For most close-miking, start with a cardioid microphone: it favors sound in front of the mic and can reduce room sound. Choose a cardioid dynamic in a noisy or untreated room, or a large-diaphragm cardioid condenser in a controlled room when you want more detail. Placement matters as much as mic type—keep distance steady and aim the mic’s less-sensitive direction toward unwanted sound.

How to choose a microphone for near-field recording

Near-field recording means placing the microphone close to the source. The right choice depends on the room, the sound source and the character you want—not on one microphone being universally best.

Recording situation Good starting choice Why it can work
Untreated or noisy room Cardioid dynamic Its directional pattern helps limit room ambience; a dynamic can also be a forgiving choice around spill and loud sources.
Controlled room, detailed vocals Large-diaphragm cardioid condenser A condenser is a strong option when you want detail, but it can also capture room reflections. Use a pop filter for close vocals.
Aggressive vocal or loud instrument Dynamic microphone Dynamics are often well suited to robust close work and high sound pressure. Set recording gain appropriately for your interface.
Different patterns for changing sources or rooms Multi-pattern condenser, such as the Shure KSM44A Switching among omni, cardioid and figure-8 patterns offers flexibility.

These are starting points, not guarantees: room acoustics, the performer and the specific microphone all affect the result. Condenser microphones generally require phantom power; check the chosen model’s manual and your interface’s capabilities.

Which pickup pattern helps reject room noise?

Cardioid is a practical default because it is most sensitive toward the front and less sensitive toward the rear. Orient that rear rejection toward the loudest unwanted sound where possible. It can reduce room ambience, but it cannot remove reflections already reaching the microphone from other directions.

In a project studio, a supercardioid microphone can help reduce monitor spill when its rear null is aimed correctly. The null is the direction of least sensitivity, and its position depends on the microphone’s pattern—check the model’s polar-pattern diagram rather than assuming it is directly behind the mic.

Condenser or dynamic for close recording?

Choose a condenser for detail in a controlled room

A large-diaphragm cardioid condenser is a common starting point for detailed close vocals. Its sensitivity can be an advantage for capturing nuance, but it will also capture reflections and other sound in the room. Room control therefore matters as much as the microphone.

Choose a dynamic for spill, loud sources or aggressive vocals

A dynamic can be a more forgiving choice when recording close to a loud or forceful source, or when spill is a concern. The Shure SM57 is an official example of a cardioid dynamic used for close instrument and vocal recording. The cardioid Shure SM58 is another option for close vocals.

Neither microphone type automatically rejects all room noise. Pattern, orientation, distance and the room itself all contribute to what the mic captures.

How close should you place the microphone?

Shure’s vocal-recording guidance gives approximately 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) as a starting distance for many singers. Treat that as a starting point rather than a fixed rule: the source, room and desired sound may call for a different position.

Shure advises placing an SM57 as close as practical to the wanted source and away from unwanted sources. As a cardioid microphone moves closer to a source, proximity effect increases low frequencies. If the bass changes noticeably as the performer moves, adjust the distance or angle and keep it consistent through the performance.

What to check before recording

  • Room: In a reflective or noisy space, begin with a cardioid dynamic and orient its rejection toward the main unwanted sound.
  • Source: For detailed vocals in a controlled room, try a cardioid condenser; for aggressive vocals or loud instruments, try a dynamic.
  • Placement: Start near the source, listen for proximity-effect bass buildup and maintain a consistent distance.
  • Equipment: Check whether the microphone needs phantom power and whether your interface can provide the gain the setup requires.
  • Result: Choose the pattern, microphone and position that sound right for the particular source and recording.
