There is no universal setting that guarantees achievement or trophy eligibility. Each game decides whether difficulty levels, accessibility assists, cheats, mods, and alternate modes count. Ordinary difficulty selection and many presentation or control assists are often allowed, while cheats, Creative or sandbox modes, invulnerability, and dedicated challenge modes frequently disable progress. Read the warning shown by the game and check the current support documentation for your exact title, platform, edition, and mode before committing a save.
How achievement and trophy eligibility is actually decided
Achievements and trophies are controlled by the game’s implementation, not by a single console-wide rule. Two games can use the same label—such as Custom, Assist, or Creative—and apply completely different restrictions. A patch, remaster, platform port, or special edition can also change how a setting is treated.
Use three questions whenever you evaluate a setting:

- What does the option change? A display, subtitle, audio, vibration, text-to-speech, remapping, or navigation option usually changes presentation or input. A damage multiplier, invulnerability toggle, unlimited resources, or enemy-removal option changes the core challenge.
- Can it be changed without invalidating the current save? Some games let you alter settings at any time; others mark a save as ineligible as soon as a restricted option is enabled.
- Does the game explicitly identify the mode as ineligible? An on-screen warning, disabled-achievement icon, or support article has priority over assumptions based on another game.
If the game does not document an exception, treat a clear warning as decisive. Do not assume that a setting is safe merely because it is called an accessibility feature or because another title permits it.

When ordinary difficulty settings are safe
Lower difficulty is not automatically a disqualifier
Many games allow achievements or trophies on their standard difficulty ladder, including the easiest setting. That is a decision made by the individual developer. A lower setting can change enemy damage, detection, resource availability, or other challenge values without changing the objectives that trigger an achievement. Other games restrict particular difficulties, require a specified level, or disable rewards when a custom value is used.
Read the difficulty screen before starting. Look for language such as trophies are not limited by difficulty, a list of eligible modes, or a warning that changing settings will disable rewards. If the screen is silent, consult the current support page for the same platform and edition rather than relying on a guide written for a different release.
Official example: The Last of Us Part I
PlayStation’s documentation for The Last of Us Part I (2022) lists six launch challenge levels: Very Light, Light, Moderate, Hard, Survivor, and Grounded. It also provides granular custom adjustments. The documentation states, “Trophies are not limited by difficulty.” In that game, choosing a lower listed level does not by itself block trophies, and the statement covers the documented difficulty system rather than every unrelated mode a later update might add.

Official example: The Last of Us Part II
PlayStation’s documentation for The Last of Us Part II (2020) lists Very Light, Light, Moderate, Hard, Survivor, and Custom. It likewise says, “Trophies are not limited by difficulty.” The wording is useful because it answers the common question about easy mode directly, but it should not be copied as a rule for another game. A title with a similarly named Custom option may implement it differently.
How accessibility options interact with trophies
Presentation and input assists
Options for subtitles, subtitle size, color, contrast, display filters, audio cues, vibration, text-to-speech, button remapping, and navigation can improve access without altering the game’s underlying objectives. They are often compatible with achievements and trophies when the title does not display a restriction. The safe conclusion is conditional: enable them when the game leaves the save eligible, and stop if the menu presents an explicit warning.
Assists that alter combat or resources
Some accessibility menus go beyond presentation. They may adjust enemy accuracy, stealth detection, incoming damage, aiming, healing, crafting, ammunition, or other resource rules. Because these values affect the core challenge, their eligibility must be verified separately from ordinary display or control options.

The Last of Us Part II documents custom combat, stealth, resource, and other accessibility adjustments while stating that trophies are not limited by difficulty. That is an explicit example of a game allowing extensive assists, but it does not establish a universal category called “accessibility safe.” Check the exact title’s wording, especially after an update or when using a port with a different feature set.
Why the label is not enough
An option named Assist Mode, Custom, or Story can be either a permitted accessibility layer or a separate ruleset. Compare what the setting changes with the game’s warning. If it changes only how information is presented or how controls are mapped, the risk is generally lower. If it grants immunity, unlimited resources, automatic combat success, or a radically different progression model, require explicit confirmation before using it on an achievement run.
Cheats, Creative mode, mods, and other high-risk choices
Minecraft’s documented Survival rule
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108, updated in 2026, gives a precise example for Minecraft: “Achievements are only available in worlds set to survival mode with cheats off.” The Survival example lists four difficulty presets—Peaceful, Easy, Medium, and Hard. Creative is treated as a different gameplay mode, and achievements are disabled for that world. This means that changing from one listed Survival difficulty to another is not the same as switching to Creative.

