The screenshot key depends on your operating system. On Windows, use Print Screen (PrtSc) for the dedicated capture command or Windows + Shift + S to select an area. On a Mac, press Shift + Command + 3 for the whole screen or Shift + Command + 4 for a selection. Chromebooks use a dedicated Screenshot key or Ctrl + Shift + Show windows; GNOME Linux documents Shift + Prnt Scrn for an area.

The key combination tells the operating system what to capture; whether the result is copied to the clipboard, saved automatically, or shown in a capture panel depends on the platform version and settings.
Windows: use Print Screen or Windows + Shift + S
Find the Print Screen key
Microsoft says the PRINT SCREEN key is usually in the upper-right area of the keyboard. Labels include PrtSc, PrtScn, Prnt Scrn, or Print Scr. On a full-size keyboard it is commonly grouped with keys such as Insert, Home, and Page Up. The exact lettering and placement vary by keyboard layout.
Capture the entire screen
- Press Print Screen (PrtSc) once.
- Open the destination where you want the image and paste or save it according to your Windows capture settings.
Windows versions and settings differ in how a Print Screen press is handled, so do not assume a particular folder or clipboard result without checking your current configuration.

Select a rectangle, window, or other region
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose the capture mode shown by the screen-capture interface.
- Drag over the area you need, then use the notification or capture interface to edit, copy, or save it.
This is the most useful fallback when a laptop has no visible PrtSc label. It also avoids capturing unrelated monitors or desktop content.
When a Windows keyboard has no visible PrtSc
- Look for a shortened label such as
PrtScon another key or on a secondary keyboard layer. - Check the keyboard’s printed layout and the manufacturer’s documented alternate-key method.
- Use Windows + Shift + S when you only need part of the display.
- For a permanent, familiar control, connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard that includes a dedicated Print Screen key.
Mac: there is no Print Screen key to find
Capture the entire display
- Press and release Shift + Command + 3 together.
- macOS performs the standard full-screen screenshot action. The exact save and preview behavior can vary with macOS settings.
Apple’s instruction is to press and then release Shift, Command, and 3 together. The Command key is the key marked with the clover-like symbol (⌘) on Apple keyboards.
Capture part of the display
- Press Shift + Command + 4.
- Drag to select the area.
- Release to complete the capture.
Capture a window or menu
- Press Shift + Command + 4.
- Press Space to switch to window or menu capture.
- Select the window or menu you want.
These shortcuts are built into macOS, so adding a Windows-style Print Screen key is unnecessary unless you prefer a different physical workflow.
Chromebook and ChromeOS: use Screenshot or Show windows
Chromebook with a dedicated Screenshot key
Some Chromebook keyboards have a key labeled Screenshot. Press it to open ChromeOS’s capture controls, then choose the full-screen or partial capture mode offered by your version of ChromeOS.

- For the capture tool, press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows.
- For a full-screen screenshot, Google lists Ctrl + Show windows.
The Show windows key is the Chromebook key showing a rectangle with lines beside it. It is normally in the top row, but its position can differ on unusual layouts.

External keyboard without Show windows
Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the external-keyboard substitute when the connected keyboard does not have a Show windows key. This is useful with standard USB or Bluetooth keyboards designed for another operating system.
Linux: the desktop environment determines the shortcut
GNOME
GNOME Help documents Shift + Prnt Scrn for taking a screenshot of an area. Press the keys, select the region, and complete the capture through the desktop’s screenshot interface.
KDE, Xfce, and other desktops
Linux does not have one universal shortcut across every desktop environment. KDE, Xfce, window managers, distributions, and user-created keybindings may assign different actions to Print Screen. If GNOME’s combination does nothing, open your desktop’s keyboard-shortcut settings and search for screenshot, screen capture, or Print Screen. The desktop environment, not the Linux kernel itself, controls these bindings.
What happens after you press the key?
Two keyboards can use the same shortcut while producing different next steps because operating-system versions and preferences control the destination.
- Clipboard result: the image may be placed on the clipboard for pasting into an editor, document, chat, or email.
- Automatic file: the system may save a file without asking you to paste it.
- Capture interface: a toolbar or notification may appear so you can choose a region, annotate, copy, or save.
Because these behaviors vary, first test the shortcut with an easy-to-replace destination such as an image editor. Do not rely on a remembered folder path from another computer.

Why you cannot find a screenshot key
Compact laptop layouts
Thin laptops and small external keyboards often remove the dedicated Print Screen key to save space. The operating system shortcut still works: Windows users can use Windows + Shift + S, Mac users use the Command combinations, and Chromebook users can use the Show windows or F5 fallback.
Different legends and keyboard languages
A key can be labeled with an abbreviation, a translated word, or an icon. Search the top-right area on Windows keyboards and the top row on Chromebooks, but trust the printed legend and the active layout rather than a picture of another model.
Remapping and accessibility software
Keyboard-remapping utilities, accessibility settings, remote-desktop software, and manufacturer hotkey layers can intercept a shortcut. Temporarily test the same combination in a plain local session. If it works there, inspect the remapper or accessibility configuration instead of replacing the keyboard.
Troubleshooting checklist
Nothing happens
- Confirm that you are using the shortcut for the operating system currently running, not the keyboard’s original operating system.
- Try the platform’s selection shortcut: Windows + Shift + S, Shift + Command + 4, Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, or GNOME’s Shift + Prnt Scrn.
- Disconnect a remote-desktop or keyboard-remapping utility and test again.
- Check whether the keyboard layout has reassigned the printed key.
The wrong screen or too much content is captured
Use a selection mode instead of full-screen mode. On macOS, Shift + Command + 4 lets you draw the exact rectangle; on Windows and ChromeOS, open the capture tool and choose its area mode.
You captured a blank or unexpected result
Verify that the capture completed before switching windows. If the image is on the clipboard, paste it into an image editor immediately. If your desktop uses a capture panel, use its save command rather than assuming a file was written.

You need a physical key
