Apple lists Camera Control on iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max. It is not listed for iPhone 16e or iPhone 17e. The feature can make camera access and selected adjustments more convenient, but whether it justifies an upgrade depends on how often you use it and the full cost of changing phones.
Which iPhones have Camera Control?
Apple’s supported-model list names these iPhones:
- iPhone 16
- iPhone 16 Plus
- iPhone 16 Pro
- iPhone 16 Pro Max
- iPhone 17
- iPhone 17 Pro
- iPhone 17 Pro Max
- iPhone Air
- iPhone 18 Pro
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
The list does not include iPhone 16e or iPhone 17e. So “iPhone 16 and later” is not a safe shorthand if you mean every model released afterward: check the specific model, especially the e-series. See Apple’s Camera Control model list and its overview of iPhone controls.
What can Camera Control do?
Camera Control is a physical button and touch-sensitive surface for launching the camera, capturing photos or video, and adjusting selected settings. Apple’s Camera Control guide describes the basic operation:

- Click once to open Camera.
- Click again to take a photo. Click and hold to record video.
- Lightly double-press to open the settings overlay. Slide along the control to select a setting, then slide again to adjust it.
The selected setting is saved for the next time you lightly press Camera Control. Available options can vary by camera mode.
Settings and adjustments
Apple lists exposure, depth, zoom, camera selection—including the front-facing camera—Photographic Styles, and tone. You can also enable focus and exposure locking, then lightly press and hold the control until AE/AF Lock appears.

Make the control fit your habits
You can set Camera Control to open Camera, Code Scanner, Magnifier, or a favorite third-party camera app—or configure it to open nothing. Accessibility options let you change how much pressure a light press requires and the speed needed for a light double-press. These choices can make the button more useful if you want a different shortcut or find its default press behavior uncomfortable.
Camera Control and Visual Intelligence are not the same thing
On supported Camera Control models, clicking and holding the control can activate Visual Intelligence. Apple describes the feature as a way to use the camera to identify or search for things, look up business details, translate or summarize text, identify plants and animals, and interact with text.

Camera Control is not the only way to reach Visual Intelligence. Apple also documents Action button, Lock Screen, and Control Center activation for iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Those alternatives do not add the physical Camera Control button to those phones. Apple notes that Apple Intelligence features can depend on language and region, and that usage limits may apply. It may be a worthwhile convenience if you take photos often, want to launch the camera quickly, or expect to use the tactile control to change settings. It can also provide a direct way to activate Visual Intelligence on supported models. Those are reasons to value the feature, not evidence that it is worth a particular amount of money.

The case is weaker if you rarely use the camera, are comfortable using on-screen controls, or already have shortcuts that work for you. Camera Control changes how you reach camera functions; it does not, by itself, establish that a new iPhone is a better overall purchase for your needs.
Compare the whole upgrade, not just the button
Before buying, compare your current phone with the specific model you are considering across four points:

- Camera Control: Confirm that the exact model has it; the e-series exceptions matter.
- Camera features you will use: Check relevant camera modes and controls, not just the presence of the button. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications, for example, list exposure, depth, zoom, cameras, styles, and tone for that model.
- Other changes you value: Consider the rest of the phone’s differences that matter to you, rather than treating Camera Control as the entire upgrade.
- Total cost: Work out the purchase price after any trade-in and compare it with the value you expect to get from the complete upgrade.
Apple’s feature documentation explains what Camera Control does, but does not determine the right upgrade price or establish which model is best value. Your camera habits, existing phone, and actual purchase cost decide that.
