If your iPhone still shows SOS or SOS only after basic troubleshooting, choose Reset Network Settings—not Delete All eSIMs or Erase All Content and Settings. Find it at Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Apple advises using this reset only after other solutions fail. It removes saved network details, so you’ll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and may need to restore other network settings.

What SOS or SOS only means

SOS in the status bar means your iPhone is not connected to your cellular provider’s network. Emergency calls may still be possible through another carrier’s network where one is available, but SOS does not mean that the Emergency SOS feature is active. The availability of another network depends on your location. Apple’s guidance for No Service, Searching, or SOS and its status-icon guide explain the distinction. Supported iPhones may also offer satellite emergency features in selected regions when cellular service is unavailable; see Apple’s satellite connection information.

Try these lower-impact checks first

Work through the checks before resetting saved network settings. They can help distinguish a temporary connection problem from a disabled line, SIM issue, or carrier-side problem. Apple recommends these steps for SOS or No Service symptoms. Apple Support: If you see SOS, No Service, or Searching

  1. Refresh the connection: If a cellular network is available, open Control Center, turn on Airplane Mode, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
  2. Restart the iPhone: Restart it and check whether the status changes after it reconnects.
  3. Ask your carrier to check service: Have the carrier verify your account standing, local coverage or an outage, any device block, and whether your plan is set up correctly. Only the carrier can access and manage your account details.
  4. Check software and carrier settings: Update iOS. While connected to Wi-Fi, go to Settings > General > About and follow any prompt to install a carrier settings update.
  5. Check the active line and SIM: If you use Dual SIM, go to Settings > Cellular and make sure the intended line is enabled. If a physical SIM is missing from settings or appears damaged, contact your carrier; where appropriate, remove and reinsert it.

Reset Network Settings if SOS remains

After the checks above, use the specific network reset: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. The exact wording or availability can vary with iOS version, device, region, carrier, and SIM setup. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions say, “Reset network settings only if other solutions fail.” Apple Support: If your iPhone or iPad won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network

What the reset changes

Apple says this reset clears saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings. It also removes previously used networks and VPN settings that were not installed through a configuration profile or mobile device management. Wi-Fi turns off and back on, disconnecting the iPhone from its current network; cellular data roaming may be turned off. Manually trusted certificates may become untrusted, and the device name may revert to “iPhone.” See Apple’s iPhone guide to resetting settings.

  • Make sure you can reconnect to your Wi-Fi network; you’ll need its password.
  • If you use a VPN or custom APN or cellular configuration, be prepared to restore the relevant details.
  • After the reset, check cellular data roaming if you rely on it.

If SOS is still there afterward

A network reset cannot resolve every cause. If SOS persists, contact your carrier to confirm that your account, plan, device, and local network are working as expected. If the carrier rules out service or account problems and the iPhone may have a hardware fault, Apple says service may be needed. The carrier can assess its network and account; Apple or an authorized service provider can assess the device.
