’s graphics. Aspyr identifies a restored Parisian Back Streets training route, purchases at Rennes’ Pawnshop and the Herbalist, restored voice lines, an evolving notebook and previously unused inventory items.
These are specific changes, not proof that every idea once planned for the game has been restored. If your priority is the original 2003 release as it shipped, this remaster is not a substitute for that exact edition. If you want to play the Core-era story with the additions Aspyr documents, IV-VI Remastered is the relevant collection.

Is Anniversary a remake or a remaster?
Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a distinct 2007 reimagining of the 1996 adventure, not the first game packaged in I-III Remastered. Crystal Dynamics describes it as made with an enhanced Legend engine, with newly paced gameplay and an altered presentation of the original story.
That distinction matters when choosing what to buy. Pick I-III Remastered if you want the original first game with its original level-and-movement identity and optional updated presentation. Pick Anniversary if you want a separate interpretation of that adventure. It can be an alternative way to revisit the premise, but it does not replace the original game for someone specifically seeking that experience.

Evercade is a physical route for players who want licensed, original-style console editions rather than Aspyr’s remastered presentation. Blaze Entertainment describes Collection 1 as the first three original-style 32-bit console games on one cartridge, with tweaks for modern displays. Collection 2 covers IV and V and includes a version of the The Times bonus level, but it does not include VI.

Which version should I buy?
Match the edition to the experience you actually want, rather than treating every release as interchangeable.
- Want the original first three adventures and expansions? Choose Tomb Raider I-III Remastered.
- Want the remaining Core-era games? Choose Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, especially if the restored material in The Angel of Darkness interests you.
- Want all six digitally? Check the publisher-listed I-VI bundle and compare its current storefront offer with the two collections bought separately.
- Want original-style physical console releases? Consider Evercade Collections 1 and 2, provided you have compatible hardware and accept that Collection 2 stops at V.
- Want a reimagining of the first adventure? Choose Anniversary, not as a substitute for I-III Remastered but as a different telling.
Physical editions and availability
Aspyr confirms physical Standard and Deluxe releases for I-III Remastered and lists Amazon among its retailers. Its Deluxe description includes a physical game, SteelBook, an exploration map book of more than 80 pages, a collectible box and the original soundtrack. Check the platform, edition, current stock and price at the retailer; an announcement or old listing does not establish present availability.
For IV-VI Remastered, a specialist archive lists Standard, Deluxe and Collector editions, but current retailer stock has not been confirmed. Treat those names as possible edition references, not a guarantee that a particular version is available where you live. Collectible original discs or physical copies of Anniversary are alternatives for collectors, but require checking the exact platform and compatibility before purchase.
