There is no universal winner. Choose the control built into the platforms your child actually uses: Apple Screen Time for an all-Apple household, Google Family Link for Android phones and Chromebooks, and Microsoft Family Safety for Windows PCs and Xbox. If one child uses several operating systems and you want one dashboard, evaluate Qustodio first. Bark is aimed more at safety alerts around risky communication, while Net Nanny is a better fit when real-time web filtering is the priority.
The deciding issue is not the number of features in an app’s marketing list. It is where a rule is enforced, which account it follows, and what the operating system allows. A game-time limit that works on an iPhone may not control an Xbox, Windows PC, or Chromebook. Match the app to the device mix before paying for a subscription.
What is the best parental control app for gaming across devices?
For most families, the best starting point is the platform-native option, not a separate subscription. Native controls are free, understand the child account on that platform, and can enforce schedules where the operating system permits it. A paid cross-platform service becomes more useful when one child regularly moves between Apple, Android, Windows, Mac, Chromebook, and console devices.

| App | Best fit | Gaming and screen-time controls | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Screen Time | iPhone, iPad, and Mac households | Downtime, category limits such as games, individual app limits, content restrictions, and exception requests | Designed for Apple devices; it is not a universal manager for Android, Windows, or Xbox |
| Google Family Link | Android phones or tablets with Chromebooks | Daily limits, schedules, app blocking or approval, bonus time, and app-specific limits that Google says apply across the child’s Android and Chrome OS devices | Controls depend on supported Android and Chrome OS versions and the child’s account setup |
| Microsoft Family Safety | Windows PCs and Xbox consoles, with connected Android devices | Per-game or per-app time amounts and schedules; screen-time schedules across connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices | Xbox time continues while the child is signed in, even if a game is paused or another person is using the console |
| Qustodio | Mixed-device families wanting one paid dashboard | Broad cross-platform management is the reason to evaluate it; confirm the exact controls for every child device and subscription tier | Platform restrictions mean features are not identical on every operating system |
| Bark | Families prioritizing alerts about risky communication and online safety | Screen-time management, website and app blocking, and location features are part of its reported offering | Apple monitoring coverage is more limited than its broad feature list; alerts are not the same as hard game-time enforcement |
| Net Nanny | Families prioritizing browser and content filtering | Real-time web filtering and related browser controls | Web filtering is a different job from enforcing play time on a console |
These are different solutions rather than a single ranking. Start with the row that matches the devices and the problem you are actually trying to solve.

How do I choose an app for my child’s devices?
List every device the child can use, then decide whether the rule should follow a device, an app, or the child’s account. A phone-only solution can look effective until the child switches to a tablet, browser, PC, or console that is outside the policy.
Apple-only households
Use Apple Screen Time when the child uses an iPhone, iPad, and Mac. With Family Sharing configured, Apple says a parent can manage the child’s Screen Time from the parent’s iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro. You can set Downtime, limit the Games category or an individual game, apply content restrictions, and handle exception requests.
Keep the family devices updated. Apple’s documentation says Screen Time settings should be synchronized across family devices by keeping them on the latest software version. If an Android phone, Windows PC, or Xbox is also available, Screen Time cannot be treated as the household-wide answer; add the native control for that platform or consider a cross-platform service.
Android and Chromebook households
Google Family Link is the natural free starting point for Android phones, tablets, and Chromebooks. In the parent app, select the child’s profile to set a daily device limit, create schedules, approve or block apps, assign an app-specific limit, or give bonus time.
Google states that app limits apply across apps installed on the child’s Android and Chrome OS devices. That makes it more useful than separate timers on a phone and Chromebook, provided both devices are connected to the same supervised child account. Confirm the device requirements before relying on a feature: Google documents Android 7 or later for app limits and has separate Chrome OS version requirements.
Windows PCs and Xbox consoles
Microsoft Family Safety is the ecosystem-native choice when gaming is concentrated on Windows and Xbox. Microsoft says limits extend across connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices. You can set the amount of time and allowed schedule for an individual app or game, then use separate screen-time schedules for Windows, Xbox, and connected Android devices.

