For most US buyers who want the original gray PlayStation, a tested SCPH-5501 is the most flexible starting point: it keeps the serial and parallel expansion ports, and its usual PU-18 board is covered by xStation installation guidance. That is a practical recommendation, not proof that every 5501 is more reliable than every other revision. A working console with demonstrated disc playback is a better buy than an untested unit with a supposedly ideal model number.
If you do not need parallel-port expansion, the later gray SCPH-9001 may suit ordinary disc play; the SCPH-7501 is another gray-shell option. The compact white SCPH-101 PS one is a redesign, not an original gray-shell model. Below, the distinctions that matter most are condition, region, ports, board compatibility, video connection and what the seller includes.
Which original PlayStation model is best to buy?
For a North American buyer seeking a gray original PlayStation, start by looking for a SCPH-5501 in demonstrated working condition. It preserves the original console’s accessible parallel and serial ports, and its usual PU-18 motherboard is among the board types covered by xStation installation guidance. If those expansion options do not matter to you, the SCPH-9001 is a reasonable later gray-shell choice; the SCPH-7501 is a middle-ground alternative.
Do not treat the model number as a guarantee of reliability. These are decades-old used consoles, and the condition of the individual optical drive matters more than a revision’s reputation. A seller’s video showing a game load and continue playing is more meaningful than a power light, boot screen or claim that the laser was adjusted. The available repair reference also warns that the same exterior model can conceal different internal boards, so a label alone cannot establish every internal feature or mod compatibility. Console Artisan’s PS1 repair reference describes diagnostic checks, rather than indiscriminate potentiometer adjustment, as the sensible route for drive problems.

How do the original PlayStation models compare?
These are North American model numbers. Regional versions can differ in power and video standards as well as game compatibility, so compare like with like before buying.
| Model | Why consider it | What to check or give up |
|---|---|---|
| SCPH-5501 | Best flexible starting point in the gray-shell range; normally retains the parallel and serial ports. Its usual PU-18 board is documented in xStation installation guidance. | Verify the optical drive with a real game. It does not have separate rear RCA outputs. |
| SCPH-7501 | Later gray-shell alternative that normally retains the serial and parallel ports. | Internal boards can differ, and some late 750x shells make the parallel port difficult to access. Do not assume a particular mod will fit based only on the label. |
| SCPH-9001 | Gray console for buyers focused on ordinary disc play rather than parallel-port expansion. | It normally has no externally accessible parallel port. An early internal-board exception does not make that port usable from outside the shell. |
| SCPH-1001 | Early gray model with separate composite and stereo RCA sockets; it may appeal to collectors or a setup that benefits from those sockets. | Its earlier drive has a documented skipping reputation, so ask for a stronger playback demonstration. The North American 1001 does not have a dedicated S-Video jack. |
| SCPH-101 PS one | Compact white redesign for someone who wants original PlayStation disc hardware without the gray shell. | Uses an external power adapter and does not expose the original serial or parallel expansion port. |
Model features and port differences are summarized in ConsoleMods’ PS1 model comparison; Sony model identifiers and accessories are cataloged by PSX-SPX’s hardware-number reference. This table is a guide to trade-offs, not a measured ranking of failure rates, picture quality or sound quality. There is no well-supported universal winner for sharpest video, and claims that the SCPH-1001 DAC produces better gaming sound should not be treated as measured proof.
Is the SCPH-5501 better than the SCPH-7501?
Neither model is categorically better: the 5501 is the easier default to justify when flexibility and documented board options matter, while a well-kept 7501 can be a perfectly sensible disc-playing console. Both normally retain the serial and parallel ports, but internal board revisions and shell access complicate mod assumptions.