The warning is also a reminder that eligibility can be attached to a world or save rather than to the whole account. A Creative world can remain useful for building while being ineligible, while a separate Survival world with cheats disabled can continue to track achievements.
Cheat codes, consoles, and shortcut menus
Xbox certification guidance identifies cheat codes, developer consoles, and menu options that reduce achievement difficulty as implementation-sensitive. A game may disable rewards immediately, mark only the current save, or handle the feature in another documented way. Do not test an unknown code on your main completion file. Create a separate test save only when the developer explains how eligibility is isolated and restored; otherwise assume the affected save cannot earn the rewards.

Mods can change game files or inject behavior that the achievement system does not recognize. Invulnerability, one-hit kills, unlimited ammunition, automatic resource generation, and similar multipliers directly remove challenge and are therefore high-risk. Even when a mod appears cosmetic, the game may disable rewards whenever any mod is active. Look for an in-game status indicator and edition-specific documentation before loading a modded save.

Speedrun and challenge modes
A dedicated speedrun, permadeath, challenge, or arcade mode may use its own rules and reward track. It can permit some assists while blocking others, or it may award separate achievements only within that mode. Treat the mode as a separate implementation: read its description, inspect the warning shown when starting it, and confirm that the achievement or trophy list applies to that mode.
A safe decision process before you start
- Identify the exact release. Note the game title, platform, edition, remaster or port, and current patch. A rule for a 2022 release may not describe a later edition.
- Read the mode description. Open the difficulty or game-mode screen and look for eligibility text before creating the save.
- Separate low-impact assists from challenge changes. Enable display, subtitle, audio, control, and navigation options first. Review combat, stealth, resource, damage, and enemy-behavior sliders separately.
- Check for a warning icon or message. If the menu says achievements or trophies are disabled, assume the save is ineligible unless the developer documents a supported way to restore it.
- Leave cheats and alternate modes off. Do not activate console commands, Creative or sandbox modes, invulnerability, resource multipliers, or mods on the save intended for completion.
- Confirm the statement in current documentation. Use the developer or platform support page for your edition, and match its wording to the setting you plan to use.
- Record the decision. If you are following a long completion plan, note the permitted difficulty and assists so a later change does not accidentally invalidate the run.
What to do when a warning appears after progress has started
Stop changing settings as soon as you see an “achievements disabled” message, a crossed-out trophy icon, or equivalent notice. Do not overwrite the only copy of the save. Record which option was enabled, when it was enabled, and whether the warning refers to the current world, profile, or mode.
Next, check the title’s current support documentation for that exact platform and edition. Some games document a reversible setting; others do not. In the absence of a documented recovery method, treat the affected save as ineligible and start a new eligible save rather than assuming that turning the option off will restore tracking.

Questions to ask when comparing editions and platforms

Practical answers to the most common scenarios
- “Will easy mode disable trophies?” Not necessarily. The Last of Us Part I and Part II explicitly state that trophies are not limited by difficulty, while another game may impose a restriction. Verify the title’s own wording.
- “Can I use accessibility options and still earn achievements?” Often, yes for presentation and input options, and sometimes for deeper combat or resource adjustments. Eligibility depends on the game’s implementation; the documented Part II example allows its custom adjustments.
- “Do cheats or assist mode turn off achievements?” Cheats commonly do, and an assist mode may or may not. Treat any warning as authoritative and do not infer safety from the label.
- “Which settings are safest?” Settings that change presentation, audio, subtitles, vibration, text-to-speech, controls, or navigation are generally the least risky when no warning appears. Ordinary difficulty is safe only when the game says it is.
The reliable method is title-specific verification: read the mode warning, compare it with current developer documentation, and keep restricted experiments away from the save intended to earn achievements or trophies.