There is a practical Xbox detail that can make a correct-looking setup appear broken. Microsoft says Xbox screen time continues while the child is signed in, even if the game is paused or another person is using the console. Make signing out part of the household routine whenever the child finishes, and use separate child accounts rather than sharing an adult profile.
Mixed-device households
When a child moves between iPhone or iPad, Android, Windows, Mac, Chromebook, and console devices, Qustodio is the paid direction worth evaluating first because it is designed around a broader dashboard. Treat that as a reason to investigate, not a promise that every feature will work everywhere.
Before subscribing, map the exact child-device mix to the plan’s supported platforms and limits. Check whether the feature you need is an individual game limit, a whole-device schedule, web filtering, location, reporting, or an alert. A service can cover a device for reports while lacking the operating-system permission needed to stop a game at a precise time.
Can one parental-control app manage games on multiple devices?
Sometimes, but “multiple devices” can mean two different things. A rule may follow a child’s account across devices, or it may be created separately on each device. Google explicitly describes app limits across a child’s Android and Chrome OS devices, and Microsoft describes limits extending across connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices. Apple’s controls synchronize within its family ecosystem when the required setup and current software are in place.
Cross-platform services still depend on each operating system’s permissions. Use this checklist before assuming one timer covers everything:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Child identity: Every device must use the supervised child account, not an adult account or a guest profile.
- Scope: Determine whether the limit is per game, per app category, per device, or shared across the child’s devices.
- Schedule: Check whether the rule specifies both a duration and the hours in which play is allowed.
- Console behavior: Confirm how sign-in, multiple users, paused games, and switching profiles affect the timer.
- Browser coverage: A game launched in a browser may be governed by web controls rather than an app limit.
- Plan limits: For a paid service, verify the number and types of devices included before purchase.
How do I limit gaming on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac?
Use Family Sharing and Screen Time so the parent manages the child’s account rather than trying to police each device manually.

- Set up the child in your Apple Family Sharing group and confirm that the child is signed in with that account on each Apple device.
- Open Screen Time for the child from the parent device. Apple supports management from an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro when Family Sharing is configured.
- Choose Downtime for a recurring no-play period, then add an App Limit for the Games category or for a named game.
- Apply content and privacy restrictions appropriate to the child’s age, and decide how exception requests should be handled.
- Update family devices to the latest available software so Screen Time settings synchronize as Apple documents.
- Check each device after setup. If a game is available through a different Apple account or a browser, the restriction may not cover that access path.
Apple’s model is strongest when every screen is an Apple screen. It should not be presented as a way to manage a Windows PC, Android handset, or Xbox.
How do I limit gaming on Android phones and Chromebooks?
Family Link can combine a daily schedule with limits for particular apps, and Google says those app limits apply across the child’s Android and Chrome OS devices.
- Install Family Link on the parent device and add or select the supervised child account.
- In the child’s profile, review the listed Android and Chromebook devices and make sure each is signed in to the supervised account.
- Set a daily device limit and a bedtime or other schedule for the hours when the device should be unavailable.
- Open app controls to block a game, approve it, or assign an app-specific limit. Use bonus time when you want a one-off exception without changing the recurring rule.
- Check the operating-system requirements. Google documents Android 7 or later for app limits and separate Chrome OS requirements; an older device may not honor the control you expect.
- Test the handoff between the phone and Chromebook by checking the remaining allowance on both. The rule only follows the child account when both devices are correctly supervised.
Family Link is a strong fit for Android-and-Chromebook homes because the same app limit can cover installations on both operating systems. It does not make an Xbox or Windows PC part of that policy.

Use Microsoft Family Safety with a separate child Microsoft account, then set both the amount of time and the allowed schedule for the game or app.
- Add the child’s Microsoft account to your family group and sign that account into the Windows PC and Xbox the child uses.
- Open the child’s profile in Family Safety and select the relevant app or game.
- Set the permitted amount of time and the hours in which that time may be used. Microsoft documents separate screen-time schedules for Windows, Xbox, and connected Android devices.
- Repeat the check for every gaming device. A Windows rule and an Xbox rule only work as intended when the child uses the connected account rather than an adult profile.
- Require the child to sign out of Xbox when finished. Microsoft says time continues while the child remains signed in, even if a game is paused or someone else is using the console.
- Review activity and adjust the schedule after observing normal school, homework, and weekend patterns. Do not use an adult account as a workaround for a forgotten password; that bypass removes the identity the limit depends on.
When should I choose Qustodio for mixed devices?
Choose a paid cross-platform dashboard when maintaining separate Apple, Google, and Microsoft rules is more confusing than the subscription is worth. Qustodio is the strongest direction to investigate for a child using several operating systems.
Evaluate it against the actual household rather than a feature checklist. Write down each child, device, operating system, browser, console, and game. Then confirm whether the plan supports:

Platform restrictions still apply to paid products. Do not assume that a control documented for Android also exists on iOS, or that a phone policy can stop play on an Xbox. If a critical feature is not explicitly listed for the child’s platform and plan, treat it as unconfirmed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAre Bark and Net Nanny good for gaming limits?
They address adjacent needs, so the right choice depends on whether the main risk is communication, web content, or elapsed game time.
When Bark makes sense
Bark is better suited to older children and teens when parents want alerts about bullying, self-harm signals, risky communication, social activity, or messaging around gaming. Current coverage describes screen-time management, website and app blocking, and location features, but also notes that Apple monitoring is more limited than the broad feature list may suggest.
Use Bark when an alert can start a conversation or intervention. Do not describe an alert as a guaranteed lockout at bedtime. Verify the platforms and apps covered before relying on it for a specific game or messaging service.
When Net Nanny makes sense
Net Nanny belongs on the shortlist when browser access and inappropriate websites are the central concern. Real-time web filtering can complement a game schedule, especially for younger children who reach games through websites.
Web filtering does not automatically enforce play time on a console. If Xbox or Windows time limits are the primary requirement, use the native Microsoft controls or a service that explicitly supports those devices and rules.

