Short answer: For CUDA-based distributed training, use the NCCL backend. NCCL documents GPU communication over Ethernet and InfiniBand, and NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance includes both InfiniBand and RoCE fabrics. That does not mean every adapter with an Ethernet or InfiniBand label is automatically supported. The adapter, driver, firmware, PCIe and GPU topology, fabric configuration, operating system, and NCCL version must work together.
Storage controllers solve a different problem. NVMe devices and their controllers deliver datasets and checkpoints to each training host; they do not carry NCCL’s inter-node collectives. If you want direct GPU-to-storage transfers with GPUDirect Storage (GDS), you must additionally verify the NVMe device, filesystem, alignment, GDS software, GPU platform, and transport stack.
What “support” means in a distributed training system
A distributed job has two independent data paths. The first is the collective-communication path: GPUs exchange gradients, parameters, and synchronization messages between hosts. The second is the storage path: each host reads training data and writes checkpoints, logs, and optimizer state. A fast storage controller cannot compensate for a poorly configured network, and a high-speed network adapter does not make a filesystem GDS-capable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNetwork adapters carry the collectives
PyTorch’s torch.distributed documentation gives the direct recommendation: “Use the NCCL backend for distributed training with CUDA GPU.” NCCL selects network interfaces automatically in many installations, but it also provides environment variables for overriding that selection when a host has multiple ports or management and data networks.

Storage controllers feed and persist the job
Controllers attached to local NVMe, a shared filesystem, or NVMe over Fabrics are used for input pipelines and checkpoint I/O. They are not an inter-node collective engine. Their suitability depends on queue depth, latency, filesystem behavior, durability requirements, and—only for GDS—the specific direct-I/O compatibility rules.
Which network interconnects are documented for NCCL?
NCCL documentation discusses Ethernet and InfiniBand as network paths for GPU hosts. NVIDIA’s NCCL troubleshooting material also includes RoCE diagnostics. These are supported transport categories, not a universal approval list for adapter part numbers.
| Interconnect | How it fits distributed training | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet/TCP | NCCL can use Ethernet-connected GPU hosts. It is often the simplest option when an existing data-center Ethernet fabric is available. | Correct data interface selection, IP configuration, driver and firmware versions, switch configuration, MTU and routing, and NCCL socket settings. |
| InfiniBand | NCCL documentation describes InfiniBand support and GPUDirect-related operation for GPU hosts. | Host-channel-adapter driver stack, firmware, subnet manager, link state, GPU-to-NIC affinity, PCIe topology, and NCCL’s InfiniBand device selection. |
| RoCE | RDMA over Converged Ethernet is covered in NVIDIA’s NCCL troubleshooting guidance as a fabric requiring specific diagnostics. | RDMA and vendor-of-transport packages, lossless or correctly engineered switching, priority-flow-control/ECN policy where required, addressing, firmware, and congestion behavior. |
The practical interpretation is categorical: an adapter should be evaluated as part of a complete NCCL installation, not by its advertised line rate alone. No universal adapter-SKU compatibility matrix is established by the cited PyTorch and NVIDIA documentation.

How to verify a network adapter for your cluster
Use this procedure before buying hardware or committing a multi-node job.
- Define the software target. Record the operating system, kernel, CUDA toolkit, NVIDIA driver, NCCL release, and PyTorch release. The exact combination determines which transport libraries and features are available.
- Identify the fabric. Decide whether hosts will communicate over ordinary Ethernet/TCP, InfiniBand, or RoCE. Do not assume that an Ethernet port can be treated as RoCE without the required RDMA software and switch configuration.
- Check the adapter’s host support. Confirm PCIe generation and lane requirements, supported operating systems, kernel modules, firmware utilities, and the vendor’s driver branch. A card that fits mechanically may still lack a usable driver for the target kernel.
- Map GPU-to-NIC affinity. Use the server’s topology information to determine which GPU and network port share a PCIe root complex or the most direct path. NVIDIA troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out GPU-to-NIC topology, IOMMU, and ACS as diagnostic areas.
- Confirm interface selection. NCCL and Gloo attempt to select an interface automatically. If a host has management, storage, and training networks, set
NCCL_SOCKET_IFNAMEto the intended interface. For a Gloo fallback, useGLOO_SOCKET_IFNAME. - Validate the fabric outside the training script. Check link state, addressing, route symmetry, RDMA device visibility where applicable, and switch port errors. For InfiniBand or RoCE, verify that the expected device and transport are visible from every host.
- Run communication tests. Measure latency and bandwidth with NCCL-oriented tests at the intended process and GPU counts. A link-rate specification is not a measured application result; collectives can be limited by topology, protocol overhead, contention, or an incorrectly selected interface.
- Test failure behavior. Stop a port, restart a rank, or introduce a controlled link error in a staging environment. Confirm that your launcher reports the failing rank and that jobs do not silently use a slower management interface.
Topology and configuration issues that commonly decide performance
GPU-to-NIC placement
Two servers can contain the same GPUs and adapters yet produce different results if one places the NIC behind a distant PCIe root complex or across a constrained inter-socket link. Record the bus IDs of GPUs and ports, then place ranks so that traffic uses the shortest practical path. If the platform has multiple PCIe switches, check for oversubscription.
IOMMU and ACS settings
IOMMU and PCIe Access Control Services can alter peer-to-peer paths. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance lists them among items to inspect when expected GPU-direct or network behavior is missing. Treat any BIOS change as a platform-specific decision: document the original setting, apply the vendor’s supported configuration, and retest after firmware updates.

