OrCAD PSpice Designer is the clearest fit if you want one conventional schematic-to-simulation workflow for mixed-mode circuits: it connects schematic design with SPICE analysis and verification, including analog/mixed-signal simulation. NI Multisim, Symica, TopSpice and CircuitLab are alternatives for different needs, from teaching and IC design to browser-based experimentation.

What mixed-mode circuit simulation does

A mixed-mode simulator lets analog and digital parts of a circuit run together in one simulation. For example, an analog signal may cross a threshold and become a logic state; a digital output may then drive an analog section.

The simulator must represent both kinds of behavior and handle their boundary. NI Multisim documentation describes an architecture that solves analog behavior with SPICE and digital behavior with an event-driven XSPICE simulator. Bridge devices translate analog voltages into digital logic states and digital states back into analog voltages. Connecting analog and digital devices directly without the required bridge can cause a simulation error.

TopSpice describes a different scheduling approach: analog and logic algorithms share an event scheduler while using independent time steps for analog and digital sections. These implementation details matter when choosing a tool, especially if a design has frequent analog-to-digital transitions or timing-sensitive logic.

What PSpice offers for design and analysis

OrCAD PSpice Designer ties OrCAD Capture schematics to model assignment and simulation results, including color-coded results. Its listed analyses include transient, bias-point, DC sweep, AC sweep, noise, temperature, parametric, Monte Carlo, Fourier, stress, tolerance and optimization analyses.

For reviewing results, the product page lists waveform plots, Bode and Fourier transforms, automatic measurements and multi-corner analysis. Cadence/EMA product-page feature content from 2024 says PSpice includes over 33,000 simulation-ready models. That is a vendor-published library count, not an independent measure of model quality, simulation speed or accuracy.

How the alternatives differ

NI Multisim: focus on analog/digital co-simulation

Multisim is a strong option when the circuit’s analog/digital boundary is central to the work. Its documented SPICE and XSPICE approach explains why bridge devices matter: they let the two simulation domains exchange compatible representations. Check which bridge or interface models a particular circuit needs rather than assuming any analog pin can connect directly to a digital pin.

Symica: focus on mixed-signal IC design

Symica’s described workflow spans schematic capture, analog behavioral modeling, digital views and transistor-level views, with Verilog-A modeling and HSPICE/Spectre-compatible netlists. Symica/Integrated Solutions LLC reported more than 1,700 test cases against industry-proven standards in 2025. That vendor-published figure describes its stated test coverage; it does not establish that Symica is faster or more accurate than another simulator.

TopSpice: focus on integrated PC-based simulation

TopSpice combines schematic, netlist, simulation and waveform functions in a PC-based environment. Penzar Development listed over 35,000 analog and digital components in 2025. As with other vendor-reported library counts, the number alone does not show how well a model matches a particular part or how a simulator performs on a given design.

CircuitLab: focus on browser access

CircuitLab is suited to sketching, simulating and sharing circuits in a browser. Its documented features include analog and digital components side by side, frequency-domain analysis and parameter stepping. It is a practical choice for learning or early exploration when browser access is more important than a full desktop EDA flow.

How to choose a mixed-mode simulator

Start with the way you need to design and validate the circuit, not with the biggest advertised component count. Compare these points against a representative design from your own work:

  • Schematic-to-simulation integration: Can you assign models, configure analyses and inspect results without moving through a disconnected workflow?
  • Analog/digital interfaces: Does the tool provide the bridge or interface models your circuit requires, and how does it handle domain transitions?
  • Model coverage: Are suitable models available for the actual components you plan to use? A library’s total count is not a substitute for checking specific models.
  • Analysis needs: Confirm support for the analyses you use, such as transient, AC, noise, temperature or Monte Carlo analysis.
  • Timing and scheduling: If digital events interact closely with analog behavior, understand how the simulator schedules each domain and whether its approach suits your circuit.
  • Results and reporting: Check for the plots, measurements, corner comparisons and export options needed to interpret or share results.
  • Deployment and licensing: Decide whether you need a desktop environment, browser access, or a particular organizational workflow. The product descriptions summarized here do not establish current prices or licensing terms, so check vendors for those details.

Are advertised model counts a reliable way to compare tools?

Not by themselves. Cadence/EMA cited over 33,000 simulation-ready models for PSpice in 2024, and Penzar Development cited over 35,000 analog and digital components for TopSpice in 2025. Those figures use different descriptions and dates, and neither is an independent speed, accuracy or total-cost benchmark. Confirm that the specific models you need are available and suitable before choosing a product.
