For a family with a Switch 2, Mario Tennis Fever is the best dedicated tennis pick; Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is better if you want tennis as one sport in a larger motion-controlled collection. On the original Switch, choose Mario Tennis Aces for character-filled arcade tennis or Nintendo Switch Sports for a motion-controlled party game that also includes other sports. Aces and Switch Sports are compatible with Switch 2, while Fever and Sports Resort require Switch 2.
The age ratings help clarify the difference: ESRB rates Fever E for Everyone for Mild Fantasy Violence, while Sports Resort is E10+ for Mild Violence, primarily because its collection includes boxing. Tennis itself is an approachable choice in either game.

Choose Mario Tennis Fever for the main event to be tennis
Fever is a Switch 2 exclusive released February 12, 2026. It has 38 playable characters and 30 Fever Rackets, with local play for up to four people. Its special rackets and shots give matches a lively arcade feel rather than trying to simulate professional tennis. Nintendo lists TV, Tabletop, and Handheld play modes.
It is the strongest fit when siblings, parents, or visiting cousins want to play tennis together on one screen. A Switch 2 owner can also use GameShare to let up to three nearby friends play a session on Switch 2 or original Switch systems, even if those friends do not own the game. The shared game is available only for that session.
Choose Nintendo Switch Sports Resort for a broader motion-sports night
Sports Resort is a Switch 2 exclusive released October 22, 2026. Tennis is one of 12 sports, alongside bowling, golf, basketball, table tennis, and others. Nintendo supports up to four offline players on one Switch 2 system. It suits families who want to rotate between sports rather than spend the whole session on tennis.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The ESRB E10+ rating applies to the collection, which includes boxing with punches and knockdowns. ESRB identifies Mild Violence and No Interactive Elements. If you are choosing primarily for tennis, the rating difference from Fever should not be read as a warning that the tennis mode itself has the boxing presentation.
Choose Mario Tennis Aces for an original-Switch tennis game
Aces, released June 22, 2018, remains the clearest dedicated-tennis choice for the original Switch. It also runs on Switch 2, where Nintendo says game behavior is consistent with Switch. Aces offers local or online singles and doubles for up to four players, plus Adventure and Tournament modes. Its optional motion controls are an alternative to playing with the game’s shot-and-strategy controls.
Choose Nintendo Switch Sports if you already have the original Switch
The original Nintendo Switch Sports includes tennis, bowling, volleyball, soccer, golf, badminton, basketball, and Chambara. Its tennis uses Joy-Con swing motion, and the collection is compatible with Switch 2. It is a sensible party-night choice if you want several activities in one game, while Aces is the better fit if tennis should be the focus.

What is the difference between Mario Tennis Fever and Mario Tennis Aces?
Both are character-based tennis games, but Fever is the newer Switch 2-only entry, while Aces is an original-Switch game that also works on Switch 2. Fever emphasizes new rackets, a larger character roster, and GameShare; Aces offers a Switch-compatible route into Mario tennis, with Adventure, Tournament, and optional motion controls.

| ESRB | E: Mild Fantasy Violence; No Interactive Elements | Mild Cartoon Violence; Users Interact |
| File size listed by Nintendo | 7.7 GB | 2.4 GB |
Fever’s ESRB summary describes fantasy-themed shots and projectiles, including fireballs and Bullet Bills, and special shots that can damage opponents. Aces is also cartoon tennis, but its Nintendo store listing includes the Users Interact descriptor. For parents, check the interaction settings and online features for the specific game, not just the shared Mario branding.
Is Fever worth the higher Switch 2 price?
Nintendo’s US store lists Fever at a regular price of $69.99. That is easiest to justify if several people in the household will play its local matches, or if GameShare will help include nearby friends. For a buyer who expects only a short solo campaign, the value case is weaker: allthings.how reported an Adventure mode of roughly three to four hours and summarized criticism of the $70 price for solo-only players. That playtime estimate is a report from that publication, not a guarantee for every player.
Reviews have not all emphasized the same strength. Pocket Tactics scored Fever 9/10 and praised the performance on Switch 2; allthings.how reported scores of 7/10 from IGN, 8/10 from GameSpot, 4.5/5 from PCMag, and 8/10 from Nintendo Life, as well as a Metacritic aggregate around 76. The aggregate is reported second-hand by allthings.how. The strongest practical buying reason is multiplayer variety, not a long solo story.
Is Mario Tennis Fever good for kids?
For many families, yes: ESRB rates it E for Everyone, with Mild Fantasy Violence, and the game’s presentation is fantastical rather than realistic. Regional age labels differ: PEGI lists 7, while Germany’s USK lists 6. Those labels use different rating systems, so they should not be treated as direct equivalents.