What controls matter more than an app’s feature count?
Compare products on enforcement, coverage, and visibility rather than on the length of the marketing page.
| Decision point | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Device and console coverage | Does it support every iPhone, Android, Chromebook, Windows PC, Mac, and Xbox the child can use? | One unmanaged screen can defeat an otherwise strict schedule. |
| Rule scope | Is the limit attached to a child account, device, app, category, or game? | A per-device timer may not follow the child to another screen. |
| Gaming controls | Can you set an individual game, category, daily allowance, recurring schedule, bonus time, and exception process? | Families need different controls for school nights, weekends, and one-off requests. |
| Filtering and safety | Does it block websites, filter search, block apps, or alert on risky messages? | These solve content and safety problems that a timer alone cannot solve. |
| Reporting and privacy | What activity is visible, where is it stored, and can the child disable reporting? | More monitoring is not automatically better; choose the minimum visibility needed for safety. |
| Bypass resistance | Can the child use an administrator, guest, second account, another browser, or an unsigned-in console profile? | Account permissions and sign-out behavior often matter more than the timer interface. |
| Cost and scale | How many children and devices does the free or paid tier include? | A subscription is only useful if it covers the real household without requiring parallel rules. |
How do I stop gaming after bedtime on every device?
Use one written household rule, then implement the strongest native schedule on each platform. A single app cannot compensate for an unmanaged account or a console left signed in.
- Choose the bedtime window and define whether it applies to games only or to the whole device.
- Create the recurring schedule in Apple Screen Time, Family Link, Microsoft Family Safety, or the selected paid service.
- Apply the rule to the child’s account, not an adult account shared with parents.
- Check alternate access: a Chromebook after an Android limit, a browser game after an app limit, or an Xbox profile that remains signed in.
- Require sign-out from Xbox and other shared consoles when play ends.
- Use the service’s exception or bonus-time workflow for legitimate late use instead of handing over an administrator password.
- Review the rule after a week and correct gaps caused by a newly added device, account, or browser.
What can children bypass, and how can parents fix it?
Most failures come from identity and coverage gaps rather than a broken timer. Check these symptoms before replacing the app.

- The limit works on a phone but not a tablet: Confirm both devices use the supervised child account and that the product supports shared limits on that operating system.
- A game remains available after an app block: Look for a browser version, a second installation, or an alternate account.
- Xbox time disappears too quickly: Check whether the child stayed signed in while the console was paused or used by another person.
- A Chromebook ignores the expected rule: Verify the Chrome OS version and that the device appears under the child’s supervised account.
- Reports show activity but no hard stop: Monitoring and alerts are not equivalent to enforcement. Use a platform control that explicitly supports a time allowance and schedule.
- A paid app covers only some functions: Compare the plan and operating-system matrix; cross-platform branding does not remove platform permissions.
Which app should I choose for my household?
Use this decision path:
- All Apple: Start with Apple Screen Time.
- Android plus Chromebook: Start with Google Family Link.
- Windows plus Xbox: Start with Microsoft Family Safety, and enforce sign-out on the console.
- Several operating systems: Evaluate Qustodio against the exact devices, children, and subscription limits.
- Safety alerts around messaging and social activity: Investigate Bark, while verifying Apple coverage and distinguishing alerts from lockouts.
- Browser and inappropriate-content filtering: Investigate Net Nanny, while using a separate console-capable control for gaming schedules.
The most reliable setup is the one that follows the child’s account across every screen they can actually reach. If a platform is outside the app’s documented coverage, add its native control rather than assuming the dashboard sees it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do parental-control settings carry over when my child gets a new phone?
They usually carry over only when the new device is added to the same supervised child account and the platform supports account-based synchronization. Recheck every device after migration; a new account, guest profile, or unsupported operating-system version creates a fresh gap.
Can I use Apple Screen Time and a paid cross-platform app together?
You can, but overlapping limits may produce confusing lockouts and duplicate notifications. Decide which system is authoritative for each device, and use the second product only for a distinct job such as reporting or web filtering.
Should I set one daily gaming allowance or different weekday and weekend schedules?
Different schedules are usually easier to enforce because school nights and weekends have different routines. Keep the rule understandable to the child and use the platform’s bonus-time or exception process for occasional changes.

Home-device controls cannot govern a device owned by another family. Agree on a separate rule for visits, and make sure the child’s account is not saved on shared hardware where another person can use it.
Are monitoring alerts enough to keep a child safe while gaming?
No. Alerts can identify risky conversations or content, but they do not necessarily stop play or block a service. Pair safety monitoring with age-appropriate conversations, account permissions, and explicit game-time schedules.
