No current company leader is established by the available official OpenStack release figures. OpenStack’s 2026.1 Gazpacho update reports contributions from about 500 people across 100 organizations, but neither that announcement nor its list of collaborators ranks companies by contribution.

What the latest OpenStack figures show

The OpenStack 2026.1 Gazpacho release was announced on April 1, 2026. Its release update says that, over the preceding six months, about 500 contributors from 100 organizations delivered more than 9,000 code changes across OpenStack services. The update also reports that 40% of contributions came from European contributors.

The official release page names Ericsson, Rackspace, Red Hat, Walmart, BBC R&D, Samsung SDS, SAP, and NVIDIA among the organizations that collaborated. Those names identify participants; the page gives no company-level totals or ordering. It cannot be used to say which organization contributed most.

Why “most” depends on the measurement

A company can lead one contribution measure and trail another. Commits count recorded changes, while lines of code measure the size of changes; neither alone captures code reviews or the broader activities included in some contribution dashboards. Results also depend on the time window, the repositories or projects included, and how contributors are attributed when they change employers or contribute in more than one capacity.

LFX Insights describes its organizations leaderboard as ranking organizations by contribution activities performed on their behalf during a selected period. However, the OpenStack leaderboard view available for this comparison displayed “Loading data…” instead of company rankings. OpenInfra’s 2023 announcement described a Bitergia contributor dashboard with views of contribution trends and repository distribution, but did not identify a leading company.

What older company rankings actually measured

Historical figures show why an unqualified answer can mislead. An InfoWorld comparison published in 2013 found different leaders for different measures over the six-month period it examined:

Measure Historical leader and reported result Scope and date
Lines of code added DreamHost: 238,596 lines, 16% of the total Six-month comparison reported by InfoWorld in 2013
Commits Red Hat: 1,695 commits, 21% of the total Six-month comparison reported by InfoWorld in 2013
Lifetime lines of code Rackspace: 2,598,806 lines, 33% of the total Lifetime tally reported by InfoWorld in 2013

These are historical results, not current rankings. A June 2013 OpenStack Foundation post about Stackalytics likewise described ways to view activity by company, project, contributor, commits, and lines of code; its example identified Mirantis as fourth by code contribution in the dashboard at that time. The post noted that a developer can add many lines in a small number of commits, while another can make many commits with fewer lines.

How to make a current ranking meaningful

A defensible answer should identify all four of these choices alongside the result:

  • Metric: commits, lines changed, reviews, or a defined set of broader contribution activities.
  • Time period: a release cycle, six months, a year, or lifetime.
  • Project scope: the OpenStack services or repositories counted.
  • Attribution: how work is assigned to organizations, including changes in employment and contributions made in different capacities.

Without those filters and a populated company ranking, a current winner cannot be verified. Dashboard rankings can change with the selected period and filters; an empty or loading table is not evidence that any particular company leads.
