There is no required or irreversible first pick in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. Choose the hero whose story or combat style interests you most; if you want the smoothest introduction, start with Cai. Dietrich suits players drawn to Fódlan and combat challenges, Theodora to politics and battalions, and Leda to support play and a personal revenge story. You can switch paths after reaching Dagsion, and the game preserves your progress.
That flexibility makes this a preference question, not a hidden route-ranking puzzle. Your first path does take longer to learn, and finishing it before switching carries useful map and quest progress forward, so there are practical reasons to choose carefully even though you cannot ruin a save with the wrong obelisk.

Nintendo producer Genki Yokota said players can “feel free to choose whichever protagonist they’d like to start with.” The game uses one save for the paths rather than treating the first choice as a permanent branch. As you progress, you may encounter the other protagonists in the shared story, then switch if one of them makes you want to see their perspective.
That does not mean the four openings play alike. Each hero has a distinct story, party shape, and overworld activity. The opening pick changes what you learn and do first, but not whether you can later see the other routes.
Guide recommendations vary because they answer different questions. Many guides call Cai the easiest on-ramp; some recommend Theodora, Dietrich, or Leda for particular interests. Nintendo Life instead argues for starting with Dietrich partly because of the strength of his combat kit, while an IGN guide editor said they began with Leda for her supporting cast, utility, and recruitment. Those are individual guide preferences, not an official or universal best order.
Which lord should I pick first?
Use your preferred story and play style as the deciding factor. If none stands out and you want the gentlest introduction to the game’s systems, choose Cai.
- Pick Cai if you are new to tactical RPGs, want a balanced party, or prefer a straightforward village-hero story.
- Pick Dietrich if you came from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, want Fódlan connections, or like seeking out battles and upgrading combat skills.
- Pick Theodora if court politics, battalion tactics, ships, and a larger starting force sound appealing.
- Pick Leda if you want a personal revenge plot, support-focused play, songs, and a capable starting mix of magic and armor units.
If you are aiming to complete every path, consider finishing your first Part I before opening the next. Map discoveries and some generic quest progress then carry forward, making later paths less repetitive. You can still switch mid-route; you simply do not get all the benefits of a completed path until you finish it.
What makes each Flame Lord’s path different?
Each path has a distinct story texture and a special overworld loop. The differences matter more than a small difference in opening difficulty: they determine which activities, recruits, and battle opportunities you encounter early.
Cai: the clearest introduction
Nintendo describes Cai as “a young boy determined to save his father from imprisonment.” His story is a village underdog’s journey into the wider conflict, so he learns the world alongside a player who may be new to it. He is commonly recommended as the default first path because his map is more restricted than the others and his early party covers several roles.
Cai fights as a mounted spear user, and his Blaze Art, Underworld Blast, is a ranged dark-flame attack that can hit multiple enemies. His personal ability, Brio, adds one point of movement. His starting group includes Cai, support mage Tialla, archer Peter, and attack mage Ultand, who joins later according to one guide; Guzran joins during the tutorial.

His distinctive activities include farming crop plots, luring and capturing horses and ornius, tending mounts at the Lowtown stable to develop Mount Abilities, and completing Kindness Quests. Those quests can help with Renown and recruitment. His path also introduces a danger-sensing dungeon feature. Cai’s Mentorship system can unlock classes for the wider save, which gives completing his route value beyond the immediate story.
Guide accounts differ on which hero earns Renown fastest: GameSpot credits Cai’s special quests with a modest advantage, while IGN points to the quantity of Leda’s talent-related subquests. Treat Renown speed as a route-specific guide observation rather than a definitive reason to pick one lord.
Dietrich: Fódlan, relic combat, and more battles
Nintendo calls Dietrich “a ruthless swordman ever on the hunt for a stronger foe” (the spelling is Nintendo’s). He comes from Fódlan and wields the Hero’s Relic Answerer. His route is the natural pick for Three Houses players who want those connections, or for anyone who wants the map to offer more opportunities to fight.

