Choose Pokémon Sword if you want Deino, Jangmo-o, Sirfetch’d, Stonjourner, Bea, Gordie or Zacian. Choose Pokémon Shield if you prefer Larvitar, Goomy, Galarian Ponyta, Eiscue, Allister, Melony or Zamazenta. The main Galar adventure is shared, so the decision is primarily about version-exclusive Pokémon, Gym Leaders and the cover legendary—not a different campaign.
The short answer
Neither game is broadly “better.” Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield use the same central story, region and progression, but each version changes a set of obtainable Pokémon, two Gym Leader encounters and the mascot Legendary Pokémon. Pick the version whose exclusives fit the team or collection you want to build.

Trading with someone who owns the opposite version can fill many gaps, so exclusives matter most when you collect independently, are planning a particular team or simply favor one Legendary or Gym Leader.

What is the same in both versions?
Both editions are versions of the same Galar-region adventure. The broad campaign, region and core progression are shared. You are not choosing between two unrelated stories or separate game engines. The meaningful differences documented by the official version information are the Pokémon that appear exclusively in one edition, the Gym Leaders assigned to certain battles and the cover Legendary.

That shared foundation makes the purchase a preference decision. A player who trades regularly can obtain Pokémon from the other edition, while a solo player who wants to catch everything without outside help will feel the version split more strongly.
Pokémon Sword exclusives
Sword’s representative exclusive Pokémon include the following:
- Deino
- Jangmo-o
- Sirfetch’d
- Stonjourner
- Galarian Darumaka
- Galarian Darmanitan
These are examples identified on the official Version Exclusives page rather than a claim that the list above contains every version difference. If one of these Pokémon is central to your planned playthrough or collection, Sword removes the need to trade for it from another version.

Choose Sword when you specifically want to raise Deino or Jangmo-o, use Sirfetch’d or Stonjourner, or prefer the Galarian Darumaka line. The choice can also be aesthetic: some buyers select the game around the Pokémon they most want to see in their own save file, even when an opposite-version trade would eventually provide the same species.
Pokémon Shield exclusives
Shield’s representative exclusive Pokémon are:
- Larvitar
- Goomy
- Galarian Ponyta
- Eiscue
- Galarian Corsola
- Cursola
Shield is therefore the natural choice if Larvitar, Goomy, Galarian Ponyta or Eiscue is the deciding Pokémon. It also gives you the Galarian Corsola and Cursola line without relying on a trade from a Sword player.

Why Shield may suit a collector
A solo collector may prefer Shield because its exclusive list includes several species and regional forms that cannot be obtained in an unassisted Sword save. If you already know that a specific Shield-exclusive belongs on your first team, that personal preference is more useful than general claims that one edition is superior.
The Gym Leader differences
The official version page summarizes the split with the statement, “Each Version of the Game Has Different Gym Leaders for You to Challenge!” The battles affected are:

This is a change to whom you challenge during the adventure, not a separate campaign. If you have a favorite Leader, choose the corresponding edition: Bea and Gordie point to Sword, while Allister and Melony point to Shield.
The cover Legendary: Zacian or Zamazenta?
Pokémon Sword features Zacian as its mascot Legendary, while Pokémon Shield features Zamazenta. For many buyers this is the simplest decision rule: choose the box and save file associated with the Legendary you prefer.
The two Legendary choices also provide a lasting identity for the edition you own. Because the cover Legendary is tied to the version branding, a fan who wants Zacian should buy Sword and a fan who wants Zamazenta should buy Shield rather than expecting the other game to provide the same centerpiece in the same way.

Does the Expansion Pass change which edition you should buy?
The Expansion Pass adds two areas, The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. Nintendo Support lists the Expansion Pass at $29.99 USD (Nintendo, 2020). Nintendo says the two areas together add more than 200 Pokémon that were not in the original Galar regional lineup.