The practical distinction is not “old is good” versus “new is good.” Decide whether you need an accessible parallel port, whether a specific installation requires a particular motherboard, and whether the seller can show that the actual console works. xStation installation documentation covers PU-7, early PU-8, late PU-8 and PU-18 boards. That makes it a reason to investigate board identity, not a promise that every console of a given exterior model is compatible. The repair reference specifically documents variation in boards beneath the same exterior model; specialist installation is a separate undertaking.
For an unmodified console intended mainly for discs, choose the better-documented, better-condition listing rather than paying a premium for an assumed advantage that the evidence does not establish. If a seller claims mod compatibility, request clear photographs and confirmation of the board revision before buying.

Does the SCPH-9001 have a parallel port?
Ordinarily, no: the SCPH-9001 does not provide an externally accessible parallel port. If you specifically want expansion through that port, favor a model with a visible, accessible port and verify it in listing photographs.
An early internal-board exception does not change the buying answer: a port that is not accessible through the console’s exterior is not a usable external expansion connection. The SCPH-9001 is still a reasonable option when your priority is standard disc play and you have no use for parallel-port accessories or expansion. Check the rear connectors instead of relying on a seller’s model description alone.

Does the SCPH-1001 have S-Video?
No dedicated S-Video socket is present on the North American SCPH-1001. All PS1 revisions provide S-Video, composite and RGB through the Multi AV connector, so use a compatible Multi AV cable rather than choosing an early US model in the mistaken belief that it has a separate S-Video jack.
The Japanese SCPH-1000 is the unusual model with a separate S-Video socket. That detail should not be confused with the North American SCPH-1001. For video connection background, ConsoleMods’ PS1 video-output notes explain the available signals and connector distinctions. A cable must be made for the PS1’s Multi AV output; a PS2/PS3-only component cable is not a native PS1 component-output solution.
On a modern TV, signal handling can matter as much as the console revision. Some games switch between 240p and 480i, and displays or scalers can behave differently with those signals. Pick a compatible cable or scaler based on the display setup rather than assuming a particular PlayStation revision produces a universally sharper picture.

Should you buy an original gray PlayStation or a PS one?
Choose the gray console if you want the original design, accessible expansion ports on the relevant revisions, or the model-specific connections described above. Choose the white SCPH-101 PS one if compact size is the priority and you are comfortable with an external power adapter and no accessible original serial or parallel port.
The PS one is a redesign, not simply a smaller gray-shell revision. For a North American PS one, the documented console adapter is SCPH-113, rated 7.5 V DC, 2.0 A. Confirm the adapter model and plug before purchasing a replacement. An optional clip-on LCD has a different adapter requirement, so do not assume the console’s supply is correct for a screen-and-console arrangement. The accessory model and adapter specification are listed in the hardware-number catalog.
A compact console listing may not include the controller, memory card, video cable or power adapter you need. Check the bundle contents and budget for missing compatible accessories. Sony accessory identifiers in the hardware catalog include memory card SCPH-1020 and DualShock controller SCPH-1200; verify what is actually included rather than assuming a used console comes with either.
How do region and power affect your choice?
Regular retail PlayStation consoles are region-locked. The model-number ending generally identifies the intended region: 0 for Japan, 1 for the US and Canada, and 2 for Europe and Oceania. ConsoleMods states that “All regular retail models of the PSX are region locked and will only play software from their original region.” This is a statement from its technical reference, not a Sony quotation. See ConsoleMods’ region information.
For a US buyer with North American games, a North American model avoids making an import’s game compatibility and electrical setup a separate problem. Imports are not merely different-colored or differently labeled versions: power supplies and video standards can differ. The unusual early Japanese SCPH-1000 region exception is not a reason to assume a typical imported console is region-free. Confirm that the model and intended games match before buying; do not infer broad compatibility from an exceptional model.