Dietrich’s Answerer’s Cry reveals or summons enemies on the world map, while Dread Warrior challenges let him learn Combat Arts. Magic Echo Shards at Smyrnos Temple can strengthen those arts, and arts can also be taught to allies. His signature Blaze Art, Ink-Black Wen, teleports him up to three spaces through obstacles; he cannot move afterward. He is the only hero who begins with a legendary weapon, and guides describe his critical-hit-focused kit as potent but more specialized.
His early party—Fabio, Esmeralda, and Mikaela, with Yang Jie joining in the tutorial—is melee-heavy and comparatively light on magic and ranged support. That makes his opening a less forgiving onboarding choice for some players, even though experienced players may enjoy the combat emphasis. He begins with access to the full map, unlike Cai’s more limited opening map.
Dietrich has the most paralogues, with eight of the game’s nine counted across the four paths. That is not every paralogue: the claim that his route sees all of them is contradicted by the counts in multiple guides. Some characters and events are still tied to other lords.
Theodora: homeland politics and battalions
Nintendo describes Theodora as “a queen seeking to fulfill the long-held dream of her homeland.” Her story is the most overtly political of the four, with more names, factions, and past conflicts to keep track of. Choose her early if that density sounds compelling rather than intimidating.
Her route uniquely uses Battalions and Gambits, lets you recruit soldiers in settlements, and opens sea travel. She can send battalions to search for additional map items. Her Blaze Art, Earthen Throw, launches a long-range boulder in a straight line. Her party is large and covers the basic combat roles, but its cast leans toward slower, sturdier units. She starts with Mahadu’s Spear and has a personal ability with a chance to halve damage when attacked.

Theodora is also prominent in the larger story. She is always in the Part II party, and her route has seven paralogues. Some characters and an Advanced class are route-gated, so her path is valuable if you care about a broad roster or class access as well as the political plot.
Spoiler-light note: Some guides describe major details about Theodora’s past and the cost of her prosthetic arm. Those details go beyond Nintendo’s brief queen-and-homeland synopsis; if you want to preserve character revelations, avoid reading extended route summaries before playing.
Leda: revenge, performances, and support
Nintendo describes Leda as “a talented musician with her sights set on taking her revenge.” Her story is personal and focused, set alongside the capital’s political conflicts rather than rooted in a queen’s rule. Pick her if you are more interested in that individual motive than in the broadest political setup.
Leda is a dancer and archer whose support-oriented Blaze Arts—Obsidian Songs—can buff nearby allies. Performances unlock additional songs, and her unique town performances can reveal secret locations that other paths do not find in the same way. She can also make drinks that buff a unit for an entire battle. Her opening roster gives you a mix of roles: Buccar provides armor, Sirocco attack magic, Olympia support magic, Mu an all-rounder, and Catania joins during the tutorial.
Her personal ability, Blindside, has a small chance to prevent a counterattack when she attacks first. Leda cannot field battalions, but her route has a relatively light overworld upkeep. She has four paralogues. Her performance and class progression can unlock Dancer, a class that guides also value for later support options.
How do I switch to another lord without losing progress?
You can switch after reaching Dagsion, not immediately after choosing your first obelisk. Guides place that arrival within the first few chapters, with estimates varying from the opening stretch to around Chapter 3 or 4.
- Continue the first route until Dagsion. The route-switching point is not available at the start of the game.
- Find a Pale Raven’s Perch. Look for the bird marker; guides also describe the perch by its blue drapes. One documented location is in Arena Plaza in Midtown, east of the Bulletin Board.
- Interact and choose Obelisk Chamber. Your current-route progress is saved when you leave.
- Select the next hero’s obelisk. The Fox is Cai, the Lion Dietrich, the Wolf Theodora, and the Eagle Leda. Some guides also report that you can use L and R to cycle between heroes after selecting an obelisk.
You can return to a path and replay a chapter already cleared there. The switching system lets you sample different storylines, but hopping away partway through a path does not count as finishing that path for the map and generic-quest carryover described below.
What carries over when I change paths?
The save combines some progress across routes but keeps each army’s levels and equipment separate. The most useful distinction is between progress that is global immediately and progress that is shared only after completing a Part I path.

| Progress | How it works |
|---|---|
| Support levels, shrine Bless levels, Notable Deeds, unlocked or certified classes, and purchased Boons of Salvation | These are global across the save; supports only increase. |
| World-map exploration and generic subquests | These carry to later paths after you finish a Part I route. Some generic quests auto-complete on later paths, with rewards granted up front. |
| Unit levels and items | These stay with that route’s army and follow it into its later arcs; they do not transfer freely to a different Part I army. |
Guides checked against version 1.0.1 also report that certain series weapons are granted again on each route rather than moved between armies. Buying Boons of Salvation early can be useful because their experience boosts apply across paths. Shared class unlocks likewise make a completed route productive for later armies.
Nintendo’s developers describe the save design as a way to ensure that nothing players do is wasted. If you develop the same character differently on separate paths, the builds can merge later: the character can retain strengths from both versions. Guides place the spending of Karma Shards at the Shrine of Causality in Part III. That later merge is separate from ordinary Part I unit levels and items, which do not simply transfer when you switch.
There is one detail worth not assuming: documentation does not settle whether mounts captured on Cai’s route can be ridden on other paths, or whether battalions remain exclusive to Theodora and her allies. The game’s special systems are clearly route-specific at first, but avoid planning around an unverified cross-path exception.