Parents looking for a calmer match can start with standard tennis rather than assume every mode plays identically.

Barnevakten’s review explains the PEGI 7 rating by pointing to non-realistic violence, including a story cutscene in which a purple cloud turns Mario and friends into babies. That may matter to a child who is especially sensitive to fantasy transformations even if the broader game is lighthearted. For a general age decision, ESRB’s rating summary and a parent’s knowledge of the child are more useful than treating any single age number as a universal rule.
Does Fever include online chat or user-created content?
ESRB lists No Interactive Elements for Fever. That is a distinct parent-facing descriptor from the game’s online features: Nintendo says online features require Nintendo Switch Online, and the game includes online rooms and ranked matches. Parents can decide whether to enable online play separately from local family sessions.
How does motion-control tennis work, and what do you need?
Motion tennis turns the Joy-Con into a virtual racket: players swing the controller to return the ball rather than relying only on button inputs. It is an easy format to demonstrate to a new player, but it requires room to move safely and enough controllers for the group.
Prepare for a local match
- Check the console and game. Fever and Sports Resort require Switch 2. Aces and original Switch Sports run on Switch and are listed by Nintendo as supported on Switch 2.
- Count controllers before inviting players. Four-player local tennis requires enough Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers for the players. Nintendo specifically advises having extra Joy-Con 2 ready for Sports Resort game nights.
- Use wrist straps and clear the play area. Nintendo warns players to wear wrist straps and allow adequate room during Swing Mode and Sports Resort play. Move furniture and fragile objects out of reach before swinging.
- Pick a mode and hand over controllers. Fever includes Swing Mode; Aces has optional motion controls; Switch Sports and Sports Resort are built around motion sports. In Sports Resort, tennis and table tennis are separate sports: Nintendo Life notes that table tennis uses subtler wrist motion.
Sports Resort supports TV and Tabletop modes in Nintendo’s US listing; Handheld is not listed there. Fever lists TV, Tabletop, and Handheld, though a player physically swinging a controller still needs a safe space around them.
What does a motion match feel like?
Motion controls make tennis an intuitive party activity, but the games are not interchangeable. Nintendo Switch Sports reviewers have described the tennis as easy to pick up, and Nintendo Life notes three different tennis courts in Sports Resort. Table tennis rewards more delicate wrist movement, so it may take more practice than the larger tennis swing.
If someone in the family prefers buttons or wants more deliberate shot selection, Aces or Fever’s standard match play may suit them better than motion-first tennis. For a mixed-age group, offer both options where the game provides them instead of requiring every player to use the same control style.