What should you ask a seller to show?
Ask for evidence about the specific console being sold, not just a stock photo or a generic statement that it powers on. A short demonstration of a known-good original game loading and continuing to play is the most useful basic check for an optical-drive console.
- Get clear photographs. Ask for the bottom SCPH label, the rear connectors and all included accessories. The label establishes the exterior model; the port photograph verifies what is accessible.
- Request a meaningful playback video. Ideally, it should show a known-good original game loading and continuing to play, including a streamed audio passage or full-motion video. A power light or boot screen alone does not establish that the drive can read and sustain playback.
- Check the disc and bundle. Ask what disc was used in the demonstration and inspect its condition. Confirm whether a controller, memory card, correct power supply and suitable video cable are included, because these change the total setup cost.
- Clarify repair claims. If the listing says “laser adjusted,” ask what symptoms were present and what diagnosis was performed. A vague adjustment claim is not a substitute for a working playback demonstration.
- For a planned mod, verify the board separately. Ask for internal-board identification or confirmation from a qualified installer. Similar shells and model labels do not prove the same motherboard.
This is particularly important with early SCPH-1001 listings, given the documented skipping reputation, but it applies to every revision: a favorable model number cannot compensate for an unproven or poorly described drive. No reliable used-market average or model-specific failure rate is established here, so judge the actual unit and its evidence rather than an invented price or reliability statistic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What video accessories should you budget for?
First identify the TV or scaler input you intend to use, then choose a PS1-compatible Multi AV cable or signal converter. The console supplies composite, S-Video and RGB via Multi AV; the cable or adapter determines which of those signals your display receives. Avoid buying a component cable intended only for PS2 or PS3 on the assumption that the PS1 itself outputs native component video.
A PlayStation RAD2X is one option whose maker says it handles PS1 and PS one signals. Its setup calls for additional mini-HDMI and USB power connections. The checked product listing was out of stock, so availability and price should be confirmed directly rather than assumed. No particular cable or scaler is a guaranteed image-quality upgrade for every TV; 240p/480i handling is part of the compatibility decision. A controller, SCPH-1020-compatible memory card and appropriate cable may also be separate purchases if the used bundle is incomplete.

How should you make the final choice?
Use the following order so a model-number preference does not distract from the things that determine whether the console will work for your setup:

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Match region to your games and location. For a typical US setup, begin with a North American model rather than assuming an import is interchangeable.
- Prioritize demonstrated condition. Prefer a console shown loading and sustaining playback over an untested unit of a theoretically preferred revision.
- Choose ports based on an actual need. If you want parallel-port expansion, verify that the port is physically accessible; the SCPH-9001 normally lacks it. For general disc play, that trade-off may not matter.
- Confirm internal-board requirements if modding. A model number is a starting clue, not board-level proof. Check the intended board type and installation guidance before purchase.
- Plan the display connection. Choose a PS1-compatible Multi AV cable or converter for the TV, and remember that game signal mode can affect display behavior.
- Calculate the complete setup. Include any missing controller, memory card, power adapter and video cable. For a PS one, verify the correct adapter arrangement, especially if an LCD is included.
For most buyers, that process points to a fairly described, playback-demonstrated SCPH-5501 as the flexible gray-shell starting point. It does not make a tested 7501 or 9001 a bad buy, nor does it make an untested 5501 a safe one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an SCPH-113 adapter with a PS one LCD screen?
Do not assume so. The documented SCPH-113 specification is for the North American PS one console, while an optional clip-on LCD has a different adapter requirement; verify the exact screen and console arrangement before connecting a supply.
Does a matching power-plug shape mean an imported PlayStation is safe to use?
No. Imported versions can differ in power requirements as well as video standards. Check the console and adapter specifications for the exact region and model, not just whether the plug fits.
Will a PS2 or PS3 component cable give a PS1 component video output?
No native PS1 component output is established here. PS1 video is available through its Multi AV connector as composite, S-Video or RGB, so choose a cable or converter designed for the PS1 and the input your display accepts.
Is the SCPH-1000 the same model as the SCPH-1001?
No. The SCPH-1000 is the Japanese model and is the unusual early version with a separate S-Video socket; the North American SCPH-1001 does not have that dedicated jack. Regional model differences also matter for games, power and video standards.