If you want a smoother second route, yes: completing a lord’s Part I before starting another can carry world-map discoveries and generic quest progress forward. If curiosity is more important, switch as soon as you reach Dagsion; you will keep your route progress, but the finished-path benefits wait.
Each Part I path has 12 chapters according to the count reported by a specialist guide. The first route usually takes the longest because it teaches the map, systems, and travel options. One guide estimates 20–35 hours for a first path depending on how much of the map you clear; another estimates roughly 45–50 hours to reach the credits on one path. Those numbers may reflect different completion definitions and sources, not a single reliable average. A full view of all four lords’ stories can take well over 100 hours.
Part II is a six-chapter war arc without Free Time or a world map; after completing one lord’s War section, you can skip the others and still get roughly the same experience for those units. Part III brings the Flame Lords together for the assault on Balor and restores Free Time and the world map. You do not have to finish all four Part I paths to reach Part III, but completing more routes contributes characters and their unique systems to the combined finale.
That makes the decision practical as well as narrative: finish a route if you want its map and quest carryover, or move on if another hero’s story has your attention. There is no need to grind through every path before the game lets you continue.

Which route should I choose for recruitment or completion?
For a fuller roster and route-specific content, plan around multiple paths rather than expecting one lord to recruit everyone. Recruitment uses Support and Renown, requirements can vary by lord, and a character recruited in one path is not automatically signed to another army—you may need to find and recruit that character again.

Dietrich has the most paralogues at eight; Theodora has seven; Cai and Leda have four apiece. Some characters refuse particular lords, and some recruitments or events are tied to calendar dates. Guides cite Gaitz as available only on Dietrich through Bertrand’s paralogue on 9/17, and Diego on Theodora between 10/18 and 10/24. If you are tracking a full roster, pay attention to the in-game calendar and route-specific paralogues instead of assuming every character remains available indefinitely.
There is no single cheapest route for recruiting everyone. One guide’s planning rule is to assign a shared recruit to the lord with the lower Support and Renown requirement, then use support conversations as a tiebreaker. Since some class and recruitment details vary by lord, consider a route guide only if you are pursuing a completion goal; you do not need to optimize recruitment to enjoy the main story.
Reported total character counts also differ: one database lists 63 playable characters and a specialist guide lists 65. Because the sources count differently, neither number should be treated here as a definitive official roster total.

Choose Cai for the on-ramp, then finish his Part I if you want the map carryover. Choose someone else without hesitation if their premise or combat loop is the reason you want to play.
A simple preference order can help:
- Story first: village underdog (Cai), Fódlan outsider and relic swordsman (Dietrich), queen and homeland (Theodora), or revenge musician (Leda).
- Combat first: mounted area attacks (Cai), teleporting critical-focused swordplay (Dietrich), armored ranged attacks and battalion tactics (Theodora), or songs and support (Leda).
- Systems first: farming and mounts (Cai), extra enemy hunts and Combat Arts (Dietrich), battalions and sea routes (Theodora), or performances and hidden spots (Leda).
Be wary of treating advice like “save Theodora for last” or “start with Dietrich for the strongest army” as a rule. Those suggestions prioritize narrative buildup or endgame composition, respectively. The game itself allows any order, and the ideal first route is the one that makes you want to keep playing.
How we picked the recommendations
This guide uses Nintendo’s stated route flexibility and developer descriptions of the four paths as the baseline. The newcomer recommendation reflects guide consensus around Cai’s more approachable map and balanced starting party; the other picks are matched to their documented story themes, combat roles, and unique systems. Where guides disagree—such as Renown pace, route order, and playtime—the differences are identified rather than presented as settled facts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave have multiple save slots for the four lords?
The developers describe the paths as consolidated into a single save so progress is preserved rather than discarded. This is different from a conventional choice that creates four independent route saves; use the in-game switching system to continue another protagonist.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I play Fortune’s Weave offline?
Nintendo lists the game as single-player and supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play on Switch 2. The store listing also notes Save Data Cloud through Nintendo Switch Online, which is a cloud-backup feature rather than a stated requirement for playing the single-player campaign.
Do I need the Expansion Pass to play all four lords?
No: Nintendo’s base-game description presents the four protagonists’ individual storylines as part of the game. Nintendo separately lists an Expansion Pass, but the available data does not specify its wave contents, so it is not necessary to infer anything about route access from that add-on.
How much storage space does Fortune’s Weave need on Switch 2?
Nintendo lists a game file size of 27.5 GB. Leave additional free space if you expect to download updates or add-on content, though the listed figure itself is the game file size.