Can siblings play Mario Tennis Fever together if only one owns it?
Yes, nearby players can join a Switch 2 owner through GameShare for a session, including players on the original Switch. Nintendo describes one owner sharing with up to three nearby friends. The shared game is temporary and stops being playable after that session ends; GameShare is not a permanent copy or substitute for owning the game.
For siblings sharing one console, local play is simpler: Fever supports up to four players on the same system. Nintendo’s Play Nintendo sibling-play video shows two brothers playing a local Doubles Match and cooperating in Trial Towers, illustrating that the game is not limited to opponents-only play.
GameShare and GameChat-related sharing require a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership, according to Nintendo. Players also need to be on the same software version to play together. If a session fails to connect, check that the game is updated on each system and that the required account and membership setup is in place.
Which tennis games work on Switch 2?
Fever and Sports Resort are Switch 2 exclusives. Nintendo lists Mario Tennis Aces and original Nintendo Switch Sports as supported on Switch 2 with game behavior consistent with the original Switch; that means owners can keep playing those older games on the newer console without buying the Switch 2-exclusive entries.
| Game | Original Switch | Switch 2 | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mario Tennis Fever | No | Yes, exclusive | Requires Switch 2 |
| Nintendo Switch Sports Resort | No | Yes, exclusive | Requires Switch 2 |
| Mario Tennis Aces | Yes | Yes | Nintendo says behavior is consistent with Switch |
| Nintendo Switch Sports | Yes | Yes | Nintendo says behavior is consistent with Switch |
Compatibility is not the same as a free upgrade or a new Switch 2 version; the available information establishes that Aces and Switch Sports run on Switch 2, not that they gain the new games’ features. If your household already owns one of them, start there before buying another tennis title.

Are there cheaper or more realistic tennis games on Switch?
Yes. Smaller cartoon games can offer local tennis at a lower-cost end of the market, while career simulations focus more on professional players, timing, and court positioning. Exact current prices for these alternatives are not established here, so check the Nintendo eShop or retailer listing before buying.

For simple cartoon doubles
Super Tennis Blast uses traditional tennis scoring and supports local play with a friend or up to four players in doubles, according to GameSpew. It is a possible budget alternative if the family wants cartoon tennis without prioritizing Mario characters or Fever’s racket system.
For a basic motion game
GameSpew describes Instant Tennis as a cheap eShop motion-control tennis game with local two-player play. The description makes it a narrower choice than the full sports collections: consider it if a simple two-player motion match is all you need, but confirm the current listing and price in your region.
For a household tennis fan who wants a simulation
AO Tennis 2, Matchpoint – Tennis Championships, and Tennis World Tour 2 are more realistic career-simulation options. A Metacritic ranking cited by Alucare lists scores of 69/100 for AO Tennis 2, 58/100 for Matchpoint, and 56/100 for Tennis World Tour 2; those figures are attributed to Alucare’s citation of Metacritic, not a fresh review here. They are better considered after a family has a more immediately accessible party or arcade option, especially if younger children are part of the group.

How were these family picks selected?
The ranking prioritizes the needs implied by “family-friendly”: which Switch systems can run the game, whether tennis is the main activity or one of many, how many people can play locally, what controllers and setup are involved, and the age-rating context. Games with accessible cartoon or motion play rank ahead of realistic career simulations for a mixed-age living room. Current Switch 2 exclusives are separated from original-Switch games that remain compatible with Switch 2, and uncertain or changing prices are identified rather than estimated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mario Tennis Fever need to download anything if I buy the physical card?
DoesItPlay reported testing a retail physical card and recorded that no download was required for the content it checked. That finding concerns the tested card and game content; it does not mean future updates or online features never require downloads.
Can I use any amiibo with Mario Tennis Fever?
Nintendo says a compatible amiibo figure can unlock a character-themed tennis ball. The figure is sold separately, and the feature is a cosmetic customization rather than a requirement for playing matches.
Does Mario Tennis Fever have a cooperative mode for siblings?
Nintendo’s Play Nintendo video demonstrates siblings playing Doubles Match together and cooperating in Trial Towers. The exact experience depends on the selected mode, so look for the cooperative option rather than assuming every match is team-based.
What happens if two players have different Mario Tennis Fever versions?
Nintendo support information summarized by VGKami says players must use the same software version to play together. If multiplayer is unavailable after an update, check for pending updates on both consoles before troubleshooting the connection.
