1280 × 960 is the proper 4:3 resolution when pixels are square. Its width-to-height ratio is exactly 4:3. A 1280 × 1040 raster has a 16:13 ratio, so it is not a standard square-pixel 4:3 computer mode. If you saw 1280 × 1040 in a conventional PC context, it may be a typo for 1280 × 1024—but 1280 × 1024 is 5:4, not 4:3.
The calculation settles the 4:3 question
Aspect ratio is the relationship between an image’s width and height. For square-pixel dimensions, calculate width ÷ height:
- 1280 ÷ 960 = 1.3333…, which equals 4 ÷ 3.
- 1280 ÷ 1040 = 1.2308…, which does not equal 4 ÷ 3.
For a 1280-pixel-wide 4:3 image, the required height is:
1280 × 3 ÷ 4 = 960
VESA timing material identifies 1280 × 960 as a 4:3 format and as the 4:3 alternative to 1280 × 1024 (VESA CVT documentation). A VESA timing reference also lists a non-interlaced 1280 × 960 mode at 60 Hz (VESA monitor timings specification).

How the three commonly confused modes compare

Ricoh’s compatible-signal table classifies 1280 × 960 as 4:3 and 1280 × 1024 as 5:4 (Ricoh compatible signals). The Society for Information Display’s ICDM listings likewise distinguish the two formats (ICDM standards).
Why 1280 × 1040 appears in some specifications
It may be a typo for 1280 × 1024
The historically familiar 1280-wide PC modes are 1280 × 960 and 1280 × 1024. A source that says 1280 × 1040 may have transposed or mistyped the latter. Do not, however, “correct” it to 1280 × 1024 and then call that mode 4:3; 1280 × 1024 is formally 5:4.

It may describe specialized hardware
Some teleprompter and other specialized equipment listings use 1280 × 1040 while also describing the associated display as 4:3. Examples include Autocue listings (Pioneer 19-inch studio box and Navigator conference package) and an Ikan system (Ikan interview system). Those listings show that the number exists in product specifications; they do not establish it as a standard square-pixel 4:3 computer resolution.
The panel shape and pixel grid may not match
“4:3 display” can refer to the physical screen or to the image shown, while a resolution describes the pixel grid. With square pixels, those ratios normally match. Non-square pixels, internal scaling, cropping, or a vendor-specific signal can make them differ. To turn a 1280 × 1040 raster into a 4:3 displayed image, the horizontal pixel aspect ratio would need to be 13:12—an unusual condition for an ordinary PC monitor.

Which resolution should you choose?

If you are simply choosing between 1280 × 960 and 1280 × 1040 for a normal PC, gaming setup, or emulator, select 1280 × 960.
Preventing distortion after selecting the mode
A correct raster can still look wrong if the GPU or monitor scales it incorrectly. Check these settings:

- Maintain aspect ratio: preserves a 4:3 source on a widescreen panel, usually adding vertical pillarbox bars.
- Full-screen stretch: fills the panel but changes the image geometry.
- Centered or no scaling: shows the source at its native size, potentially with borders.
- Integer scaling: enlarges pixel-art sources by whole-number factors when supported.
For a 1280 × 1024 source, preserve 5:4 geometry rather than forcing it into 4:3. Also verify that the monitor, projector, cable path, GPU, and application accept the selected timing. 1280 × 960 is recognized, but support is not universal; the cited Ricoh table, for example, lists specific refresh-rate compatibility and warns that unspecified signals may not display correctly (Ricoh compatible signals).
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Check whether the original source intended 1280 × 960, 1280 × 1024, or the uncommon 1280 × 1040.
- Read the monitor or device’s EDID, manual, or supported-timing table.
- Confirm whether the stated “4:3” label refers to the physical panel, the input signal, or the displayed image.
- Set the GPU and monitor to maintain the source’s aspect ratio instead of using unrestricted stretch.
- Check the resulting image with a square test pattern or a known-circular object; circles should remain circular.
Bottom line
Use 1280 × 960 for a mathematically correct 4:3 computer image. Treat 1280 × 1024 as the common 5:4 SXGA alternative, and use 1280 × 1040 only when a specific device documents that custom mode and its scaling behavior.