It is sold as a version-specific pass, so the edition name remains critical even after you decide to buy extra content.
Version compatibility is strict
The official purchase information states: “Each Expansion Pass is only compatible with the game version of the same name.” In practical terms:
- A Sword Expansion Pass works with Pokémon Sword.
- A Shield Expansion Pass works with Pokémon Shield.
- Buying the pass with the wrong version name will not unlock its content for your game.
There is no universal Sword-and-Shield pass that can be applied to either cartridge. Check the game title you own before paying, especially if you are buying a digital code or shopping from a listing whose product name is abbreviated.
What the complete physical bundles contain
Official bundle packs combine the base game with its matching Expansion Pass, and all included software is preloaded on one game card. For a new physical buyer who already knows which version they want, this is the most straightforward all-in-one purchase: select either the Sword + Expansion Pass bundle or the Shield + Expansion Pass bundle, not the opposite version.

If you already own the base game, buying only the matching Expansion Pass avoids purchasing the game a second time. If you do not own either game and want the DLC from the start, compare the available complete bundle for the version you selected.
A decision process that works
- Choose your must-have Pokémon. Mark whether you care more about Sword examples such as Deino, Jangmo-o, Sirfetch’d and Stonjourner, or Shield examples such as Larvitar, Goomy, Galarian Ponyta and Eiscue.
- Choose your preferred Gym Leaders. Sword gives you Bea and Gordie; Shield gives you Allister and Melony.
- Choose the Legendary on the cover. Zacian means Sword, and Zamazenta means Shield.
- Decide whether you need DLC. If you want The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra, include the Expansion Pass in the purchase plan.
- Match every product name. Sword requires Sword software and the Sword Expansion Pass; Shield requires Shield software and the Shield Expansion Pass.
- Consider your trading situation. If you have reliable access to another player with the opposite version, exclusives are easier to obtain later. If you intend to play and collect alone, prioritize the exclusive list more heavily.
Which edition fits common buyer situations?
You are buying your first game and want a favorite Pokémon
Start with the exclusive list, not the price or cover color. A buyer who wants Larvitar or Galarian Ponyta should select Shield; a buyer who wants Deino or Jangmo-o should select Sword. This keeps the preferred Pokémon available without arranging a trade.
You are choosing based on Gym Leaders
Select Sword for Bea and Gordie, or Shield for Allister and Melony. The version determines which pair you challenge, so this is a valid reason to choose one edition even when the Pokémon lists do not decide the issue.
You are choosing based on the Legendary
Select Sword for Zacian or Shield for Zamazenta. This is the clearest one-step decision when the mascot Pokémon is your primary attachment to the game.
You already own Pokémon Sword or Shield
Buy only the Expansion Pass carrying the same version name as your existing game. A Shield owner needs the Shield Expansion Pass, and a Sword owner needs the Sword Expansion Pass. The opposite pass will not activate the DLC for that copy.

You want a physical package with all content
Choose the physical bundle that names your selected base game and its matching Expansion Pass. The official bundles place the included software on one game card, so verify both names before checkout.
Trading, collecting and the practical impact of exclusives
Version exclusives are not permanent barriers to a complete collection. Trading with players of the opposite edition can supply Pokémon unavailable in your own version. That makes the split less important for players with an active trading partner or community.
The split remains important in three cases:
- Solo collectors: you want to catch as much as possible without depending on another player.
- Team builders: a particular exclusive is part of your planned story or competitive roster.
- Preference-driven buyers: you want one Legendary, regional form or Gym Leader pairing from the outset.
Trading changes how difficult it is to complete a collection; it does not change which version contains the listed exclusives during normal play.

Assuming the DLC is interchangeable
It is not. The pass must match the base game name exactly. Recheck “Sword” or “Shield” in the product title before purchase.
Buying a pass when you do not own the game
An Expansion Pass is additional content, not a substitute for the base game. New buyers who want both should select a bundle that includes the game and matching pass.
Choosing a version because one is generally called “better”
The documented differences are preference-based. There is no single edition that wins for every player because the main adventure is shared and the deciding content is version-specific.
Expecting a bundle to work across versions
A Sword bundle is for Sword, and a Shield bundle is for Shield. The same-name rule applies whether you buy the base game and pass separately or together.