Interface selection
Automatic selection is convenient on a single-network host but risky on a multi-homed server. An incorrect choice can produce timeouts, low bandwidth, or a job that works only when a management route happens to be reachable. Set NCCL_SOCKET_IFNAME explicitly when needed, and keep the setting consistent across hosts.
Fabric health
InfiniBand and RoCE require more than a cable and a link light. Check subnet or fabric management, port counters, congestion, MTU consistency, and switch policy. For RoCE, validate the RDMA transport and the loss-management configuration used by your switches. A healthy TCP ping does not prove that the RDMA path used by NCCL is healthy.
Which storage controllers and devices fit the storage path?
Conventional local NVMe
For ordinary dataset and checkpoint I/O, a local NVMe controller and SSD can be entirely appropriate without GDS. The application reads through the operating-system filesystem and copies data into host memory before the framework stages it for the GPU. Select the device based on sustained throughput, latency under concurrent ranks, endurance, capacity, and power or thermal limits. These criteria are separate from NCCL network compatibility.

GPUDirect Storage (GDS)
GDS can provide a direct GPU-to-storage path for supported workflows, but PyTorch’s documented torch.cuda.gds APIs are marked prototype and were introduced in PyTorch 2.7. The tutorial requires PyTorch 2.7.0 or later, GDS installed according to NVIDIA’s instructions, a filesystem that supports GDS, and 4KB storage alignment.
NVIDIA’s GDS guidance adds device-level restrictions: the NVMe device must be GDS-compatible and must not expose block-device integrity capability. In the relevant block-device section, EXT4 and XFS are listed as supported filesystems; for the described direct-I/O path, EXT4 must be mounted with journaling mode data=ordered. These conditions apply to the specific GDS path, not to every NVMe workload.
NVMe over Fabrics
NVMe over Fabrics can place storage away from the training server, but it introduces another transport and failure domain. NVIDIA’s GDS guide describes NVMe-oF support as requiring storage-transport packages, recommends DOCA for new GDS installations, and discusses MLNX_OFED for applicable existing installations. Verify that the target controller, transport, filesystem, and GDS release are all supported together; an NVMe-oF namespace being mountable does not by itself establish GDS compatibility.

GPU and platform scope for GDS P2PDMA
NVIDIA lists A100, A40, L4, L40S, H100, H200, B100, B200, and B300 in its NVMe PCI P2PDMA compatibility section. This is a specific GDS P2PDMA list. It is not a general list of GPUs that support distributed training, NCCL, or every GDS deployment mode. Confirm the current guide for your exact GPU, driver, kernel, and platform before treating the list as applicable.
A purchase and deployment checklist
- State the job pattern: number of nodes, GPUs per node, expected checkpoint frequency, dataset locality, and whether training is synchronous.
- Choose the network path: Ethernet/TCP, InfiniBand, or RoCE, based on the existing fabric and operational expertise.
- Match adapter and server: PCIe slot width, NUMA placement, cooling, firmware, driver, and operating-system support.
- Match NCCL and PyTorch: verify that the target versions support the intended transport and that launch configuration selects the correct interface.
- Separate storage requirements: decide whether normal filesystem I/O is sufficient or whether GDS is a real requirement.
- For GDS, verify every constraint: PyTorch version, GDS installation, filesystem, 4KB alignment, NVMe compatibility, absence of block-device integrity capability, and GPU/platform support.
- Benchmark the assembled system: test NCCL collectives and storage I/O at realistic rank counts, then repeat under simultaneous dataset reads and checkpoint writes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
NCCL hangs during initialization
First check that every rank can resolve and reach the intended host addresses. Then inspect NCCL_SOCKET_IFNAME, firewall rules, interface state, and whether one host selected a management port. For InfiniBand or RoCE, inspect RDMA device visibility, link state, fabric management, and port counters rather than relying on a successful TCP test.
Training runs but communication is slow
Compare the selected interface with the intended adapter, inspect GPU-to-NIC affinity and PCIe topology, and run a communication benchmark at the same GPU count as the job. Check for oversubscribed PCIe switches, congestion, mismatched MTUs, and a fallback transport. Do not infer a throughput number from the adapter’s advertised line rate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
GDS initialization fails
Verify that the PyTorch version includes the documented API, GDS is installed, the mounted filesystem supports GDS, and I/O is aligned to 4KB. Confirm that the particular NVMe device is compatible and does not expose block-device integrity capability. For EXT4, check the required data=ordered journaling mode for the described direct-I/O path.
Checkpoints work without GDS but fail with it
That symptom usually indicates a GDS-specific prerequisite rather than an NCCL network problem. Revert to standard filesystem I/O to keep the job running while you validate the device, filesystem, alignment, driver and transport packages, and GPU-to-storage topology.
What cannot be answered from a generic adapter list
A model-specific yes-or-no answer requires the GPU model, server and PCIe layout, operating system and kernel, NVIDIA driver and NCCL versions, fabric type, switch configuration, filesystem, storage transport, and candidate part numbers. Official PyTorch and NVIDIA guidance establishes the supported software and transport categories, but it does not certify every commercial adapter or storage controller SKU. Treat compatibility as an end-to-end system check and confirm the exact release documentation before deployment.
