For a mid-range phone, battery life matters more if you spend long stretches away from an outlet; charging speed matters more if you can plug in during short breaks and need a quick top-up. The better choice depends on your routine—not on the biggest mAh or wattage number in a spec sheet.

What matters more for your routine?

Prioritize battery life if you need the phone to last

Choose endurance first if your days involve commuting, travel, field work, or heavy use without reliable access to power. Battery life is how long a device can be used before it needs recharging. A larger battery capacity can help preserve acceptable runtime as a battery ages, but mAh alone does not tell you how long a phone will last in practice. The European Commission’s 2023 battery-policy impact assessment calls long battery life “the most important feature in smartphones for prospective buyers” in its discussion of higher battery capacities. That is an assertion in a policy document, not a consumer-survey result establishing what buyers generally prefer. European Commission impact assessment.

Prioritize charging speed if top-ups fit your day

Fast charging is more valuable when you can plug in during predictable breaks—before leaving home, at lunch, or between appointments—and do not need the phone to run continuously for a long stretch. Consider both the time to a useful partial charge and the time to full. A headline wattage is a peak rating, not a promise that the phone will charge at that rate throughout the session.

How to compare battery life and charging fairly

Compare runtime results, not capacity figures alone

Look for battery-runtime tests done with the same method. Check what the test measures, as well as conditions such as screen brightness, network connection, battery health, and software. PhoneArena publishes battery and charging results and says its testing uses fixed 200-nit brightness, Wi-Fi only, and 100% battery health. Those conditions help make its entries comparable within that testing framework, but your activity and network use may produce different results. Compare timed charging results, not peak watts

Charging happens in phases: under appropriate charging power, the earlier portion of a charge can arrive faster than the final portion toward full. A 2024 Locatis, Lda white paper says smartphones acquire “70 to 80%” of total charge faster than the remaining portion to full. This is a general statement, not a guarantee for every handset or charger. If you usually need only enough charge to get through the next few hours, a timed result to a partial level may matter more than a full-charge time. Locatis USB-C Power Delivery white paper.

Account for charging conditions

Charging speed varies with the phone’s state and environment. Google says it depends on usage during charging, battery age, and ambient temperature, and that actual speed may be slower than its test result. For a meaningful comparison, use results taken with an appropriate compatible charger and note the starting battery level and conditions. Google Pixel battery and charging support.

What published phone comparisons show—and what they do not

A June 18, 2025 XpertPick comparison illustrates why endurance and charging speed can have different winners. It reported the vivo V50 lasting over 21 hours in its PCMark battery test and taking under 45 minutes for a full charge, while naming the iQOO Neo 10 its fastest full-charge performer. XpertPick said repeated PCMark attempts on the iQOO and Samsung Galaxy A36 5G returned errors, so those models could not be compared consistently on that test. These are one publisher’s results for selected phones, not a lasting or universal ranking; the cited passage does not establish test version, precise market variants, or current local availability. XpertPick’s comparison.

PhoneArena’s live table offers a separate set of entries, not a controlled head-to-head conclusion: it lists the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G with a 5,000 mAh battery, 45 W wired charging, and a 1 hour 15 minute full-charge result; it lists the Nothing CMF Phone 2 Pro with a 5,000 mAh battery, 33 W wired charging, and a 1 hour 10 minute full-charge result. The different wattage and full-charge times show why peak power alone does not determine the outcome. Verify the current table entry and exact local model before relying on either figure.

A practical way to decide before buying

  1. Map your longest stretch without power. If you regularly need the phone to last through a long day away from outlets, give more weight to same-method runtime tests.
  2. Estimate how often you can top up. If brief charging breaks are realistic, compare measured time to a useful partial charge as well as time to full.
  3. Check your own usage pattern. Heavy screen use, mobile-network activity, and using the phone while charging can make your experience differ from controlled test results.
  4. Verify the exact model and charger pairing. Confirm that the test and charging figures apply to the precise regional variant you can buy and that the charger supports the phone’s charging method.
  5. Choose the trade-off you will feel most often. A longer-lasting phone reduces how often you need to seek power; a quicker-charging phone makes an available outlet more useful.

If you are mainly concerned about reaching an outlet with charge remaining, a USB-C power bank can provide another opportunity to recharge. It does not increase the phone’s built-in capacity, measured runtime, or charging speed.
